  • Kick ass....

  • READY TO HEAR THIS AT HANGOUT FEST!!

  • Amazing cover!

  • This is how cover's should be done. Making a whole new song. I HATE straight covers. Sooooo Goddamn boring. And NO... Sexing up the vocal melody is not good enough.

  • @childofthesun32 a whole new song? nooo...they didn't make a whole new song. if they did it wouldn't be a cover...they made a shitty, dull version of the original classic. look i know they're trying to create the song in their own style, but they coulda done a much better job! this is pathetic. how do you enjoy listening to this? the guitar playing is so lousy, is the guitarist trying to sound psychedelic or something? it sounds like shit!

  • @freddiebarry93 The fact you said you can't make a "whole new song" with a cover and still have the essential notes that make it like the original means I can't take you seriously as a musician.

  • @childofthesun32 why should i care whether YOU take me seriously as musician or not? oh nooo a random person on the internet doesn't take me seriously as a musician!! i guess i better just give up, huh? thats not even the point anyway

  • The Flaming Lips really are geinus's.

They've got such a broad understanding of music in general.

    Great song.

  • i don't like this cover. it sounds very dull...they don't even go from E minor to A major in the verse part...this kinda sucks..i thought they were gonna actually do a cover of the song, not make a shitty version of it

  • @freddiebarry93 They don't even go from E minor to A major?....are you serious?.....go listen to slipknot or something.

  • @carlerictaylorjr1 well let me explain to you since you don't understand...in the song "Breathe" by Pink Floyd it goes from E minor to A major. in this song they stay on E. and why are you telling me to listen to slipknot? i don't listen to that band, i don't them at all. explain yourself.

  • wow, best cover ive seen, besides them making it there own.

  • It sounds like a mashup of Blue Floyd and Them Crooked Vultures, and yet what a great original interpretation, thus the paradox of the Lips.

  • I think it's great the Lips covered this entire album. Maybe in 25 years or so somebody will pay them homage the same way, covering Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots in its entirety. That would be pretty cool.

  • They're doing their own version of Pink Floyd's song. They aren't trying to copy it. I don't think it's up to anyone here to decide whether it's a lousy job or not. And don't think I'm one-sided. Pink Floyd are my favourite band. Ever!

  • When I heard Dark Side of The Moon by Flaming Lip, I don't like it as a Pink Floyd Fan. But i heart after it a few songs carefully and my opinion changed. It's re-stylized. Something details are better and something is worse. In my opinion: "It's Dark Side of the Moon for the new generation."

  • @QxStyles I don't like what they did with this album, I'm glad that there are other newer artist trying to pay their dues to Pink Floyd even if they do a lousy job at it lol

  • They understand Floyd! I am surprised but I knew they are very talented... I am a Floyd fan of 40 years and I say they got it! Wow.

  • @philblah I'm glad to hear that. When I finally went out and bought a copy of Dark Side (about two years ago, also, pardon me not hearing it much earlier, I'm young), the first thing I did when I finished listening was buy the Flaming Lips version. I've been a Pink Floyd fan ever since, even coming to like the earlier stuff even more than Dark Side, and the version of the album that the Flaming Lips have done is perfect in my eyes (or, rather, ears).

  • why wasnt this long extended version on the Album? or if it was, why did my version of the album have a short version of Breathe?

  • @SUPERSWEETLOU i think this is the flaming lips versrion, the album i bought has the "time/breathe " and "speak to me/breathe"

  • thumbs up if u noticed that they combined the sexy part of echoes with breath hahaa

  • @MacRuscickMusic the James Brown Funk, from Echoes

  • @AaaaJohnAaaaSmith great cover version - they could do all of Floyd and it would be fantastic - Careful with the Axe Eugene, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Echoes . . . same theory of human existence - i cant think of another band who would have to just say ok - we'll cover the whole album in a what a week - they didnt have alot of time - as bonus tracks for their own album - how slick the floyd production looks compared to FL + weezer opening with sweetleaf - Vegas one day?

