  • This, my friends, is the future of gaming.

  • HOLOGRAM QUAKE 3 ARENA MAP!!! this is heaven!

  • I know what i want for christmas this year.

  • ossum. i actually love the future.

  • Take the jumper for God's sake

  • now imagine you in that arena with like 20 other people but they see you as an avatar and you see them as an avatar in a multiplayer xbox 360 style match. with swarms of aliens or locust or whatnot running around...put in a 7.1 sound system surrounding the area and it would be like you there also if kinect shared its features you would be able to jump use your arm and leg movement to interact even more. thats the future of gaming right there

  • you got to be fucking kidding me, my eyes just exploded my head exploded everything exploded, this is so Awsome!.

  • This system would be awsome with the new kinect system form microsoft.

  • @evilgeniusv2 Might want to check my video about 3D Kinect capture on my "inofficial" channel, okreylos.

  • its Awesome :D

  • the holodec comes to life. AT LAST!!

  • jealous... I WANNA USE TEH BFG NAO!

  • Would you guys believe I've played on this? 'Twas cool beyond words. Oliver Kreylos is a brilliant guy.

  • SOLD

  • Oh my god... I can't begin to describe how awesome any game would be on that... Halo 1 would be more awesome than ever. Can you even imagine Need for Speed Shift on this rig? Combine that with a tilting seat to simulate g-forces...

Oh yeah. I almost forgot Crysis. *drool*

  • Holy Fucking Fuck!!!!!!!!! i love the game but the original maps suck.. orginal maps that way... would be assum!

  • how much i just won the lottery and i want this

  • no fuckkin way!!!!

  • Hijo de puta afortunado....

    :-)

  • badass i would pay 2 go on this

  • impressive.... now spawn some bots and shoot em! :)

  • That's amazing.. :3

  • If they put in VR rotatory floor this would be cooler

  • wtf

  • How about Half Life?

  • reminds me of that TV show 'Knightmare'

    Looks awesome man

  • youtube audio preview

  • When will this be released? *Jaw drops to the floor*. And how will it run with newer games? FINALY! proper aiming in games.... Now i dont have to use a crappy thumbstick or mouse!! Wouldnt it be better to just put a 'glasses' type screen near there face, that covers the hole view of the person using it like a virtual reality helmet, it would be cheaper, alot clearer, multiple people can use it at the same time and you wont see the controller. 2 projectors would cost 1700.

  • you need atleast 4 i think

  • I dont no anything about all this stuff but this is amazing you are very talented.

  • the system consists of 1 to 6 screens (cube) and every screen has to have two projectors behind the screen which creates two sligltly shifted displays and one needs such 3D glasses or more complicated head mounted systems to get the 3d feelin.

This tech. is actually not only a game console but a high tech virtual reality system. i saw even a simulation which is used for healin acrophobia :) patient goes the balcony and looks downside.. but she couldnt manage to stay there longer :)

  • Small correction: there is only one projector behind each screen in our system. There are basically two alternative methods: A single (very expensive) projector time-interleaving the left/right eye images, or two (cheaper) projectors with polarization filters or external shutters showing them separately. The latter doesn't work as well in a CAVE, though.

  • WOW!!!!

  • cool, but why is the gun joined to his hand?

  • Isn't that how you would hold one?

  • ah, i see what you mean.

Forgive me for not being clear.

What i meant was, why is it that it looks that way to the camera when it is in fact projected on a screen several feet in front of him.

It wouldn't look to the player from his perspective as though he was holding the gun, but for some reason it looks that way to the camera

  • Well, I was just snarky. Yours is an excellent question, and is really what this is all about.

Normally, from the player's point of view, the gun would appear to be in his or her hand. We do this by tracking the viewer's eyes, and adjusting the image accordingly.

In these videos, we tracked the camera instead, to show how a CAVE feels like to a user. Which is why the users in these videos don't actually see what they're doing, which is why this guy keeps running into walls. :)

  • ...not the future of gaming, just looks cool because hes in front of a big screen, play a racing game with suround sound, HD projecter sceen, incar view, You'll feel like your in the game...This sounds urber gay I know, but if your going to play, why not play with the best shit.

  • lol, you really have no idea what you are talking about do you ;). This is not a 'big screen', it is a CAVE, 4 rear projected screens with a $50k tracking system and Christie 3D DLP's with CrystalEyes 3 headwear.

I own probably one of the most immersive (rfactor based) home racing simulators in the world, with full motion, triple projector stereoscopy, tactile feedback and wind simulation, and it is still inferior in immersion to this system. Anyway I'll be posting vids soon.

