It is incredibly easy to categorize them as metalcore, though they are not restricted to any genre as genres are just a product of the artworld. metalcore = metal+hardcore, metallic hardcore, w/e. Especially in their early material it is easy to hear this, they used to play sped up slayer riffs in conjunction with hardcore breakdowns, drums, riffs, etc. Plus the vocals are closer to hardcore/screamo (pageninetynine screamo) than any metal band really. Either way, we can agree these guys slay.

Because they are able to create airtight, flawless compositions that show off incredible technique and perfect cohesion. Not only that, they push the envelope of the genre as a whole and manage to offer up something different every song -- all the while maintaining a solid, overall unity throughout the album. On top of all that, they bring an extreme passion and intensity that is damn near unrivaled within the rest of the music world.

Not to sound like an elitist snob, but if this comes off that way so be it. Noise is meant to sound disorienting. It creates an atmosphere. It expresses chaos, confusion, discomfort and uncertainty. To me and others who like this band (and those like them) the schizophrenic feel of the music is what appeals to us. Feedback, harsh incoherent vocals, and odd time signatures add a whole new level to aggressive music. To me, Converge literally sounds like the end of the world...
