This comes off more like a royal procession, than something like a victorious calvary riding through the streets. A tad too slow. This piece should also show off each instrument group. Andre Rieu does this. I like the way each instrument group get to show their stuff in his version. It's a simple repeating melody and they take turns...like...now it's my turn to show what I can contribute to this piece. This was okay, but I think he missed some of the intent of the piece.
@robertslistening I agree. Why? Not because I consider myself superior to "The Great Celibidache", but because I consider Ravel's tempo more appropriate to Ravel's piece than Celibidache's.

I am partial to Bolero at a tempo such as this... a real tension builder. I heard Ravel's Bolero around 1956 with Fritz Reiner conducting... majestic tempo made for a wonderful rendition. There is a version of Bolero by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Listen at the very end; one trumpet player went up on a note. Funny to hear and that they let that go on the recording...
I like the way he conducts. Ravel himself would have been horrified but I keep thinking that Bolero is the right theme to make conductors havings people discoverings his music, just the way some seeams to be involved in it.
thank God there is a little portion of THAT GENIUS - PERFORMANCE...Full version disappears from YouTube..Thank you medicitv ! Do you have an idea if this version released on DVD ? Thanks again.
And like with Bruckner, he takes Bolero at a much slower seped than everybody else, gets a richness and balance of sound sout of it that at a higher speed is impossible, WHILE BEING ABLE to maintain the music's tension.

I really don't think so. It gets to unserious.. This is too boring and not good in this tempo with the trumpets carrying the theme about 1:50. Karajan and Barenboim can conduct Bolero.
ZephyrZXA this is NOT a SONG ! songs are singing madonna, britnyes & other spearses . THIS IS THE BOLERO ! If you're in love with this...it's time to know its real name.!
It is definitely the best Bolero performance. Fantastic.

There's currently a video up of Celi conducting this in 1971, in a much quicker tempo. His facial expressions in that one are priceless!

We're pkaying this in marching band for our show, though we are doing it twice as fast as this, and It's Carmen and Bolero put together.

@BeowulfVids That is, a bastardization of both pieces. Typically american.

@herodot2 But Celibidache did EVERYTHING slower. That was his shtick.

Celi, maybe the only one that could conduct a real Bolero and not make it a military march like everyone else.
Bolero is slow.

Or cartoon-soundtrack...! ! ! Celi's Bolero is T H E BOLERO ! You are MUSICIAN ( even if not...) !