  • Been a Pink Floyd fan for about 40 years. Been a Flaming Lips fan for about 5. Don't understand how anybody could object to this rocking cover. Kicks ass!

  • pretty good take on this song ,,,but i cant understand why they're doing this, like why waste time doing a cover of an entire album ???just write ya own stuff.

  • AMAZING!!!! so much wahhhhhhhhh!!!

  • whos on guitar?

  • Comment removed

  • The Flaming Lips are one of the only bands from the 90's that is still relevant today. God I love these guys. Loved Mercury Rev in their time too, but the Lips have stood the test of time. Not much of a Pink Floyd fan, but I thought Wayne and the boys' take on this classic is just great.

  • Everyone's allowed their own opinion. I, for one, would take my jacket off to drum. But hey, that's just me.

  • but its like, i mean that the original will be "better" only because its the original, a cover its just an interpretation, after that, its just a matter of tastes, there are covers that i like as much or more that the original song, but the original its still better ( i dont know if you understand what i say, i speak spanish and i think that my english is shit) besides, when you're high, this song kicks ass, haha

  • whos playing guitar?

  • Best cover of Breathe I have ever heard

  • No matter how times I hear either version, PF's will always be 100 times better in my mind. It just is one of those unreachable bars in my opinion.

  • @1992Raiden thats a really lame commentary mister, just a stupid person would say something like that

  • @guidobellamy

dude it's just my opinion, it only applies to me

I don't like this as nearly as much as pink floyd's version

sry you don't agree with it, you don't have to

  • @1992Raiden of course that the real songs always will be better than a cover song, you cant hear a cover expecting that it would be better, specially when you are talking about Pink Floyd, sorry if it offended you, now that i read my reply it sounded really violent, haha, sorry again

  • @guidobellamy no worries dude, but that comment just kind of contradicted your first comment lol

  • @owlhooves they're both very good, but pf's original version is a timeless concept album that is always going to be in the top 5 albums of all time. And I think it's personal opinion as to which is better

  • the flips version of this album is way better than pf. it sounds way crazier more outerspace. the original makes me wanna puke cuz ive heard it so many times.

  • I like the lips but that was lame, sorry! leave it alone come up with something new, covering an album like that it's just well pointless.. it's just well... there's no point... you either cover it 100% exactly and you are a fake copy, or you elaborate on it and it's no longer the original anyway!

  • I don't know the original song very well, probably heard it 3 times ever.

if I didn't know this was a cover I'd think it was a pretty good song

  • Hipsters, college students, stoners, rednecks, and washed-up PF fans who now coach high school football or something, all meeting together on youtube to disect something=very scary. I really love Floyd, the Lips, and other bands like Radiohead, Animal Collective, CocoRosie, The Antlers, etc., but I can't decide who has the most irritating fans?

  • I think TFL is a great band, but c'mon... this is just lame.

  • Fuck this shit. One of those bands you just don't cover...

  • Without a doubt , one of the best bands ever, paying tribute to one of the best bands ever. Looking forward to seeing them play the whole album at a festival in Chicago this summer.

  • It was a great idea and they in no way trivialized PFs version. I still think a cover of The Who's TOMMY is a great idea for them to pursue... As much as the Lips live show is Floyd-ish I think They are very much like The Who....But mostly they are like the motherfuckin FLAMING LIPS...the hardest working experimental artists (art on many levels) to hit the "main stream" . Looks like there are at least 36 other people who, like the mainstream, know nothing about the art of the Lips.

  • Fantastic song, respect!!

  • great album. a different perspective but definitely something worth listening to.

  • i say pink floyd is better.. but its nice to hear others sing it...

Yeah!!

  • idk about this....its almost like they arent really trying...not that they are trying to 1up PF or anything, but i dont think this version really does the song justice.

  • There's nothing wrong with being inspired by a classic and re-interpreting according to your language of expression. On the contrary, I find myself bored to death by the endless stream of rehashes of many classic songs one can hear on the radio.

