I remember watching this when it aired...until then Steve Martin was just some funny guy my uncles' imitated...but this...made me a fan. Thanks for posting!
@gussielulu I think the unfortunate reasoning behind the close ups on some modern dance shows, especially dancing with the stars, is to hide the horrendous dancing.
I second that emotion! Mr Martin is certainly a man of MANY talents...he more than holds his own with the much more experienced Mr Hines. Oh those dancing fools! Wonderful stuff! Can't help but get "Happy Feet" when I watch these two GIANTS of show biz! CHEERS, mate! :-)
Just fantastic, Steve Martin is a modern day Danny Kaye...he's not just a great tapper but also has a real good voice. I wonder how he keeps in such good shape!
THIS IS AWESOME!! People didn't realize just how talented Steve was. May he RIP with his folk band. No but really this was GREAT I Love what ever Steve does. And he Was AMAZINGLY smooth in this. I wonder if Gregory Hines, God rest his soul for real, choreographed this number. Was this SNL?
The director made it possible for us to enjoy these moments of genius by NOT MOVING in for closeups during the dance. Both Gene and Mr. Astaire insisted on having both dancers in full frame. The idiots at Dancing With the Stars think they can improve on the Astaire/Kelly school and ruin every dance by cutting to closeups at least 5-8 times in a 90 second dance. Guess what Idiots: we KNOW what they look like! We've seen them all for months in interviews, in articles and on magazine covers.
HEAVENS TO MURGATROID !!! This is awesome footage! This is one SNL episode that I've never seen. I'd seen Steve Martin play the banjo (which he does exrtremely well) but I've never seen him dance before. He MORE than holds his own with Mr Hines. Plus, I've always loved this song, which I first heard in the 1951 MGM classic musical "Singin in the Rain". THANKS so much for sharing it with us! May ALL your wishes & dreams come true in the New Year!!! :)
I have to say thanks very much for posting....I was actually at this show....it was a great show and the funny part was that they were giving out tickets at the rock center ice rink about 2 hours before the show because they were sure they could fill the studio..
if you have more clips of the show, please consider posting...

Not just Steve Martin and that white suit, but it was great to hear Don Pardo's voice again and see Howard Shore from the pre-Lord of the Rings days.

Thanks for posting this.
I saw the special when it first aired, and I have never forgotten it.
Eric Idle did a really funny piece in it, one called, "Did the dinosaurs build Stonehenge?"
A great line from that,
"We are here at the British National Museum.....by mistake."
From the segmenet with the American String Quartet, "Oh, that's going to really cut into the donkey sketch."
If you haven't seen it, get a copy.
If you have a copy, please post the rest of it.
