For this particular chromatic minor arpeggio I chose to omit my pinky for greater speed and efficacy. Just the same as Malmsteen and Paul Gilbert do. Utter nonsense. Its only the diminished patterns he did not use his pinky for and that is extremely common when sweeping them., Malmsteen does not use his pinky for diminished patterns, is he missing the key to metal playing? Or what about Jari Mäenpää? In my mind the best diminished arpeggio sweeper (possibly sweeper in general) around and he does not use his pinky for the dminished shapes either. The obvious advantage to that is it leaves your pinky open for expanding the licks should you

yeah past the 12th fret ill say use 3 fingers so your pinky is free so you can do 4 notes per string stuff but before the 12th fret iv always been taught in college(uni if your in usa) that you should make the least movement possible while playing guitar thus using all 4 fingers creates less movement but hey i guess its if your a taught guitarist or not im not saying that its impossible im saying using your pinky is what people who learn music do because its the classical way to play

I watched your videos and dont believe for a second that you were taught guitar in college...I was taught by theodore ziras (check him out he is on youtube, one of THE best shredders in the world, been featured in guitar world, total guitar etc) and he certainly had no silly rules like that.

The important things are consistancy and to not limit yourself, using all 4 fingers for diminished patterns past the 12th fret limits yourself so I dont do that, but having a completely different technique

Just for future reference, there is no chromatic minor scale. You may be thinking of the plain old 12-tone chromatic scale or the harmonic minor scale (which has a raised 7th degree). Either way, nice playing. It sounded interesting.

Well this was one of my solos for my old death metal band Creep Colony. I worked it out by improvising on the chromatic minor scale (Malmsteen uses it a lot) but when I recoded this clip it was complete, the way I wanted it live. I recorded it as a reference in the case that I forgot how I played it. lol
