  • Oh, so true. That's why, when given the option, I sing the tenor part. Because it's harmony but it's the most interesting part and awesome.

  • The funny thing is, you need to be a mezzo-soprano to sing this song! XD

  • using this song as an audition peice ;)

  • lol. I have a broad range, so I've sung soprano, mezzo soprano and alto before. The harmonies are definitely the most irritating things about not singing soprano. But altos have the most boring harmonies!! xxx

  • Terrific!

  • watched all of them on youtube. this one's the best.

  • Finally a song I can sing!! :L

  • you are kristen chenoweth. k. bravo

  • BRAVAAAA!!!

  • WOW!!! BRAVAAA!!!

  • She sounds like a galinda from wicked

  • Testify Girl! They need mire alto's in showbuiz!

  • Altos.... always with better humour.

Well, that's what i and the rest of my alto gang think ;0)

    Definitely indentify with this

    Thanks for sharing :D

  • I LOVE this song hahaha I was stuck as an Alto all through high school . . . I feel her pain hahaha

  • im classed as a Soprano cuz i can hit a D6... however i can also hit a d3 comfortably and on a good day get a c or a b... i luv this song however i am the opposite i sing soprano but love to sing harmonies : )

  • @Vampries22 : a mezzo-soprano can sing this, too.

  • @ihartmusicals How do you get around the high C if you can't reach it properly? do you just do it badly 'for comic effect'?

  • @bbmonkey14 that's the irony - you don't. This was written for soprano, hmm yeah.

You have to have the high "C", that;s kind of the biggest peak in the whole number.

It's better to hear the high C from a sop or mezzo, and the very woolly low notes, than hear all the low range with richness, but the "C" gets missed.

I don't know any (true) altos who can sing this. I've heard it performed, really really well, live about 3 times, and they were all sops who knew how to belt safely.

  • @pianomags ok i feel better now. I couldn't hit that C. Altleast not the way I wanted to. Yeah I'm like the alto-ist alto and I don't think I could sing that song without talking it through a la Rex Harrison.

  • @bbmonkey14 Most ive heard just scream it...its a joke

  • loved your version of it :)

  • Never heard that before.... Brilliant! Well done!

  • @getsuz1 west side story

  • What musical is the "what mirror where" from?

  • @getsuz1 West Side Story

  • oh the irony.

  • @viictoriaarose exactly! i loved her performance, but this song can only be sung by a soprano.. cruel world..

  • The best by far is "What mirror where?" ... "Which? What? Where? Who? Who? Who?!"

  • Hahaha I was in tears during that last note.

  • I love this song, both sopranos and altos can laugh, it hits home for everyone. This has become one of my favourite songs to sing and dance to. It's my new shower and audition song :) Just so as an alto, I can laugh as I beg for maybe something a little more than a chorus girl :P

  • It's pretty funny if you're a bass as well.

  • this was great!!!!

  • this was great!!!!

  • i can see this girl playing glinda from wicked

  • @treblemaker24 unfortunately that role's for a soprano! :(

  • @RandomRozPandemonium that's a shame, ugh i hate being an alto! my belt only goes to a middle F. i only get to play men :( and i have no chance on broadway because i have no belt!

  • @treblemaker24 Altos = Witches, Bitches, and Britches. Oh, lament! ^^

  • PERFECT VERSION OF THIS SONG!!!

  • i love the joke at the end lol so true the altos always get the 7th lol

  • i was an alto but couldnt help but sing sop. 1 usually. i could hit the notes but we needed altos.

  • This is one of my favourite performances of this number -- she has perfect comic timing and a great voice. Fabulous!

  • This is HILARIOUS!

  • I've watched so many different performances of this song through the years, and on youtube, and I always go back to this one.. it's just so HILARIOUS. Hehe.

  • As a fellow alto I was laughing outloud..... hysterical.

  • Heh Lizziebell I watched the one by Alison Larnder, loved it.Thanks for the reccomendation.

