  • Where was this?

  • those vertical lines may just be really dim Aurora!

  • Hey dave, how did you manage to shoot for so long as far as power is concerned?

  • Hi, can i just make a video with like 3-4 shots a minute, or i really have to take the pictures and put them all together? (i have a t2i too).

How did you put them all together?

    Love your videos!

  • How goes ur camera interface w/ a program on ur memory card???

  • very inspiring dave. I been wanting to do one of these and after seeing this and the documentary of the timescape I def want to start simple like you and see what I can get!

  • dave, did you use magic lantern as an intervalometer? and did that work as well as a regular intervalometer?...also, the lines in the timelapse may be caused by the uv filter...because the actually glass is way behind the uv filter, the lens hood may not block the glare because the uv filter is so up close and the lens hood is small.

  • @YungB0211 yes ML worked great as an intervalometer

  • Keep on this subject please, i have been trying for a while now with my 550D to do some night sky time lapses and im always eager to learn more about it. Thanks for the vid.

  • Great video entertaining and informative. Behind the scenes with better ingformation than most and a story to go with it. I love this kind of filmaking. I hope you plan more of these.

  • Hey Dave... LOVE the vids! Question- what settings were you using when you interviewed the ranger and what lens (any filter?) were you using to interview her? I noticed when you were showing how to crop, the background on the screen looked really over-exposed, but in the "actual" video of the interview, the image looked great... why is that? Thanks!!!

  • @omniPOTentNewB thanks, I created a garbage matt layer around here to fix that issue in post.

  • Nice video Dave. Think I'll try one on my balcony tonight. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • what do you use to move your camera for your timelaps ?

  • the park ranger, she is so cute...........

  • Hi Dave, great video, i have a 60d and tried my first time lapse a month ago, i used the eos utility because at the time i doesn't had a timer. If you have time to check out the video, here it is /watch?v=PYmNYkpZEHY

  • I am going to do my first astro timelapse soon, I have a 7D.. and am 15 :P

Cant wait to try it out :)

  • if you care visit my blog.recently i writed a nightsky timelapse tutorial.

tk-adventurephotography com you can also find it on Tom lowes site, at astrophotography section.

  • When i shoot stars, i always use RAW.It might gets a lot of space, but its a hard proceedure with big margins for errors. Thus, RAW is the most safe way to shoot.Besides, you can edit the pics afterwards much more efficiently.

  • ahhh and for time-lapse remote, check this one out: tempus.bymac.org

  • @00:24 wasn't the smartest idea.

  • I saw this effect on my 7 year old Canon A630 camera, in broad daylight. And again last week on an inside shot where I was shooting video. Inside it was dark and lots of light was coming through a window. In both cases it seemed that high contrast was the common factor. Altho the vid you shot was at night it may be detected as high contrast as far as the camera sensor\computer is concerned.

    Always good vids btw.

  • Nice try Dave. Those vertical line, are they there every photo? It could be either a mirror thing, or most likely a flare from a star/planet/plane/snow. It might if been caused by a dewdrop on the front of your lens.

  • @sjs2657g dewdrop I didn't think of that, good one.

  • love your videos! when you were talking about lighting at 3:27 what do you mean, with a flashlight? thanks

  • I thought Magic Lantern had an option for a silent shutter?

  • What do you do for power in a long timelapse? It looked like you didn't even have a full battery before you started.

  • @2Old4Toys one battery lasted for 2 hours. I started with a fresh one.

  • Video response sent Dave I love your videos and I am running the timelaps on my old channel with a credit to yours

    ATB Malc

    CPTV

  • @drumat5280 try a lens hood for the vertical light lines. Always keep in mind the heat generated by the sensor when exposing for too long, a friend ruined this Canon because of this. When you find little black spots in your pictures it is sign that the sensor is heating. This of course happens when exposing for minutes at a time. Just saying.

  • Hi Dave. Thanks for including all the details that you do. Especially the mistakes! You do an excellent job of telling these stories.

Can I ask you about a comment that you make in the video? You say something like "I remembered I had Magic Lantern on one of my 4GB cards." Isn't ML "permanently" loaded on the camera itself? Does it depend on which of your cards you use whether ML is running or not, or have I just misunderstood your comment.

    Thanks again!

  • Nice place to be! I imagine taking all those shots while breathing the fresh air.

  • you can just mask the hikers off its black so you can just mask they out xD

  • Hey Dave how long have you mad MAGIC LANTERN...I was watching one of your past videos ...and you was not to sure about putting this one your camera. What made you change your mind? How do you like it so far.

  • You learned alot, and had a great time with your kid...nothing else is needed!

    Great stuff Dave...love your videos!

  • Thanks for sharing your trip & timelapse experiment, sounds like you had a great time!

  • Was it really that hard to understand that 30s is too much? Was it really that hard to understand that 4gb is not enough?? Was it really that hard to understand that 50mm is not the lens you should make timelapse with?

  • @pav2k Sorry I guess I didn't think about those things before hand. Do you have anytime lapses on your channel I can learn from?