  • After the tribute they did for the Who a few yrs ago performing TOMMYI could/would LOVE to see them cover something like that or Yellow Submarine. As Floydy as their show is and new sounds are I think it could be done. They are so amazing. No one ever cover Lips songs (well) like Primus. They can cover anyone but it doesnt work the othwer way around. Love it. YES!!!!!!

  • a toda madre!!! The flaming lips and Pink Floyd are awesome!!!!

  • hey that's shine on you crazy diamond combined

    with breathe

  • decent...nothing special

  • It's a different take on it, but I have always thought remakes were cheap and lame for any band. In MY own opinion I dislike TFL take on Pink Floyds music, The Floyds music is about exact precise music notes all coming together. TFL is too upbeat for me. Floyd has stated their music from Dark Side was all about precision and mellow melodious tracks. I will listen to TFL version because I enjoy their music, but Pink Floyds sound is untouchable and can never be out-done.

  • Genial!

  • this honestly just sounds like a flaming lips song with Pink Floyd lyrics over it. Sounds nothing like Pink Floyd

  • @revenge102992 ...your point? that's exactly what it's supposed to be.

  • @revenge102992 That's what a cover is numb nuts.

  • Easily the greatest and most consistent tribute album Ive ever heard...Imagine what they could do with the Doors...thatd be epic!!!

  • the lips are fucking awesome! They love the dark side of the moon so much that when they decided to cover it, they knew they didnt wanna copy it, but instead do something crazy in their own style, modernize it, and just have fun with it. and the results speak for themselves, its an amazing cover

  • This is the exact opposite of Pink Floyd. Why call it a cover if there's hardly anything giving it away (besides the fucking lyrics)?

  • @Tengent It's also the same chords :D

  • @psychokilla6669 Yeah, but this is a riff, and Floyd only did chords. :P

  • @Tengent Pink Floyd only did chords? WTF!?!?!?! Have you listened to Money? David Gilmour is not strumming any chords at the beginning. Do you have any idea what a chord is? It's a series of notes put together. A riff is a piece of music made up of chords, notes, etc. It's basically what a song is going to be. A riff can be on the bass, piano, synth, and any other instrument you can think of. Hell, even drums can have riffs. You have to be the dumbest person alive that isn't legally retarded.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green Yup. The majority of Floyd's work is built up on chords, not riffs. If you want to make a list of what Pink Floyd songs are built upon single note oriented riffs and which ones are built upon not so riffy chords, go for it.

  • @Tengent He typed that Pink Floyd ONLY DID CHORDS. Which they didn't. It's ignorant to say that EVERY single Pink Floyd song is made up of only chords. I see what you're saying, and I know this. But a riff is part of a song. The other guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green I am that guy. Look at the context. I was referring to the song Breathe, not all of Floyd's work. If I didn't make that clear I'm sorry.

  • @Tengent I'm looking at it now, and you look even more stupid.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green I can't help you out then. :((

  • @Tengent Good cover versions are when the artist puts their own individual stamp on a song. Copying the orginal is just karaoke...

  • @bullyweeclive That's great, but I'm saying there is hardly any similarity to Pink Floyd and it might as well be its own song. But hey, I'm not The Flaming Lips and they make more money than me.

  • @Tengent Ever hear Bob Dylan's (original) version of "All Along the Watchtower?" Does it sound anything like Jimi Hendrix's cover of it? But don't we still love it anyway (more than the original, I daresay)? A cover is not about making a carbon copy. It's about reinvention.

  • @U2MOFO I agree that a cover is not about making a carbon copy but I think there should be similar atmospheres expressed. As I've said before, this cover is completely unrelated to Pink Floyd besides the lyrics. And yeah I've listened to both versions of All Along the Watchtower. IMO you made a bad comparison because Jimi's cover really isn't all that different from Dylan's.

