He needs to learn how to control his emotions! He looks like a child whose learned to play the cello for the first time. His facial expressions are extremely distracting, and if he plans to become a world artist, he will need to learn to not to move and sway. It's his music that brings him talent, not looks nor his movements.
@jaredleon1 I think Steven is perfectly happy where he is now. He inspires millions in part by his expression (facial and sways). Not everyone will like him or his style, but he is reaching a whole new audience and inspiring them to LOVE what they do, and not be afraid to express that love for music.
@jaredleon1 Even more so it means that he has the skill that he can play well as well as perform. He doesn't have to focus on only playing because he can just do it, and do it well.
@jmillart While I teach my musicians proper etiquette, I clearly tell them, "Bring attention to your music, and not to yourself." If your point is valid, it need not be argued. Imagine how much better he'd be, if he devoted more time to focusing on his music rather than on himself.
@jaredleon1 You teach? I pity your poor students. If you are THIS close minded. Honey, I agree that your point HERE is valid. But if you attended a concert that one of your students held years from now after they had "made it" (IF they can get out of the rut you put them in) and they *gasp* showed emotion and appeared to enjoy themselves on stage, would you reprimand them? Are we as musicians not aloud to enjoy our passion? Or just hide our enjoyment and appear cold...
@pngebhardt Three points of argument: pathos, egos and logos. It seems as if you missed the point in making your position by using neither in your defense. My point is simple, Steven is gay (filled with mirth), and should act professional as the MAJORITY of musicians do while performing.
@jaredleon1 so one who's doing the great moves and don't show their expressions, but doesn't even play good are better than they who actually play good but show their emotions?
What determines when certain parts of the loops are played?
I know Steven records them in real-time, but how are they managed such that they play at the right time? (Since there are some parts of the song where certain loops aren't playing.)
I'd guess that it might be Steven, but that seems pretty amazing and intense to be able to control something like that with your foot while playing cello!
@BruceAchterberg The loops are are controlled by Steve with his loop pedal and effects pedal (separate pedals). His loop pedal has start, stop, and record functions. If you watch him play its amazing, he is so absorbed is what he is playing and he really pushes his instruments to the limits of what they can do. Some of his songs have minus tracks with them, which helps with some of the "background cellos" but I believe this one was all live.
I love how the cello can become a drum also it gives such an awesome sound . The kid to the right in the begin when Steven starts playing looks so amazed. One thing i must do....*stands up and claps* woo! Great work as always. :) Would really like to see you guys live someday.
@EJsacasa a mormon willl never wear red. a mormon will never cut his beard, or comb hairs. a mormon will never use an electric cello.... i hope u were jokin... not all utah citizen are mormon....
@EJsacasa have you heard his song "Moonlight", "The Cello Song", or "Cello Wars"? Those are so AWESOME!!! If you haven't listened to them, then check them out on YouTube, and subscribe to the PianoGuys. They put out some really good stuff! Also, I am LDS and I have worn red, I cut my beard and comb my hair almost every day. I don't have an electric cello though. I do have horns and am completely insane! j/k :)
it is so rare now to see some one some so happy to play he really loves not just what he plays but even what the kids played with the errors as they sre kidds no worries this guy is trully unique
@OHHYESSAHH One of the reasons Steven is so good is he knows his instrument inside out and is totally at ease with it. Maybe this is a way to encourage the youngsters to develop that comfort and freedom of expression with their instruments so one day there may be more people capable of producing the type of music Steven is such a genius with, just my thought....
@stihlthebest watch?v=KAAM3zH0ntM&feature=channel_video_title he dosent :) he communicates and behaves like any other normal person. thanks for your concerns though :)