  • I love Katherines version! I found one the other day by a girl called Alison Larnder. Check her out its hilarious, its so english!x

  • can someone please tell me where I can find the sheetmusic for this marvellous song??

    Cheers

  • this is so fucking hilarious...hahahaha

  • I must say that this is the best video out there! You remind me so much of Kristin Chenoweth =)

  • I nearly peed my pants laughing at 3:29

  • Wow, that just made my night. i feel like Altos have the prettier parts. Lol but Im a SOp 1 so who cares what I think right? lol love it.

  • @drama333queen333 SO RIGHT! WHO CARES! hahaha

  • This is SO GREAT! I want to sing this for our annual cabaret show this year!!!!

  • HAHA! I absolutely love this! Her facial expressions are the best part! Watch it every time I'm in a bad mood and it perks me up real fast!

  • Her voice is great, but I wish she'd figure out something else to do with her arms, besides hurling her hands outward from her shoulders every time she wants to emphasize. So distracting!

But she has a hilarious presence and terrific voice :)

  • hah love it!

I'm a mezzo, so sometimes I get put with the altos, and sometimes with the sopranos haha.

but I really do remember that stupid bottom part of 'three little maids'- so boring hahaha

  • lmao, as an alto, this hits home.

Though, I kind of like being an alto, but I totally understand the feeling. I was loling.

    awesome performance.~

  • @SkeletonMr dude same here. Alots rock but melodies are really missed once you become known as a good alo! :) lol!

This preformance and song needs to be brodcasted on every exsisting radio station! Its amazing!

  • @BestLittleGirlie

Ahaha. Yeah, then alto's everywhere can share this bittersweet feeling~

    Hahaha.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE! I love this song! I'm a soprano I feel I the opposite. I want to be an alto, they great the best parts in musicals! Like Eponine, Kim, The Lady of the Lake (its alto wiht range, but still alto!) and Anita. Ah, whatev.

She's a great comedic actress too!

  • all the roles you listed are actually mezzos lol. there are very few "alto" roles in the musical theatre canon. alto is mostly just a chorus part, not a solo voice title. just sayin'..

  • oh really? eheh...opps, sorry. I thought i saw somewherethat said they were altos...they're all low to me...whoops.

  • i've only just been introduced to this song by a friend of mine but this has to be the best performance of it I've found so far. she just has such great facial expressions!

  • it really is the best alto´s lament on youtube!!! amazing!

  • i am doing this at a show at my college i hope i dont screw iot up...but i dont think i can compare to that!!!! it was amazing

  • I like that best of all Alto's Laments on youtube!

    its so funny *haha

  • haha, it really is a great song!

  • My favorite part of this whole song is 2:37

    lol it makes my day!

  • I <3 it! I'm a soprano, but I usually sing alto, so I can DEFINITELY appreciate the humor! ;)

  • i was just wondering if anyone has any idea where i could find the sheet music to this song. either online or any music store in america. i have looked online to see where it can be ordered and i found nothing. and i looked in two local music stores and neither found it in their data bases.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO FIND THE SHEET MUSIC TO THE ALTO'S LAMENT.

    thanks!!!

  • my friend has the sheet music. i'll find out from her where she got it from and let you know!

  • when you find out can you let me know too pleeease???? thank yooouuu!!!

  • can anyone list all the songs that she references?

  • By The Light of the Silvery Moon

Can't Help Lovin' That Man of Mine

    Oklahoma

Sound of Music - Sound of Music

Three Little Maids - The Mikado

    Memory - Cats

I Feel Pretty - West Side Story

The Ballad of Sweeney Todd - Sweeney Todd

    There ya go ;)

  • thanks!

  • reminds me of kristen chenoweth

  • Hahaha. This is how I feel everyday my life!

  • I am learning this song and she was such an inspiration! Marvellous. Especially the first 'West Side Story' sequence ...!

  • as an alto my self we dont get the melody :-(

  • ditto!!!

  • im an alto too, and by some stroke of luck, my director found a few songs for us to do that showed off the altos becasue we were all seniors.

  • kool im only in 8th grade so we dont get anything

  • me too, all the popular songs are soprano!