  • Future gaming must be something like this. Cyber athletics getting closer and closer to regular athletics - as in the environment they practise it. I can imagine a room with rull 360 degree view of your game and in your hands some control devices. Maybe you jump by jumping yourself ^^

  • That, by the way, is exactly how jumping works in this demo -- you have to jump yourself. Too bad nobody can actually jump as high as the Quake guy.

  • aaaaaahahahahahahahhaha, your funny. But saying that. Lets try and bunny hop in real life. hahaha

  • @spelunkerucd

I Hope this Isn't the Future of Gaming,The Future is When you put on a Helmet (Or some other Equipment) and then Your Transported into the Game.

It's like Your ACTUALLY THERE,YOU feel The gun that The Character is Holding,YOUR Pushing the trigger to Shoot.

Touch,Smell,Taste,Hear,See. It's all there,You interact with the World as you would in Real life.

And when you say "Game Turn off" the Game turns off and you Remove the Equipment.

  • @wariofan279 u can see and hear but u cant touch taste or smell in a virtual reality i think your confused with a magical reality

  • @need2learn2spkspan

Clearly your in the Fourth Grade,Because Virtual Reality is "Magical Reality", This Video is only a Quarter of what Virtual Reality really is.

  • @wariofan279 Im in the fourth grade?? your the jackass talking about tasting, smelling and touching stuff that is'nt there in your living room by putting on some fucking mysterious helmet thats transports your mind into another world...So yeah clearly im the one that belongs in the fourth grade

  • @janschaak2 2 yrs later im standing in front of kinect jumping to jump my game character..future cool

  • awesome. can't wait til you get a workout jumping round fragging ppl in a deathmatch. what about mmorpgs? will you get rsi from skinning 2000 monsters?

  • this is gameplay for the "quake year 2050" xD

  • shooting the gun is beyond their technology and walking into walls is the goal of the game

  • wow uc davis huh

  • freakin cool!

  • Does this mean we will have a holodeck in my lifetime? Sweet!

  • No.

  • That is the awesome!!!1!

  • wow awsome

  • oo q bn

  • "OOOO" º«-_-»º=?

  • OMG! The future is here! The VR world is just around the corner!

  • looks like controlling the movement is a bitch, but damn if that isnt pure immersiveness... they need to bring this to the arcades :)

  • Wow is all I can say...

  • Wow is all I can say...

  • great idea with the threadmill if it could be done this game is such a fast paced one,it'd be better if you were straped in a very articulated sphere with motion sensors and all that.could you imagine the work out you would get from playing for 3 hours straight like i used to?it would be bad ass and i would be well fit.somebody work something up!!!

  • i would like to see some mad strafe jumping in your next video. please.

  • SWEET!! Fellow 3rd year aggie here at UCD. I was an active q3 player for many years and still play occasionally. Is there a way I could see this in person on campus? :)

  • to slow.. real quake.. he would get owned, or kicked for stand around like some afk idiot.

  • go on defrag mode and try to climb a wall with plasma!

  • wow very cool

  • HOLY FUCKIN ASS CRACKERS! dude you rock now lets get nintendo to watch this and make actual games on the wii like this.

  • That is amazing

  • cool, what you'd want is a treadmill bit so you could go a bit faster. make some pressure pads to fit under te belt of it and then you could run whilst staying on the spot. but fucking awesome none the less.

  • cool

  • that's fucking wicked. well done.

  • hopefully, theyll develop something so that you can actually play, but CAVEs are sooo cool, i just went in one in the local university about an hour ago

  • The FOV is so low :) Get that up to 109 brot.

  • lol wow thats dope haha

  • Play with one wiimote and heatraking...les that $100 .See

  • wow... that looks totally awesome. how i wish i had a room in my house like that. one day maybe...

  • this is so awesome can't wait till we get all bugs worked out in vr and we can have this in the future

  • heh

  • quiero un asi en mi room xD

  • looooooooooooool

  • Dude, please go to fog of dead! LMAO I wanna see what happens!

  • Interesting video.

  • You can crouch simply by crouching. The system knows where your head is, so it knows when you do it. You can also jump, but you'd be hard-pressed to jump as high as the Quake guy. This would need support from the software, by recognizing a jump and boosting you.

No idea how well it would work with monsters, but check out the other video (VR first person shooter), that one has enemies.

  • Ow my god! you can do this!! goto xbox or nintendo and show them your work and get like a 10 millin dollar contract! and make a MMORPG!

