  • damn kde 4.6 is out and it looks amazing and gnome 3.0 is out ..damn

  • kde allways works great for me never cared for gnome is a sluggish memory hog on slackware64

  • GNOME is too much like Mac IMO

I love KDE, and it got me into Linux. It looks like Windows, and that's what I'm most familiar with. I tried GDE before KDE with Ubuntu, but didn't even bother using it after a week because the GUI wasn't appealing enough. This was only a month and a half ago, though. Kubuntu-Desktop, when I learned about it, got me back into Linux. I couldn't even bother with a Mac, to be honest, I'd be bored with it,same with Gnome, KDE 4 and Windows 7 are my favorites!

  • In all the systems I run I use GNOME. KDE wants to show off too much. KDE looks nice but it's s.....l....o....w.

  • @MrPsygo Is it really slower? If there IS a drop in speed, I could hardly notice the difference.

  • Where's my... everything... Oh, that's right I don't have any features cause I use Gnome...

  • i want my time back!

  • LXDE FTW!!! =P

  • KDE = EPIC WIN

    GNOME = EPIC WIN

    CAPS LOCK = EPIC

    EPIC WIN =EPIC WIN

    WTF = EPIC WIN

  • Gnome was a visual monstrosity. Ubuntu 10.04 released a good-looking theme... and it was the first time that i wasnt annoyed with the gnome interface.

  • @ScorpioRising07

    Fail.

  • KDE is the best DE ever, but it' sonly good for people, who always click on the settings menu first, when they see an application for the first time

  • @ScorpioRising07 : you mean the ways they use pc resource, right ? :D

  • Gnome is the best in my opinion. Install DockbarX, install nautilus elementary and then choose a nice theme, install the latest graphics drivers and check out some tutorials on compiz and how it can help you be more efficient on your desktop. KDE is bulk as shit. If gnome didn't exist I would be using xfce.

  • @LOLDISNEYLAND, If Gnome didn't exist, then may God help us all.

  • Gnome is slowly but surely getting behind, and with the Shell they put the final nail in the coffin.Thats like 25% of the Gnome users will migrate to KDE and another 25% will stay with the old abandoned UI.The Shell is an epic fail.

  • @cr561979

That's not what the users are saying, just KDE fanatics.

  • KDE 3,5 is very stable.

  • shut up

  • GNOME is by far better!

  • Gnome <3

  • I love Gnome :)

  • blah blah blah... just blah, nothing to see

  • Meh, I use IceWM. Lightweight, loads fast, and looks decent, too. Not to mention that it also has virtual desktops.

  • I currently duelbooted my windows with KDE-4 and it is error free and is liquid in every aspect not to mention it's a lot faster than Windows Vista with the boot.

  • KDE is the Winner!

  • The better desktop environment is that you can use.

  • gnome all the way so easy to configure with gconf-editor

  • @codecaine would you call gconf-editor EASY? Dude, WTF?

  • yea whats hard about it? lol

  • It is pretty easy..

  • @egnost

LMFAO@ Dude WTF LMFAOOOOOO... word. I second that... if im correct he's talking abt opening a note pad like program and editing lines of text manually to customize it. Not easy (unless u knw the propper codes). Not ez at all.. :s

KDE is beautiful I'm thinking of installing it today and wiping out gnome to see wich is better. ^.^

  • @egnost The question is would you call it complex? It is simple and straight forward most people do not even need to bother with gconf-editor.

  • KDEmod > all

  • the only good distro is Arch

  • yay! /agree

  • @anthonym2121 Arch is my favourite distro, Arch+OpenBox WM. I wouldn't say it's the only good distro though, it's all a matter of preference and how you want your system. I know a lot of people that just want stuff to work right away, me i prefer to configure my system and install only the apps i want.

  • u must be retarded doin this crappy video... bla bla bla... la la la....

  • Who uses the mouse to "work" anyways .. gnome is for evince, evolution, rythmbox and other nice gnome application but for the absolute MOST part terminals give better productivity. I like awesome its nice. konqueror and nautilus why use them. Set an accelerator to Ctrl+Shift+T for menuless gnome-terminal and rock n roll. Eight workspaces and lots of terminals beats any point and drool interface even if its got spiffy transparency.

  • hah lol, sounds like someone will not throw away the old MS dos manners?

  • dude, why do you have a website? noone goes to it xD

  • You could say it simply like this:

Gnome is for the people who want to use the computer to the point, not for people who really care about the "bling" of it all ( You could theme it but nothing special )

KDE is for those who want eye candy basically, it's nothing special outside of its looks ( Some progs are good like Konqueror and others but again, nothing too diff )

  • Wrong. KDE is more eye candy oriented if you want it that way. It gives you the choice. KDE and Gnome, away from that aspect, have different approaches towards functionality. In my view you have more choices in KDE and it's pretty easy to add or modify what you already are given with. As for eye candy, honestly, I find Gnome prettier that KDE, even the latest KDE 4.3.

  • I don't get how you see it that way?

