you know not every footage sequence is related to each other plus this movie was made in 1951 and I bet ya that the average movies audience couldn't tell back then Japenese Zero from U.S. torpedo bombers or fighter planes anyway ;)
As someone already pointed out, these are the flying clips from the 1951 John Wayne film "The Flying Leathernecks", produced by Howard Hughes for RKO studios. The "official" gun camera footage from USN sources appeared in lots of post-WW2 war movies taking place in the Pacific.
These are some pretty impressive films....never seen them so crisp and sharp before. Are these digitally enhanced? (I know some are not authentic WW2 vintage -- a navy trainer with a meatball on the wings as opposed to a true A6M is an inidciation! -- but I recognize most of them as from actual combat)

Between 2:50 and 2:55 what seems to be a Hellcat joins the fight in front of the photo plane.
The smoke from the port wing of the Hellcat is probably due to him firing the guns, but he went directly into the line of fire from the phot plane.
Does anybody know if he got hit from friendly fire?
