In New Zealand whenever you have to identify your ethnicity your main options are 1. Maori 2. New Zealand European, and then other minorties or obv. Other.

I most always tick Other and then write "New Zealander" because I'm a good 5 generations of New Zealand, its ridiculous that people expect me to claim European heritage.

Nationality, race and ancestry are NOT the same. People who claim being white are technically anglo-saxon. That term is not PC so it is not used. Me, I have to fill in the dot for Hispanic even though I am Mexican of Spanish-Moorish descent. I don't look Mexican. I think people are getting confused with the difference between citizenry and ancestry... But Tyler's original question was neither one. He was referring to when you're offered a list like "black, white, hispanic, or asian."

That's really just a way for the reader to judge you based on their own bias or stereotypes they have of you. It's really an awful way to compartmentalize people and I hope it ends soon.

Most Americans today can trace their ancestry to all over the world - that doesn't make you part of THAT particular society. Just be proud to be an American :)