  • God this girl is hilarious

  • Lol, i think people need to understand that this song isn't actually meant for "real" altos... which is normally a contralto... mezzo sopranos are often put in alto parts, though, so i think it makes perfect sense for mezzo sopranos to sing it.

  • the song is for a mezzo soprano who keeps getting cast as an alto. that is what the problem comes from. I love her though!!!

  • Wow... that was... .perky!

    She is SOOO funny!

  • wow i have seen many videos of this song and so far this girl is the best....she is hilarious!!! the best yet. her mannerism are ...yeah wow

  • I agree with froyo; this song isn't really written for a true alto. The only parts an alto can sing fantastically are the low notes from the other songs.

I also haven't met too many altos who can actually hit a C. =-/

  • i just saw someone perform this not too long ago, and you're right, she's a true alto and she couldn't hit a C. but she used it as an acting choice and SCREAMED at the top of her lungs, as if she had this marvelous high C. and then when doing the reaction from the panel, (the "wow, that was great dear...") she had more of a sarcastic tone. i thought it was a great choice and one that can be used to add to the humor of the song.

  • pitty she´s a light-coloured mezzo ! with a true dark mezzo, that would have been the bomb! but still, she´s hilarious! and a true actress!!!! very good.

  • she is definitely going somewhere in life! Great Job!

  • Love this song. It's so true! Entire pages of G's and F's below the staff become tedious after a while. :D

  • Where can you get sheet music for this song?????

  • She kinda sounds like Kristin Chenoweth

    x

  • was gonna say exactly the same :)

  • The thing with mezzo´s is that they just don´t have the dark color that makes these parts so funny, because you just neve believe they are actually given a part that´s so low. it´s a pitty. but she´s hilarious and a fine mezzo :-)

  • Love the song, hate that mezzo sopranos always sing it (and it's kind of written for a mezzo soprano too). Ironic, anyone? Where's the love for the true altos? Just make the alto parts more interesting.

  • i sang alto in Songs For A New World and it was CRAZY hard...I'm a soprano but it gave me a new respect for alto...

  • great audience

  • that was amazing

  • I'm an alto too! I feel your pain!

  • ahaha o geese... she is soooooo good at this! just made my day! :)

  • HAHA OMG LOVED IT

  • THIS IS SO TRUE.

That was me during the I Feel Pretty part. Oh, Lawd. :P

  • BwayDreamer1128, you are absolutely right!

  • haha go altos! i love the ending!

  • HIlarious!

  • That was fantastic!

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaaa! omgosh, this is hilarious! amazing job!

  • you would make a fabulous Adelaide in Guys and Dolls! :-)

  • so funny!!! LMAO

  • this is awsome

  • best performance of this EVER!! your acting is wonderful, and your high notes are amazing- much better than anybody else that i've heard sing this.

  • You might want to check Natalie Weiss's version of this as well. Her "high C" and "let this chorus girl be a star" are sick. It's fantastic!

  • yeah, i've seen it- she's amazing! but i still think this girl's high notes are better.

  • i don't know who you are or where this was recorded, but you are amazing! seriously. i laughed so hard from your last note (and the face you made). excellent job!! :)

  • SOOOOOO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!

  • There needs to be a song entitled bass's lament, seriously.

  • I totally agree!

  • A "Bass' Lament" song? Hey, sounds like a good idea. Someone should write one, because they really DO get some totally crappy parts!

  • Amen, buddy. Amen.

  • Tenor can get a bit ridiculously high too. I'm unfortunate enough to have a voice that's basically right in between bass and tenor, and I think it's going south fast.

  • haha this song is great.. i love being alto though xD

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm so glad I'm Soprano!! :-)

  • i loved it good gosh!

  • Where did you find the sheet music

  • i love it <3*

    she's amazing!

  • she has such an amazing voice! i wish i could sing it but its a little out of my range as i am actually an alto...i know exactly how she feels!

  • wow best version on youtube!

  • where can i get the sheet music to thiss?!

