  • my large, italian family would gather around our one big tv every sunday night, back when there were only the original 13 channels and major networks cbs, abc, and nbc, and get such a kick out of columbo's MO..without a doubt, our favorite villain was Jack Cassidy, with Robert Culp coming in a close second. RIP Peter Falk..thx for sharing your talent!

  • @shegotyagood I wholeheartedly agree, but I must say that John Cassavetes and Patrick McGoohan gave Jack and Bob a run for their money!

  • Peter Falk's portrayal of Columbo really is brilliant, and it is what makes this show. I always enjoyed the way Columbo pretends to be a slow witted, sloppy, bungling detective when he is actually a calculating genius putting on an act. I just wish the writing would have been better. The stories and villains are way too cliche and some of Columbo's "traps" are stretched too thin to be believable. Nobody facing life in prison attacks or runs? A detective doesn't carry a gun or even handcuffs?

  • @workingstiff76 Ah but that's just part of the fun.

  • This guy walked right into Columbo's trap. Some genius.

  • 10:58

    Best owned face ever.

  • @KingdomPete

    Yeah, oh shit.

  • I often find geniuses to be "eccentric bores" (generally speaking). They tend to show off and behave very awkwardly in social situations.

  • Jamie Lee Curtis was the waiteress...not famous yet!!

  • coins filled with mercury?

  • the test is just a simple test for the mind, and does not have to follow the laws of nature, meaning the weight for the gold

your taking the test too literally.

  • Theodore Bikel is one of my favorite actors - VERY underrated IMHO

  • @buddmann :

I agree. I hadn't seen Mr. Bikel in anything until watching this episode and couldn't help thinking that he is an excellent actor.

Please check out the 'Columbo' clips I made for my channel.

  • @Ohad Pyrite which has always been called fools gold could be heavier then gold

  • @snuggletiger Wrong. Pyrite is called fools gold because of its appearance, color and luster.

It is actually very light compared to gold - between 4.5 to 5 g/cm3 (depending on exact composition which varies). Gold is 19.3 g/cm3.

If it was such a good imitation of gold then it wouldn't deceive just fools, right?

  • Phony gold heavier than real gold?!?! What the hell is it made from? All materials heavier than gold are also much more expensive, so they don't make a very good "phony" gold.

This completely ruined this episode for me. They should really do some facts checking before they film the episodes.

  • @OhadAlmagorOhad Isn't lead heavier than gold? Atomic mass of lead is 207.2 gm/mol and the atomic mass of gold is 196.96654

  • @lesneyvshotwheels In terms of density gold is 19.3 g/cm3 and lead is 11.34 g/cm3 - a significant difference.

Density is determined by two factors:

    1. Atomic mass - the heavier the atoms, the heavier the material.

    2. Atomic density - distance between atoms. The more atoms per volume (closer to each other), the heaver the material.

The atoms in gold are much more closer to each other than in lead, which explains the overall density difference, despite lead having a higher atomic mass.

  • @OhadAlmagorOhad How about Osmium? Its denser than gold and about half the value.

  • @lesneyvshotwheels After checking, I stand corrected. Osmium (and possibly Iridium) may be bought at lower price than gold, depending on the amount you buy, although you will find much less suppliers for these metals than gold.

However - processing these metals is very complicated and expensive (whereas gold is easily processed), due to the high temperatures needed, and also Osmium can react violently with Oxygen.

I still think producing fake gold of these metals is virtually impractical.

  • Columbo had him from the start :)

  • Doesn't the murderer give Columbo another riddle to solve sometime in the show? If so, someone PM me and let me know the riddle. Thx.

  • I saw this episode on dvd ...and it was brilliant. Thanks for sharing. Please check out the 'Columbo' clips on my channel :-D rip lieutenant

  • Theodore Bikel played the murderer in this episode. Great scripts, direction and guest stars and, of course, the greatest detective of them all. This show has brought so much joy to me for 40 years, more than most of the people I've known. :-) Peter Falk made it look so easy, with a wink and a smile and an unsurpassed intellect, as the villain in this episode discovered.

  • This solution only works if you know the weight of the fake gold, which seems like an odd thing to know.

  • @hundredpercentjuice It is not the reality of the problem that counts, it is the way of solution. And that is brilliant. However, in the real life you can measure and compare the pieces of gold more methods, so the problem could be easily solved. But it's not about reality (and this time somehow you knew the weight, other way in the reality you could have found it out). One of my favourites...

  • "Oh yeah, jus' one more thing..."

Believe it or not, this role almost went to Bing Crosby!

And there were two things that were never revealed: We never saw Colombo's wife, and we never knew his first name.

  • @MrUnidyne I've heard someone called him Ted in some episode but don't know in which one..

  • @MrUnidyne In one episode you see Columbo's driving license and supposedly you can make the name "Frank" out. In another Columbo has what is supposedly a photo of his wife on the mantlepiece.

  • A Great Show and a Great Actor. Rest in Peace Peter Falk.

  • @robertquentincobb Columbo was the best show ever.

  • This has to be one of the best episodes ever. The actor playing the villain does make you feel some sympathy for him. He's also the double of the British West Country comedian-Jethro.

  • The way Columbo solves the question always impressed me :)

  • columbo is brilliant. loved watching that show when i was a kid

  • THAT COLUMBO HAS SOME SERIOUS NOSE!

  • What a fantastic ending. Thanks for sharing, Weaponsuser.

  • columbo had many great endings ; do you have any more ?
