As Christian Wirth was overseeing the destruction of the bodies at Belzec, they stuck at the task for several months. But even so they shipped off the remaining Sonderkommando to Sobibor where they were murdered on arrival in late July 1943. Several graves were left untouched at Belzec and discovered by archaelogists in 1998.

Belzec was the only camp that was closed when they started to dig up the bodies and burn them. Treblinka, Chelmno and Sobibor were still open. Burning bodies started at Chelmno in the spring of 1942 and Auschwitz followed in Sept. Himmler ordered all bodies to be burnt in November 1942 once the Nazis knew of Katyn although news was not released until several months later.

The Nazis however were quite lazy. The Einsatzgruppen did not bother to dig up and burn possibly as many as 75% of their victims whereas in Belzec the SS gave up burning bodies in July 1943 leaving mass graves untouched.

Alan - what was that special unit that the nazis set up to dig up the bodies and incinerate them to try to conceal all trace of the scale of the slaughter ? They took more trouble to cover up their crimes in the Reinhard camps.
