Crouch is a hold-up player, and Heskey is, Well, I don't know. Point being, if shit hits the fan, we could do with a backup striker as good as Bent.

Agreed, he isn't able to play that much because of constant injuries, but at fitness, he is arguably one of the best defenders in the world! And a fantastic captain too (even John Terry admits to Ferdinand's captaining qualities and game focus). Lampard does need to shine. As does Dawson. I don't think Rooney is the "only driving force" upfront, because Defoe is an excellent striker too.

Just look at Man Utd's performance with him and Vidic last year, and this year (when he missed half a season). You can't be a good defender when playing for a club, and then suddenly become overrated when playing internationally, that's not how it works. International teams haven't clicked during the beginning stages. Hence England unconvincingly beating mexico, and Spain scraping a 3-2 against Saudi.
@osmandan - well at the end of the day its all about opinion, You can be over rated as an international when being judged by club standards, as Manu can carry a few average players and therfore make them look good cos they have quality around them - Look at the first game -USA, - they think Jozy Alidore is superb cos he played in the prem, - scored 1 goal against southend in a cup match and got relagated with Hull after under acheiveing all season long!
@BritAU2TH Maybe, but I still don't think that, when talking about a defender of Ferdinand's standing, you can equate to being overrated, and only being "made to look good" when United won the Premier League and the Champions League when Ferdinand featured for effectively the whole season. Him and Vidic were unbreakable. It is an opinion, granted, but it is an enforced, comprehensive opinion with the evidence in plain sight. Ferdinand is, in full fitness, one of the best centre-halves around.

@BritAU2TH Poor results are expected in the beginning stages of international competitions because the teams haven't gelled together yet. Hence England being unable to beat USA, USA beating Spain 2-0 (pre World Cup), France remaining goalless against Uruguay, and so on. And England didn't play badly. England dominated. Something you must note is that the score doesn't tell the whole story in football. Prime example, the great FA Cup robbery, Arsenal vs Man Utd.

Nations used to nurture their youth teams etc, whereas now the national team is more like a club team. England has MUCH more quality in the side, so it isn't really necessary for Heskey to be there. With Rooney injury-prone, we are left with Defoe only (as an all-out striker). Crouch is a hold-up player, and Heskey is, Well, I don't know. Point being, if shit hits the fan, we could do with a backup striker as good as Bent.

Rooney has calmed down a LOT since his son was born. He was even interviewed about it and said he wanted to set an example. Capello could have DEFINITELY made a better decision. Heskey out, Bent in. Agreed, he isn't able to play that much because of constant injuries, but at fitness, he is arguably one of the best defenders in the world! And a fantastic captain too (even John Terry admits to Ferdinand's captaining qualities and game focus). Lampard does need to shine. As does Dawson. I don't think Rooney is the "only driving force" upfront, because Defoe is an excellent striker too.

Just look at Man Utd's performance with him and Vidic last year, and this year (when he missed half a season). You can't be a good defender when playing for a club, and then suddenly become overrated when playing internationally, that's not how it works. International teams haven't clicked during the beginning stages. Hence England unconvincingly beating mexico, and Spain scraping a 3-2 against Saudi.

Him and Vidic were unbreakable. It is an opinion, granted, but it is an enforced, comprehensive opinion with the evidence in plain sight. Ferdinand is, in full fitness, one of the best centre-halves around.

Hence England being unable to beat USA, USA beating Spain 2-0 (pre World Cup), France remaining goalless against Uruguay, and so on. And England didn't play badly. England dominated. Something you must note is that the score doesn't tell the whole story in football. Prime example, the great FA Cup robbery, Arsenal vs Man Utd.

@anillondon89 I think that it is damning on England that so many ethnically non-English players are in the English team. Nations used to nurture their youth teams etc, whereas now the national team is more like a club team. Players can effectively be bought - I dont know why we dont just offer citizenship and millions of pounds to the best africa has, dress them in England colours and send them out to win the world cup - true they arent really English, but neither is half of our team anyway.