  • @Tengent The atmosphere is different, yes; but the essence is still there and, in the end, conveys the same meaning, just in a different way. I dunno. I guess I just read music like poetry. That's your opinion, but they are very different. Different enough that Hendrix's is the one that gets radio airplay; it's the one people know about. Dylan himself has been quoted saying, "THAT's what the song was supposed to sound like."

  • @U2MOFO I listen to music for different reasons than most people, but in the end it's for happiness - like it is for most people. So if you like this, listen to it and don't let me color your opinion of it. :p

  • Every one's a critic. Truth is, this is a great band covering a legendary one's magnum opus. I like it. Music politics=static drowning out the pure substance of the artform. Don't hate, congratulate.

  • Every one's a critic. Truth is, this is a great band covering a legendary one's magnum opus. I like it. Music politics=stctaic to drown out the substance of the artform. Don't hate, congratulate.

  • I feel like the Flaming Lips are trying to recreate the reaction to this music - the bewilderment and energy of the moment, rather than recreate "Breathe" note-for-note, itself.

Also notice the similarities with the funkier section of "Echoes".

  • coraggiosi e per qst grandi!!!

  • i forgot to add: love it or hate it, drozd is a f*cking musical miracle.

  • i'd rather hear this than a boring, exact re-creation of dark side note for note. if you want to hear a true butchering of pink floyd's music, there are far worse examples out there (kittie's 'run like hell' comes to mind...). the lips love pink floyd just as much as you do.

  • Shit.

  • this sh** makes my day

  • love to hear them cover "careful with that axe, eugene"

  • are there any more videos like this of them in the studio?

  • Its pretty cool, but the Dark Side of the Moon is timeless.

  • @TheFakeChannel -- yeah, though you could say "and" instead of "but." .... : )

  • the vocals are surprising similar to the original at times. i love it

  • This is really cool to see them take this song somewhere completely different.

Although, I've listened to Dark Side so many times, the Lips version just isn't comfortable for me.

  • Run rabbit run - Corre coelhinho

  • @Paszarin hehe coelhinho

  • this too, i love this.

  • great! a beatiful and original cover

  • This is pretty good! Of course it doesn't compare to Floyd, but I admire their cajones for even attempting it. It's kinda like re-writing Psalm 23 or something. But they did a decent job, and I like the feedback and distortion.

  • meh, wasn't a big fan of dsotm by the lips

  • I love them, I've got to meet Steven Drozd talked to him quite a bit. I want to meet Wayne now!

  • god damn Steve Drozd is a great drummer, i forgot how well he could drum after he started doing guitar and keys and stuff, but shit man nice return

  • Yeah, it's okay I 'spose. It still sounds like a school band learning Pink Floyd rather than a band re-interpreting and doing something fresh with a classic. The guitarist is fucking woeful - poor bugger.

  • @TheGroovyRecordStore We are in complete agreement. I watched this with an open mind and IMO it is absolute crap. That damn guitar just goes on and on and on. Their other stuff is much better

  • @TheGroovyRecordStore What you've just typed is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone here is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green - Thank you for your valuable opinion. I wonder you took time from your other lofty goings-on to reply. In future, if you don't agree with someone's opinion, how about discussing it instead of proving to the world what a keyboard commando you are?

  • mucho mejor la original

  • Whether you like this version or you're too stuck in 1973, Flaming Lips are Gods.

  • @emuellerx

    Yeaaah guess i'm stucked there

  • @2eoquin That's cool, we've all got our favorites :)

  • The best lips album since yoshimi. For the hardcore floyd fans, well, nostalgia kills music dead.

  • @stunn0000 - If nostalgia 'kills music dead' what does remaking a classic album do? Will their next 'creative' move be another complete cover of another bands masterpiece?

  • this is the first Pink Floyd cover that i have ever heard that didn't make me physically ill! in fact, its pretty fuckin' good!

  • Great cover. The best since Jane's Addiction covered Sympathy For The Devil.