  • omg

  • how cool is that?

i wanna one in my livingroom :)

  • I want one @..@

  • I cant help but notice you move by just stepping on panels.

  • Actually, if you look closely, you can see a faint green "bullseye" on the floor. It's drawn by the computer along with the rest of the Quake map. When the user steps outside the inner circle, the camera starts moving in the direction he/she stepped. The farther one moves out of the inner circle, the faster the camera moves. There are no panels in the floor; the computer knows where the user is from the 3D tracking system.

  • awesome ^^

  • Yeah, Watch out that wall don't get you Baldie!

  • where's the Kaboom? I was expecting an Earth-shattering Kaboom!

  • LOL It's not that bad!

  • give me some shrooms, and this vr and a railgun... ill trip balls.

  • Kind of crappy because he keeps running into walls and crap. Nice concept though, just needs a little tweaking. Maybe they could use a treadmill like device to walk on in different directions? Any ideas?

  • I should point out that the "player" in the video is handicapped because the display only works for a single viewer. In the video, that viewer is the camera to make it look "real." As a result, the player sees a warped perspective and has a hard time navigating and aiming. In real use, it's much easier and less awkward.

  • Wow! Let me understand... the game walls are projected on the real walls (2D) and the guns are 3D holograms floating on the air? Or everithing except the man are 3D holograms "floating"?

Wow... it seems a first version of the Star Trek Holodeck....

  • Both, sort of. All imagery (game walls, guns, ...) are projected onto the real walls and the floor, but from the user's point of view (or the camera's in this case) it appears as if they are floating in space. And yes, it feels like a holodeck. :)

  • i agree with itsdaoreo haha no more wars and the country who makes the most frags win!

the vid is so cool! I can imagine myself hopping around dm17!

how about athletes duking it out in CPMA? or DeFrag?

  • Well.. one should lower the bots' AI with this controls...

But I think that with two movement sensor controllers (one for movement and one for view/aim) and a little practice one could play not bad.

Hey, if you like DeFraG, have you ever played FlagRaiders?

    digilander. libero. it/flagraiders

  • pretty sweet man

  • realy cool, i want to see the guy in defrag mod ^^

  • lol, if you keep moving like that you'll get fragged in no time

  • why not jumpering man?:D

  • We're doing this on the side, after hours and during the weekends. Our CAVE's actual purpose is more serious, of course -- see "VR Science @ KeckCAVES" here on youtube for example (to address the comment one down: this is not really useful, granted, but we did spend only zero dollars!).

In short: give us some time. And thanks for the suggestion. :)

  • really useful!! :ppppppppp hoy many millons spent ?? :o

  • Iowa State University's VR Department was doing this years ago. Might want to look into it.

  • While that's technically true, the groups who actually pioneered the technology shown in the video are the University of Illinois, Chicago (CAVE in the early 90s) and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (CAVE Quake in the late 90s).

  • do a search for augmented reality uploaded by mikkister for something similar.

the bbc has a news item about remote control aircraft.A pilot can now control 4 aircraft from his cockpit.I reckon pretty soon they will fly them from the ground in VR cockpits in a VR world, where the real jets obey your VR actions.

  • Anything new gonna come of this soon? I was looking into CAVE's and some of the autostereoscopic stuff that's out today -- amazing. great video - needs some music :). I can't wait to see one with some enemy's you can shoot and faster movement. Regardless, sweet stuff!

  • i have been dreaming since release of q3 of something pretty much like this ... imagine this in a more advanced state .. to the point of duelling and cyberathlethes ... cooler vs fatal1ty in vr :D keep up the good work this could really benifit mankind to a certain degree

  • Yeah, this can benefit mankind. No more wars, just see what country gets the most frags and that country wins. :D

  • I agree (I'm in the army)

  • no fucken way, did he just pull out a fucken gun and move around with REAL TIME responses to his hand movements, or is this video a fake?

  • No, not a fake. The little gadget I'm holding in my right hand is a tracked "wand," similar to a Nintendo Wii mote, that tells the computer exactly where my hand is and which direction I'm pointing. The rest is just a matter of drawing a 3D weapon model at the proper position and orientation (and the weapon models come straight from the Quake 3 game files).

  • you could make millions dude

  • With computer architecture and sciences moving as fast as they are, this was to be expected. Watch the Discovery channel sometime, man. :P

  • incredible!!

  • nice

  • Oh my god! That is so fuckin awesome!

  • Damn thats cool!
