i fish in this tournoment and 95% of the sharks are released, meat goes to charity, the scientists look at the sharks that are killed, so it helps the sharks. tagging research is done. all the waste from the sharks goes to lobster fisherman so they dont have to kill other fish for bait. and it helps the island economy alot. usually 200 boats fish the tournoment and less than 30 sharks are weighed in. so stop your belly aching and talk bad about shark finners killing 1000's every day- Joe Diodati
tomtalker2000 you dont know what your talking about , over 75% of fish never get brought in and are tagged to protect the animals, also those that are caught and brought in go to scientific research and the meat is donated
First of all, i never saw a Great White, in any of these "weigh-in's. There was a rather large Blue Shark, and what looked to be either a Mako or a Porbeagle. However....for the record, whether these contests, are "good" for tourisim or not, isn't the issue here. The issue, is further killing of nature's apex predators, with the obvious culprit being "MAN" disrupting the eco-balance yet again. Such a damn shame, if you ask me.......
This tornament goes to benefit the sharks. 99% of the sharks are released, all of the kept sharks are used either as food for the homeless, or as trap bait(this means other fish arnt killed for bait) and there are scientists on site to do research about the sharks. It really upsets me when all you ignorant hippies do is talk about how bad it is when it actually bebefits the sharks and the community greatly. Fuck your shit...
People think this creature feels no pain, it does. People think this is sport, its not. People are sick and will suffer for this. Majestic creatures like this will no longer live because of us...capable of such good but alas such evil, and this is all legal! Not for long will this barbaric tournament last. When they catch no more sharks, what will they do then?
just stop, I live on the Vineyard Year round and this helps benefit the Island economy so much that we sort of need this tournament, it brings 2.5 to 3.5 million dollars to the island, and you do know that 97% of the sharks are released and there are scientist on site to take data including stomach contents, tissue samples and other such materials nothing goes to waste and not that many sharks are killed this happens once a year and there are people that do this daily so dont complain
Fishing is a sport, but not this way, this is barbaric. The pain these animals suffer is unreal you can see by the amount of blood round the gills these sharks where battered, which is out of order.
how long ago was it when espn covered the shark tournament.

if you catch a mako, can you sell it if you have a permit or something? or are you not allowed to sell them on the market?

Please stop your belly aching. This is an annual tournament... not a daily event.
