very inspiring dave. I been wanting to do one of these and after seeing this and the documentary of the timescape I def want to start simple like you and see what I can get!
dave, did you use magic lantern as an intervalometer? and did that work as well as a regular intervalometer?...also, the lines in the timelapse may be caused by the uv filter...because the actually glass is way behind the uv filter, the lens hood may not block the glare because the uv filter is so up close and the lens hood is small.
Keep on this subject please, i have been trying for a while now with my 550D to do some night sky time lapses and im always eager to learn more about it. Thanks for the vid.
Great video entertaining and informative. Behind the scenes with better ingformation than most and a story to go with it. I love this kind of filmaking. I hope you plan more of these.
Hey Dave... LOVE the vids! Question- what settings were you using when you interviewed the ranger and what lens (any filter?) were you using to interview her? I noticed when you were showing how to crop, the background on the screen looked really over-exposed, but in the "actual" video of the interview, the image looked great... why is that? Thanks!!!
Hi Dave, great video, i have a 60d and tried my first time lapse a month ago, i used the eos utility because at the time i doesn't had a timer. If you have time to check out the video, here it is /watch?v=PYmNYkpZEHY
When i shoot stars, i always use RAW.It might gets a lot of space, but its a hard proceedure with big margins for errors. Thus, RAW is the most safe way to shoot.Besides, you can edit the pics afterwards much more efficiently.
I saw this effect on my 7 year old Canon A630 camera, in broad daylight. And again last week on an inside shot where I was shooting video. Inside it was dark and lots of light was coming through a window. In both cases it seemed that high contrast was the common factor. Altho the vid you shot was at night it may be detected as high contrast as far as the camera sensor\computer is concerned.
Nice try Dave. Those vertical line, are they there every photo? It could be either a mirror thing, or most likely a flare from a star/planet/plane/snow. It might if been caused by a dewdrop on the front of your lens.
@drumat5280 try a lens hood for the vertical light lines. Always keep in mind the heat generated by the sensor when exposing for too long, a friend ruined this Canon because of this. When you find little black spots in your pictures it is sign that the sensor is heating. This of course happens when exposing for minutes at a time. Just saying.
Hi Dave. Thanks for including all the details that you do. Especially the mistakes! You do an excellent job of telling these stories.
Can I ask you about a comment that you make in the video? You say something like "I remembered I had Magic Lantern on one of my 4GB cards." Isn't ML "permanently" loaded on the camera itself? Does it depend on which of your cards you use whether ML is running or not, or have I just misunderstood your comment.
Hey Dave how long have you mad MAGIC LANTERN...I was watching one of your past videos ...and you was not to sure about putting this one your camera. What made you change your mind? How do you like it so far.
Was it really that hard to understand that 30s is too much? Was it really that hard to understand that 4gb is not enough?? Was it really that hard to understand that 50mm is not the lens you should make timelapse with?
@drumat5280 I don't do timelapse but I think it's very important to prepare good for things like that and if you don't it means you don't take it seriously. It's just my opinion...
@drumat5280 Dude, practice makes perfect, no need to say sorry to the douchebag, everyone makes mistakes, it wasnt even much of a mistake, it was good footage, well done!
You actually seem like a pretty cool dad, frankly. Your videos have come along a long way in the time that I've been watching, I'm very impressed, keep it up. Your 'relaxed' shots, say of your camera showing settings or looking around the cam, seem very steady. Is that just using a wide lens or is there some trickery afoot like a Hague?
hi dave, y didn't u lowered down the image size a bit more since u dont need all that pixels for a time lapse video cause its gona be max 1920px anyway. saves up a lot of space n processing in editing unless u wana pan around in editing.
Take one of the campfire is interesting to see who is sedentary and who moves a bit... it is a nice light to see their faces... I've not used a digital camera... is that a D5?
Astrophotography has always amazed me, however there is way too much light polution where I live, even though I live in a village. The final shots looked great aswell dave, keep up the great work
Forgive me if this is completely wrong, but my first thought was that the light streaks were over head planes they can easily cross a frame in 30 seconds. But I may be wrong :)
to ged rid of unwanted startrails there is a small formula to remind:
Shutter Time = 600 / Focal Length
so if you are shooting with the nifty fifty -> 600/50 -> Shutter Time should be at around 1/15th to get sharp stars
my best lens for night sky timelapses are the tokina 12-24@f4 where you can open the shutter for a minute without startrails while your ISOs will stay at noiseless 160 or 320 (with magic lantern)
Congrats Dave! Not bad results after all. But you got lucky this time; ML save your night. Always bring extra extra extra SD cards and batties for trips. Good tips about the noise.
Hi Dave thank you for your videos. I have a 550D and would like to shoot the night sky. I'm looking for a pollution filter but I don't know what to order. Can you help me?