  • I would also liike to know this. I'd really like to sing for one of my performances.

  • I second this inquiry for some glorious sheet music ! help with that anyone ? ! =)

  • I have it... but she is so obnoxious, I protest spreading it.

  • well, i think you should rethink that protest.

because i could soo use this.

    thanks ! :D

  • This was absolutely fabulous!

What a voice, and the interpretation was absolutely perfect!

You should definitely go into musical theater. You would be absolutely astounding.

  • I agree, you should definitely go into musical theater. HAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • oh my god that's amazing!!

  • Fan-freakin-tasic.

  • Love it, Where can I get the lyrics?

  • This song is so true. XD

  • she's brilliant!

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!

This song is great, but you made this heavy piece your own!!!

    Ga-reat! Ga-rand!

  • still ,they should have an alto's lament FOR ALTO"S to sing.

  • But that wouldn't make any sense lyrically.

  • I know! I really want to sing this song for our show but My range isnt quitw that high...

  • funny, it's an ALTO'S lament, and a soprano is singing this...

  • i think her interpretation is that she can sing soprano but she always gets stuck as an alto. lord knows that's happen to me a lot >.>

  • im a soprano who can sing alto and contralto. dont know why :)

  • Katherine - fantastic job - you made me laugh out loud - the best rendition of this song I have ever seen. Keep up the great work!

  • why do tenors need a lament? we get the money notes and the big bucks.

  • Please! what we need is a bases lament. The tenors have all the good parts!

  • I so agree with you, even as baritone still don't have the money songs like King of the World or Lost in the Wilderness... just If I Can't Love Her...lol

  • Why isn't there a tenor's lament!!!

  • There'd be no point in a tenors lament, being a tenor rocks, except that most roles arent tenor, but most tenors can sing them anyway.

  • it's not just tenors as in soloists; what about in choirs? do you know how horrible it is to be a minority in every single mixed choir you join? the worst was being in a choir of 60 with only three tenors. and what about all the sadistic notes that you can't really hit as a 17-year-old chorister huh?? it's not fun projecting the top notes over the whole choir (esp sops and basses) to be "heard" at all. and you need to practice for weeks to get those notes properly.. so is there still no point??

  • Well, i am a tenor, and i love it, i can belt an Eb, its great!!!!! god, i would be agreat drag. haha.

  • Eflat? unless u mean above the register u are most definitely not a tenor

  • haha, of COURSE, tehee, that would be really imbecic

  • imbecilic**** whoopsies

  • ummm almost ALLLL roles are written for tenors. there should be bass/baritone's lament!

  • I would pay MONEY for a basses/baritone's lament. That's like, the story of my life.

  • me too!!

  • uhmm, no, no classic musical thatre role is tenor, recent stuff is, but in recent stuff its mostly alto belters and tenors, so this ong is nul & void haha.

  • more mezzo-belter, which isn't really alto. it sits in a totally different part of the voice.

  • I don't think people realize that tenor parts can get pretty flippin' weird sometimes too. Being the inner voice, it's usually us or the altos who clash against other parts. Maybe it's just me, but I've sung some pretty weird stuff as a tenor...(Ie. the Snake in Children of eden)

  • i love this girl! She's the awesomest person to ever sing alto's lament...well that i've heard/seen

  • i love this! i'm in the same situation...i always end up singing alto...

  • this is so true...although I actually love singing harmony :)

  • That's hilarious cause it's SO true!

  • She is amazing

  • ooooooooh It's three little maids. wow. I'm dumb. =]

  • What are the lyrics after The Sound of Music?

    Her comedic timing is amazing.

Easily one of the best renditions I've heard ever. =]

  • amazing! completely know how this girl feels! all through middle school i was an alto, finally in high school i got to sing soprano! FINALLY!

  • Sam here. Except I've got an extremely strange voice, and can only sing particular notes. So I haven't gotten out of singing harmony yet. Then again, I'm still in middle school... but I still hate it!

  • There should be a "Second Soprano's Lament"!

  • LOVE. IT.