    Dave Dugdale - LearningDSLRVideo

  • @drumat5280 I don't do timelapse but I think it's very important to prepare good for things like that and if you don't it means you don't take it seriously. It's just my opinion...

  • @pav2k I guess I didn't take it serious enough since I screwed up. My main purpose for the trip was some one on one time with my daughter.

I will try harder next time.

I am sorry that I didn't take it seriously enough for you.

  • @drumat5280 Dude, practice makes perfect, no need to say sorry to the douchebag, everyone makes mistakes, it wasnt even much of a mistake, it was good footage, well done!

  • @pav2k Hey fuck you man, no need to be such a try hard on him, you should have been more polite about it, dickfag

  • hi, i have a Canon 600d with no magic lantern... do you think i can still learn from your videos? :)

  • which white balance did you have it on?

  • Absolutely fantastic videos, really enjoy them - keep up the good work!

  • I enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing your experience!

  • Any mist in your lens ? Look my lastest video. I've got some :(

Any ideas to reduce it ? I've tried a ventilator. It worked not that well...

  • hey dave.. what program do you used to do the time lapse video?

  • You actually seem like a pretty cool dad, frankly. Your videos have come along a long way in the time that I've been watching, I'm very impressed, keep it up. Your 'relaxed' shots, say of your camera showing settings or looking around the cam, seem very steady. Is that just using a wide lens or is there some trickery afoot like a Hague?

  • hi dave, y didn't u lowered down the image size a bit more since u dont need all that pixels for a time lapse video cause its gona be max 1920px anyway. saves up a lot of space n processing in editing unless u wana pan around in editing.

  • Great episodes! I really like the storytelling with the tech info.

  • @Knoptop Thanks Dave!

  • Take one of the campfire is interesting to see who is sedentary and who moves a bit... it is a nice light to see their faces... I've not used a digital camera... is that a D5?

  • i love your videos, very entertaining

  • What memory card do you use for recording 1080p?

  • @TSMultimediaTS I have them listed on my gear page.

  • Astrophotography has always amazed me, however there is way too much light polution where I live, even though I live in a village. The final shots looked great aswell dave, keep up the great work

    - Red Spectrum PIctures

  • Nice !!!

  • cool. and again a video that makes me wish magic lantern would hack the 7d already.

  • Forgive me if this is completely wrong, but my first thought was that the light streaks were over head planes they can easily cross a frame in 30 seconds. But I may be wrong :)

  • hi dave, thanks for your great videos!

to ged rid of unwanted startrails there is a small formula to remind:

    Shutter Time = 600 / Focal Length

so if you are shooting with the nifty fifty -> 600/50 -> Shutter Time should be at around 1/15th to get sharp stars

my best lens for night sky timelapses are the tokina 12-24@f4 where you can open the shutter for a minute without startrails while your ISOs will stay at noiseless 160 or 320 (with magic lantern)

  • hey dave, im looking for the 550 render settings on youtube and find ur vegas tutorial and i see that now ure not using it anymore.

what do u think about the render from premiere compared to vegas? bcz from what i see, ur vegas rendered videos are much better.

  • THOSE VERTICAL LINES YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT WAS FOOTAGE OF WORM-HOLES FORMING.... U CAUGHT SPONTANIOUS WORM-HOLES.

  • 1 PERSON USES A NIKON CAMERA.

  • darn. i missed my stolen 550d. -_- :(

  • that was really cool man. great work.

  • 5:20 - I guess Yogi was really hungry

  • ML has a "Silent Picture Mode."

  • awesome video dave, and congrats on a well done timelapse of the night sky, u did an amazing job!!

  • Dave, your videos have greatly increased in quality over the last year!!!!

Love the music, the flow and the commentry. Looks like a real documentary

    Thumbs up if you agree

  • haha, I bet kessler's BTS inspired ya.

  • Congrats Dave! Not bad results after all. But you got lucky this time; ML save your night. Always bring extra extra extra SD cards and batties for trips. Good tips about the noise.

  • @drumat5280

Not bad for a first time...Are you on Google+ ?

If you would like to check it out I can send you a invite.

It's like facebook and we can all follow you

  • @uncleskeetxxl Any chance at all that you might be able to send me an invite? thanks if you can.

  • @drumat5280 I'm going to try it when i go visit my grand parents this october in Dominican Republic wayyyy up in the mountains :)

  • Hi Dave thank you for your videos. I have a 550D and would like to shoot the night sky. I'm looking for a pollution filter but I don't know what to order. Can you help me?

    Thank you :)

  • Hey Dave, What the name of that iphone app to track the milky way?

  • Thank you for your help, i really want to try this out

  • are these a bunch of pictures or a long video??

  • @TheDoyleExperiment a bunch of pictures.

  • Thanks this makes me want to try a night shoot.

  • Awesome as always Dave.

  • How did you clean the noise at 1600 ISO?

  • Dave... please don't lie about this. I saw you had AT&T with a 3G signal....IMPOSSIBLE!! haha..joking of course.. and if you used Android you can get Google SkyMaps for free! :-) ....Totally jealous of your proximity to such beautiful scenery. Thanks for a great video.

