THE CYMBALS ARE BEING DAMPENED. They do this to cut down the volume significantly by placing duct tape underneath the cymbals and putting pillows or cloth inside of the drums to deaden the sound. One main purpose is for filming music videos, it allows they drummer to perform and hit as hard as he/she would in a live setting without overpowering the crew or the audio track that allows them to play along, and of course any other situation that calls for dead drums.

the cymbals are taped on the bottom, thats what you do when you film music videos. you can't tighten the cymbals that much that they would choke the cymbal without breaking the nut on top of the stand

And also having heavier cymbals would do absolutely when it comes to choking them they are here, having heavier cymbals just gives them a deeper sound when u hit them. thats why rides are thicker than splash cymbals.

I'm sure it's possible that he also taped them, but yeah, I don't think tape itself could make it sound like that. They aren't choked, because if you look at them, they swing freely. His drums sound like practice toms also. Notice how they all sound the same pretty much.
