I understand the ragging on WalMart idea, but to say they do not pay their employees well is not so. In many states WM pays more than minimum wage. Plus the jobs there are not that difficult. When I DO need something that is non-grocery/non-pharmacy, I will most often shop local thrift or ebay/vintage, because I can get goods that were made IN the USA, and made much better, it's just most often they've lost their "new patina" or weren't the "current color palette"and folks are programmed to get "latest" or "newest". George, Look up a yahoo group called the "Compact". They've been doing the no-shopping pledge for a long time. I had to get my husband some clothes for work. I got him some wonderful things from the thrift store here in Chicago, tags still on the clothes, I got a Brooks Brothers 3-ply cashmere sweater in a beautiful blue for 3.99, then 1/2 off of that. Several more sweaters, and other things for him, all 1/2 off today. Why don't folks do thrift?

So explain why if so much of the economy is nonunion then why is it that we're in the tank? Furthermore German is far more unionized than the US and it's the export engine of Europe. Explain why....

This in addition to higher taxes, more regulations, and a foreign workforce eager to work. On another note, Germany's unions have decreased dramatically over the past 30 yrs or so. They're also savers.

Foreign nations also have college grads and US companies have taken advantage that they work for far less than US pros. Also Americans work far more hours and more productive than ANY western nation. We just don't get paid.

The problem lies with both the people who have traded their way of life for convenience at a cost and with corporations who export our way of life to other nations in favor of larger, more willing labor forces. It makes them feel good, and even though Wal-Mart (like most companies) doesn't have the best practices, they are still employing people in America instead of picking up and moving out of the country completely. When I DO need something that is non-grocery/non-pharmacy, I will most often shop local thrift or ebay/vintage, because I can get goods that were made IN the USA, and made much better, it's just most often they've lost their "new patina" or weren't the "current color palette"and folks are programmed to get "latest" or "newest". George, Look up a yahoo group called the "Compact". They've been doing the no-shopping pledge for a long time. I had to get my husband some clothes for work. I got him some wonderful things from the thrift store here in Chicago, tags still on the clothes, I got a Brooks Brothers 3-ply cashmere sweater in a beautiful blue for 3.99, then 1/2 off of that. Several more sweaters, and other things for him, all 1/2 off today. Why don't folks do thrift?

This in addition to higher taxes, more regulations, and a foreign workforce eager to work. Americans have lost the desire to do the hard work necessary to complete many tasks and demand a much higher wage, especially unionized workers. On another note, Germany's unions have decreased dramatically over the past 30 yrs or so. They're also savers.

Foreign nations also have college grads and US companies have taken advantage that they work for far less than US pros. German has both high taxes and a bigger union sector than the US, they are the leading export/industrial nation of Western Europe. Also Americans work far more hours and more productive than ANY western nation. We just don't get paid.

Many of them are in the European union or at least in Europe and have very few trading restrictions. The Germans have ALWAYS been on the leading edge of engineered products. For example, machinery, cars/trucks, and and chemicals. Just because one nation has a larger union sector and high taxes doesn't equal success. Look at Cuba, Zimbabwe or N Korea.

Explain why if unions had anything to with it, then why if they've fallen nearly 5x from their peak, we're not the leading nation in any production. By the way, Cuba has one of the most active biochem industries in the world. They have a life span nearly that of the US. All of that with an embargo. Of course capital is gonna move where its cheaper. Production moved to the South before moving to Mexico, before moving to Asia. Now we face a Depression despite those moves.

Are governments helped or hurt by paying ex government workers 40 years after they retire? Maybe one should ask Greece, Italy, Spain, the UK or Portugal or many US state/local retirees. Also as union membership has collapsed so has the number of high paying jobs. If you had bothered to look at BLS data, most of the job growth for the US will be low wage, low skill jobs. We have more permanent long term unemployed since the Depression, when union membership was far lower than what it was in 1975. Stay on point.

I don't think it matters what "we" feel, it isn't logically going to change THEIR behavior.