  • Rule 600. Divide 600 by your focal length and that is the amount of time your allow for your camera to expose before starts streak.

    for example:

    600/50mm = 12 seconds

    600/15mm = 40 seconds

Don't ask me about crop sensors as I don't know if rule 600 is for crop or FF but it's worth it for trial and error. I have some successful pictures of the milky way

  • very helpful video, thank you very much :)

  • That was great as always. when doing timelapse I've always used the small jpeg option which has been fine for me and makes post alot easier. Have a look at 'Mt Beauty in Timelapse' on my page for the results, if you're interested. all the best. Julian.

  • @drumat5280 I'm so going to do this when I go back to Chile! Thanks for everything Dave!

  • Great stuff dave, your videos just keep getting better, I gotta try this timelapse stuff.

    You are a true inspiration.

  • I don't know about your model, but some Canons have a "quiet" mode - may be worth checking out.

It won't have given you as much space as using JPEG, but some people use SRAW (small RAW) when doing timelapses.

  • Pretty damn good Doug, I have the same 50 mil and will probably try the same thing this weekend.

  • Hey Dave, im going to try this tomorrow night, if you were do so it again, what would you change to improve it?

  • @CitiesAndColours I would use a fast wide angle lens, shoot in RAW and do a better job lighting the foreground.

  • @drumat5280 the fastest wide angle i have is a 3.5 (the sigma 10-20) maybe ill have to up the ISO

  • magic lantern saves the day!

  • @ibassplayer205 Yes it did!

  • you have 2 daughters and a son known as a dslr

  • Hi Dave,

Your vertical lines are aircrafts, I think.

    All the best from Denmark

    PS love your videos

  • @MortenCopenhagen interesting idea that they are aircrafts.

  • @drumat5280

Yes, the constant passage of aircraft is particularly irritating for deep-sky exposures. Especially in populated areas.

  • @drumat5280 hi dave, did you use the nifty fifty? I noticed the lens hood and I am wondering if it makes a big difference or not.

  • @gedeo Yes, I don't think so except those vertical lines which I have no idea what they were.

  • I just did my first as well. I was shorter though on exposure because I was in the city. Used the Magic Lantern and it worked well.

This is a great video BTW. I would have rather been in the woods than in my back yard. Keep up the great work.

  • TIP of the Day: use a white towel to cover your camera. It wil allow you to shoot for 5 hours and for up to 12 min 30 seconds with your T2I.

  • Always go for a Nikon when doing timelapses. Quiet mode, and they've got built in interval shooting :) At least the Gen 2 cameras have.

  • I've always wanted to do Astrophotography but I live in a largo city so it's almost impossible :(

  • That is an absolutely fantastic time-lapse dave! I can't wait till my remote arrives so I can get stuck in aswell :)

  • Forgetting kit or using the wrong choice of lens you always manage to keep my attention. It really is a pleasure to watch and share in your progression.. you're a natural. Another well put together video, hats off to you.

By the way I just watched it on your channel same as indemaTROY

  • @Climbatize Thanks I appreciate your comment a lot.

  • Still being processed. Weird. You must've rendered out in the new YouTube 4k preset :P

  • @OggOrbisMedia that is weird I know some people have watched in on my channel page, or you can view it on my vimeo page.

  • @drumat5280 Thanks! Now that I've come back it works... lol. I did watch it on vimeo though, and its great. I like the time lapse. I'm pretty sure that the lines are lens flares. I was going to do one like this but I noticed I can't see the stars very well in my back yard most of the time! I check the sky every once in a while before I go to bed but I haven't had a good clear night yet.

  • @OggOrbisMedia can you watch it on this page now?

  • @drumat5280 Yup sure can, about 30 minutes after I checked the first time it was up.

  • it goes f9 on his channel

  • It's still being processed, but i'm sure it was an awesome experience!

  • @classic28 can you watch it now on this page?

  • @drumat5280 I think he is saying the people who were commenting 'nice' etc. Are faking it as the video had not finished processing so they couldn't have seen it...... : ) I haven't watch it all yet but I assume nice ; )

  • You really do an awesome job with your videos and you inspire me so much! Keep up the awesome work!

  • Comment removed

  • Video is currently being processed. still. 22min after the first comment.

  • @indemaTROY That is odd I can watch it just fine on my computer and my iPhone.

  • @drumat5280 When I go to your channel it plays, but when I go directly to the video it wont.

  • This video is currently being processed. So have a time pompompom pompom. I realy want to see it now. ;)

  • Yeah come on stop faking - you aint see it yet man

  • @bmarkos there's a conspiracy going on here eh? looks like I work for them or something

  • @bmarkos I am not sure what you are saying. What am I faking?

  • @drumat5280 Dave, didn't mean you, was talking to another that commented and was just kidding - no offence - like the vids - keep em coming

  • nice

  • @moatasemalaa what's nice dude? YT did not even finish processing it.

  • @loploro it's finished here

  • @loploro can see you watch it now?

  • @drumat5280 yes it works now. sorry for the late reply, I had to take a nap over here in EU :)

    Great vid. Thanks.

  • This video is currently being processed :)!

  • @bxtonefb can see you watch it now?

  • @drumat5280 yes
