Did anybody ever notice that less than fifty years after the commandment "thou shalt not kill (or murder, whatever you want to call it)" God told the Israelites to wipe out all the people of Canaan including BABIES!!!! Simply put, Kingdom of Heaven is exactly that a KINGDOM. God who rules that KINGDOM has a set of laws/ qualifications that you meet in order to enter it.
Anything outside KINGDOM of Heaven is referred to as HELL. So its not that God sends you to hell, its more like your in it already (see all the lives in pain/suffering?) Goal in life is to prove to God to let U out of this Hell, by letting U into HIS kingdom

For us God is not an not the great object to be studied but the ultimate subject to be encountered.
So we embrace doubt, we embrace our fears, and our inability to grasp him because we believe that God is wholly other. Just like love there is always risk.

take this story more broadly. this is ultimately about any "ism" that divides people into good and bad, moral and immoral, etc. as soon as that happens people suffer and many die, and frequently the most innocent. god (under whatever name you prefer) is just the excuse/rationale/justification.
I just wonder what every extreme Christian (or any NON-Jewish people to be fair) of today would feel (and say to the God of teh Jews) if they were in the PLACE of the Amalekites and the Egyptians before.