Right when you launch your OS with KDE, it immediately has eye catching looks to it. Gnome is plain and simple. There may be more choices with KDE ( I don't know ) but the point was what's diff. And most use KDE for the looks not so much for the Stability. Those aren't my words, that's preached all around.

Myself, I couldn't use KDE when I had Ubuntu simply because it would end up crashing. When I kept it Gnome, It was error free. So that's my point of view

  • You might be thinking of KDE in the latest versions 4.x. Before, all the eye candy you see now, was entirely optional and at your own risk. If you didn´t use anything fancy, it was pretty stable. This new version series are quite instable, I agree. I needed to go to gnome for a while. The new version, 4.3, it´s pretty stable.

Now, away from those differences regarding the look, there are other differences between KDE and gnome that are more important, regarding functionality.

  • These differences really come up when you interact with your system in certain way. If you use it for some regular stuff, videos, and gaming, there is no diff. I find more KDE more customizable regarding keyboard and mouse, among other stuff, which for a programmer is very important.

    regards.

  • tehcomputerman , opensuse is pronounced " open sue zuh . I'm pretty sure on that :-)

  • you should add the version numbers of kde and gnome.. this vid is old.. kde4.3 has been improved A LOT (compared to 4.0)

  • you really think so? look when the video was uploaded "June 13, 2008"

  • yes, i really think that compared to 4.0, the stability and performance of kde 4.3 has been improved a lot

  • but could it hold up to gnome in stability and such things now?

  • This video fails. KDE 4.3 is awesome.

  • Kubuntu is for older computers with a little less power in them. Xubuntu is what I prefer over Ubuntu I like the Xfce more so. I do however like the Ubuntu Studio.

  • dude, i have a PC with ubuntu. i tried kubuntu, but it really slowed it down. the kde is for faster PC's actually. :(

  • i am thinking about changing to kde on the next ubuntu release. maybe even to 64 bits

  • xfce is the fastest imo

    besides fluxbox, openbox etc.

  • KDE is complicated? I beg to differ: it's featureful.

The menu is EXTREMELY easy to use.

The general UI is clean and clear.

Dolphin is an excellent as well as clean-looking and easy-to-use file manager.

Dragon is a fast, basic and easy-to-use video player.

Juk is a fast, basic and easy-to-use music player.

Gwenview is a fast and easy-to-use image viewer, though I guess it's got enough features at startup that it's not, "basic".

I don't understand where this, "complicated" view is coming from.

  • I'm a KDE man myself. I tried gnome for a couple of months, until I couldn't keep going. I missed all the features KDE has. Gnome is beautiful, but I cannot sacrifice functionality.

  • What is so functional about it?

  • I use the terminal a lot, as I do programming. It is quite easy to search through the file system with konqueror and open the terminal right at the spot you need it.

Also, the right button of the mouse has way too many choices and you can add even more, by editing the script. KDE I found it very useful for programming. However, I combine gnome applications and KDE applications when I do development. It all depends on how you interact with the system.

  • kde es el mejor, tan solo por su capacidad de inovacion.

aceptalo; gnome es feo y siempre esta igual.

  • I would consider trying xfce. If you're used to gnome, it's very similar in terms of layout, but since 4.6 it's WAY fast, very stable and very close to gnome in terms of usability. I used to use Ubuntu, but I find compiz a little slow in Jaunty - now I'm on Xubuntu, and it's immense.

  • I like GNOME!

    KDE ist too Windows-like!

    But KDE is ok, too.

  • KDE has a lot of wonderful features. It's also much prettier than Gnome. On the other hand it would be nice if it could actually run without crashing and throwing segmentation faults all over the place. I've tried to run KDE on Kubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, and OpenSuse. I'm sorry, but KDE is nowhere near stable at the moment. Until it is I'll go with anything else.

  • @necrolinux Rubbish

  • gnome2=kde3.5

    kde4>gnome2

  • Terminal > KDE > gnome > windows vista.

    Just in my opinion

  • Lynx for browsing, Mutt for email, Vim for editing.

    Just my opinion ;)

  • funny

  • Qt is better than GTK+, it is easier to program with, and it gives us great flexibility + real oop , on the other side KDE 4 sucks, it remainds me of vista with all that worth nothing visual effect, on the other side Gnome is rock stable , no bugs, easy to learn, and faster to use. What linux really needs is a gnome like de made in Qt... eh dreams ....

  • you are an idiot. "if ubuntu ever goes enterprise" ( i assume you mean commercial as 'goes enterprise' doesn't make sense) have you looked on their website? ubuntu is and will always be free.

  • i actually like GNOME because i'm so used to it

  • console is my fav

  • In my opinion, I prefer LXDE, but that's because I'm all about fast/lightweight desktop environments. I have tried both GNOME and KDE and I can't choose which one's better.

  • Argh I can't choose. The one day I use GNOME, the other day KDE..

  • I heard KDE isnt as stable or something but i never used it, whats so good about it?

  • For my use it's GNOME all the time. Slight bit of tweeking like merging the top and bottom taskbars into one, and it's perfect for what I want to do. Never use any widgets, or fancy eye candy.

I never saw the point of GNOME's default taskbar arrangement of both at the top and bottom of the screen, it just wastes screen real estate.