  • the flaming lips take on this album breathes fresh life into an album that most people should have gotten burned out on in high school...i love this cover.

  • I love this. The drums and the bass are mesmerizing.

  • Hey this is even trippier than the original! ...But Floyd still remains THE Crystal Meth of Rock Music! ...Oh and by the way, the ones who disliked this song or video have to be fans of Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus or The Jonas Brothers!!!

  • @ACEofBASS2010 Or fans of good music. This is an awful rendition. Their disgusting butchering of this classic song is a disgrace.

  • @fuelfreak108 Hey they didnt "butcher" it, they just did it their own way and its pretty nice if you look at it from an innovative point of view, that's all!

  • @fuelfreak108 what's awful about it?

  • @ThisIsNotHappyDays The spirit of the original song is completely absent here. Taking the lyrics and basic chord structure of a song and making noise like this does not equal a good cover. The vocals are terrible, and the overall sound is disgusting. WTF is that bass doing the whole time? Seriously if you think this is anything but nasty noise, you need to get your ears checked.

  • nice alternative

  • I'm sorry but this is not the worst cover on a PF song, I'm also a Pink Floyd fan also

  • @Aynrand115 also twice? are you also an idiot also? lol

  • STEVEN ON DRUMS!!!

  • This is about catching the high from the original..... and spinning off into something...

    Gilmour would approve (maybe?)...........

  • @beelzabubba I got respect for David out the ass my friend... but fuck it if he doesn't!!! I've been a fan of PF long over FL!!!

I think that David and Roger would have more respect for the fact that someone did something new with it, rather than just run the same routine with a different voice and different instruments. They put their own swing to the beat, had some sick Adrien Belew type manipulation over the melody. This is GEWD.

  • Being almost 50 i have seen Floyd many times the flaming lips are a very hats off kinda thing in Floyds direction. coming out the Bronx in N.Y.C.the meadowlands was like my second home away from home, the Garden was my Home. You mooks who beat them up, cant play a lick.i cant either, but i know greatness when i hear it.. the Love drs/ Hometeam rule the Air waves 101.7 Florida kristi call me.my brain tumor was removed last thursday.. thnx for all prayers... Tommy Windows

  • It's a creative re-imagining...not meant to belittle the original, more to pay tribute to how awesome PF's version was. They threw their own spin on it...which is why they made the entire album, not just one or two songs... I hate hearing you people bash the lips version, it to me is better...I think that Roger would and probably is in awe of what they made of his song.

  • @twduncan11 Agreed!! I love their 're-imagining' of Dark Side !!

Also, check out Easy Star All-Stars version! Magic!!

  • @twduncan11

mmm...I don't think so....PF's version is way better...i don't think that this version is bad. But if u actually play guitar and know a thing or two about the instrument, you will easly tell that the guitar in here is a mess =S

  • @DiomedesTididax

yea, i agree about the guitar, the idea was pretty good i think, having feedback as the guitar melody, but in practice it sounds just like feedback, not nearly as trippy as the original sounded. it was quite a while before i realised they were even TRYING to created the guitar track with feedback. oh well, the rythm is pretty cool, and the vocals aint bad either.

  • @twduncan11 Nah bro. They hate Pink Floyd. That's why they did this. I heard they want to dig up Syd Barrett and shit on his decomposed chest.

  • @weggles i heard your mom sucked my kak bitch

  • @weggles then why did they cover all of dark side of the moon?

  • im buying this on CD and vinyl. i thinks it sounds good. i loved the original.

    this sounds really good too.

  • I don't like the original or this version more, per se, they're two really great bits of music. Gotta say, money on this version, not so much. but anyway the flaming lips are not just doing a tribute to pink floyd, but they are using the album to express themselves... idk i guess i just don't see a point in saying one's better than the other, because PF uses a lot of great musicianship and skill, which is not exactly the lips style. they're both psychedelic, but different.