KDE is too much like Windows IMO.

  • have you tried kde 4.2 Its very good

  • @gomemdesoto NO WIndows is too KDE(1998) like.

  • Installed Kubuntu 9.04 latest alpha on the weekend. Got KDE 4.2.1 in latest updates. It freaking rocks !

  • p.s. why did you even bother making a video of this? just post a txt file

  • BLAH BLAH FUCKIN BLAH!! I came for info, I got blah blah

  • ohai "Greg"!

  • XFCE FOREVER!

  • shit presentation ever

  • what is better GNOME OR KDE for ubuntu 8.10 on toshiba laptop L300?

  • i reccomend you gnome, because kde 4.1 is not full featured

  • Using KDE 4.2.1 here atm and its awesome.

  • Neh, go for Kubuntu or openSUSE 11.0. Upgrade to KDE 4.2, as it is full featured (more than any GNOME), stable and fast. More coming up...

  • KDE 4.2 rocks.

  • Ubuntu 8.10 does include gnome 2.24

  • yes

  • emmbrane just a stupid person can think that kubuntu is a good kde implementation....

    *buntu is gnome native...

try kde4 on opensuse... and tell me how stable it can be....

    buntu is for babies

  • opensuse is for babies too

  • Right. Real men only use a self-compiled version of Slackware! *rolleyes*

OpenSuSE undisputably is among the best ready-to-use, also-suitable-for-commercial-use Linux systems ever. It has also always been the best documented one, but no, wait - you don't care about this, since documentation clearly decreases the geekness factor! Almost everyone can use it, it just works reliably without hacking around... This really messes up its 1337-factor, so I see, it must be for babies. Point taken.

  • real men uses arch linux too

  • what is the difference on Gnome and KDE

  • gnome uses GTK+ and KDE uses QT technologies.

GTK+ and QT are development libraries to build graphical applications.

    I love gnome and GTK+...

  • I prefer Gnome. Fast, easy and highly customisable. KDE does have some excellent applications though.

  • What program do you use to record your videos.

  • recordmydesktop

  • Thanks.

  • @tehcomputerman recordmydesktop captures audio as well. there's no need to use Audacity :s

  • i really like both

  • I need help. I was Win user for 15(!) years, but yesterday i tried OpenSUSE on my laptop (ASUS z99h), so during the installation i got a problem - what to choose Gnome or KDE4? I surfed lots of websites and the best answer was - try both. I don't want to do it. And i'd like to ask you - what is more comfortable for experienced win user? I'm not going to be a developer i just want to run openoffice, firefox, jabber, video & music. What variant is better for me - KDE4 or Gnome. thx

  • i highly recommend gnome watch my kde rant video for more info

  • I've been using both of them for some time, but since KDE 4.1 is running really stable I use it. In kde you have the plasmoids, widgets which can make your life much easier than with gnome, which btw looks damn ugly AND is slow

  • KDE IS UGLY AS FUCK

  • All I can say on the lastest KDE is it annoyed me so much I destroyed the kubuntu 8.10 CD with a laser to vent my anger on wasting my time.

  • In a Gnome vs. KDE show off, KDE wins hands down. However, I find that most of the things that KDE does, can be done by Compiz and better. Gnome is incredibly easy to navigate through, with a minimal amount of sub-menus and so forth. But TBH, I think it's a matter of taste. I'd choose KDE over Vista any day. : D

  • As a LiveCD user of ubuntu and kubuntu I'd have to say that I found KDE to be too excessively clunky.

  • I agree.

I don't know about other users, but for me it is slower than GNOME. And GNOME is more familiar, even though my first step into Linux was in KDE (An old Red Hat machine)

  • You do know that you can use KDE in Ubuntu. KDE 4.1 rocks Gnome's socks but so did 3.5.9! I cant stand Gnome. It works amazing until you try to do something with it. I am not a repo man myself and compile everything because it is fun. But whenever people I run into want to give Linux a go I never show Gnome as they tend to not like it. KDE is more useful for me everyday but then again I don't rely on a GUI to carry me. Funny how KDE does this however. It is seemingly replacing CLI with GUI tools

  • I got kubuntu!!

  • KDE 4 on Fedora 9 is fast. Grr. For me :P

  • I am new in opensus ans I what to know there is some good soft and game fot linux?

  • Which is the best? Whichever the user prefers.

  • In my opinion KDE is better in the way that it's much more customizable. You can basically do anything with the desktop. KDE has a much better compositing manager than Gnome too (I know it's very recent and buggy). And I wouldn't say KDE is that bloated, you make it to what it is. You want it bloated it will be, it can be minimalist too.

  • OpenSuse is actually pronounced 'Open-Suzah' (SuSE was originally a german distro I think).

  • Actually, Soo-suh would be closer to the German pronunciation

  • Correct.

  • You can use 4.1 beta with opensuse 11 beta now. 4.1 rocks!

gnome rocks with "compiz-fusion --replace &"

  • my wifi doesnt work in opensuse

  • i no hopefully it will be better

  • KDE 4.1 comes out in a few weeks