  • I was really stoked to listen to this album and I was not disappointed. Wonderful interpretation of the original album and I tip my hat off to the Lips for keeping the elements that made the Floyd version so special and timeless. This is what Dark Side of the Moon would sound like if IT were on acid. Bravo!

  • The Lips have done a wonderful interpretation of this album. They might not be Pink Floyd but definably have enough street cred to pull this off. I would usually turn my nose up at the idea of someone doing this but I must tip my hat to this effort. Very well done.

  • This is probably what DSOTM would've sounded with Syd.

  • It's great to see Steve behind his old blue set. And to see Wayne playing anything for that matter.

  • this is a very difficult album to cover, and they did it very well. love it!

  • This is rockin'. Reminds me more of Metallica's "Leper Messiah" than the original "Breathe." Love it.

  • The Flaming Lips is a very very good band, but making a Pink Floyd song sound better than Pink Floyd requires a lot more, probably being Pink Floyd itself. Nice cover though

  • The first time i heard that i didn't like it because i was so familiar with the original and this is so different. But as time past by i started to like it more and more...

  • the album was pretty cool, i thought

  • Got the digital download the day before the vinyl release. This will become a classic as the original, which has not been out of the top 100 since it's release. I now have the vinyl which will never be opened along with a receipt showing the day of sale was the day of it's release!!! LOVE IT!!! ALL OF IT!!!

  • Sooo bad .....

  • love it!

  • rockt

  • Love it.

  • Nice, glad they are at least doing something different with the song.

  • The Flaming Lips and Pink Floyd are my most favorite bands of all time. It's really hard for me to say this but this album did not cut it for me. I would think combining these bands together would be good. I'm highly disappointed. This is the most monotonous song ever.

  • Comment removed

  • nunca se podran comparar con pink floyd ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡no me gusta esta version..los flaming lips apestan¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • i give them huge props for being brave enough to stick their necks out on an almum like this, knowing that everybody that heard it would simply pick it apart and critique the shit out of it. they took a huge risk, i applaud them for that.

what risks did your lame ass take today. enough said, so shut the fuck up! u wouldnt know good music if it fucked you in the ass while you slept in your mobile home!!!!

  • a lot of people need to get over themselves. they arent trying to improve on pink floyd( nobody can do that), they are paying respects. obviously the remaining 3 living members of the pink floyd that wrote this had agreed to it, or it wouldnt have been released. the FLAMING LIPS have been around for over 20 years, they haved served their time. i think they are a perfect fit to remake PINK FLOYD.

ive lisetened to the whole album, sounds like taking LSD in OUTER SPACE.

  • oh christ

zaquille, kill yourself, how can you even say that, this version isn't terrible, but its no where near as good as floyd

  • change layne :(

  • this isnt bad at all! this is great :D

  • I actually prefer this version to the Pink Floyd one

Go ahead and click the 'thumbs down' :P

  • amazing. i love no band more than pink floyd, darkside is and will always be my favorite album of all time, and i loved the hwll out of this. had they played it the exact same way, THEN i'd be pissed.

    Fuck the naysayers.

  • So, muscians can't play any song originially written by another musician? Wow, Mozart and Beethoven would have been last to the world quite a long time ago then. And anyone who comments on here and is a muscian better write all their own material, I don't want to EVER hear you play a cover song, that's cheating and disrespectful and all that...

    In all seriousness...

It's not about 'better' Floyd, it's about performing something you love.

  • In my opinion this song is a good take on how they perceive the song to be. What you guys aren't understanding is they KNOW it will never be as good as the original. I think the main idea is to show where the psychedelic rock genre has gone. And lets be honest the Flaming Lips are exactly that, today's Psychedelic Rock. No the song isn't as good as the original, but for what they did with it, I think it is awesome. Not many bands would even ATTEMPT to recreate Dark Side Of The Moon.

  • and no one should try to recreate darkside... its like if someone would try to recreate Stairway to heaven and seriously think they could add there own touch and get respected or even make it better. some things are better left alone, especially the best album of all time, since everyone alrdy knows the album is perfect.
