  • Ay caramba!

  • I remember him doing this skit on live TV. I was about 6 years old or so..............

  • Thank You kgammill!

I've been looking for that blooper for years and finally YOU CAME THROUGH!

That was incredible! I watched it live years ago! Do you remember the year it was?

  • Allen was truly one of the great talents America ever produced!

  • I remember watching this sketch with my Dad in 1958. He was laughing so hard just watching this master of entertainment. It warms my heart to see it again. Thanks.

  • Whenever Steve Allen did this sketch, he always called himself "Bill" Allen - I think both in imitation of many of the sportscasters of the time (like Bill Stern) who had that first name, and maybe in honor of his father, who was also named Bill.

  • This clip and the Timex gaffe with the outboard motor are a couple of the funniest moments ever in live television. Personally, I remember as a high school kid in the mid to late 60's hurrying home from school so I wouoldn't miss a minute of Steve's afternoon talk show from LA. He reprised many of the characters from the original Tonight show a la Louis Nye, Tom Poston, Bill Dana and Pat Harrington, Jr. Steve also renewed his "Man In The Street" bits out on the Streets of LA. Pure genious!

  • "The 1958 ouch baseball season . . . " gets me every time!

  • What was he laughing at?

  • @pixi2nv Himself. Steve didn't know how he was going to look until he saw his image on a tv monitor.

  • Steve played trumpet, too. He wrote a song called "Impossible". He played it on a 45 rpm record, gave out a guffaw, started playing again, a longer guffaw...you know the rest...the record was released with mostly Steve laughing and trying to get back to playing "Impossible:"...a must for fans of Steve's laugh!!!

  • I am in tears! This made my morning!

  • Hilarious, he had a great laugh!

  • A real treasure this one...........I remember seeing it the first time it aired!

  • He's laughing at his hair.

  • What I loved the most, was when Steve would crack up and never seem to stop. :)

  • He was one of the bests!

  • Thank you so much kgammill. I have'nt seen this side-splitting moment in something like twenty years.

  • This is the BEST!!!! What a total crack-up! I have not seen this in years, and I am going to watch it whenever I am having a bad day. Thanks SO MUCH for posting this wonderful classic!

  • IMHO, the funniest guy I ever saw. He never failed to get me laughing too..LOL

  • One of the funniest clips ever. I never get tired of seeing it.

Steve Allen was a comic genius and to see him lose it this bad is indelibly etched in my mind.

  • I saw this live too. He was laughing at his own image in the monitor. I loved it when he broke up.

  • Reminds me of my dope smokin' pals.

  • I remember seeing this live. I didn't know at the time, of course, why he was laughing so much, but I think for the rest of the night, I was crying laughing myself. God, how I miss Steve Allen. Funny, intelligent, master ad-libber, social conscience, the whole 18 yards.

  • I never got what was so funny?

  • @dagwood39 - As soon as he saw himself in the monitor, his hair was cracking him up so bad he could barely continue.

  • this is SUCH good stuff! What a bummer when Jack Paar took over, although we was cool in his own way, but GAWD, Allen was SO fun ny.

  • @jacicch I don't think this was from the Tonight Show. He had a syndicated show many years afterwards. This guy was a gift from God.

  • Allen once said the greasy kid stuff used on his hair made it "look dumb", which made him start laughing.

  • Does anyone have any video of Steve doing his Angry reporter bit?

  • This is when comedy didn't have to be sexual or political. Back then, we could just laugh at anything. Are we really that sophistocated now, that we can't laugh at ourselves. Laughter is the best medicine and television used to be a good perscription.

  • What a talent Steve Allen was.

  • Always love his laugh! 10+ stars!

  • A time when we had REAL entertainers!!

  • Steve Allen was always one of the great entertainers.

  • By the way, is this comic artist Kerry Gammill?

  • The last time I saw this clip was on an old Betamax tape that I recorded from TV back in the 70s. I've been looking for it again ever since...thanx a brazillion for posting it. Steve Allen was the funniest, most brilliant talent ever in television.

  • Steve had just caught a glimpse of himself in the monitor as the picture dissolved from the opening film and he never really regained composure. I really don't know or care where Steve intended to go with this sketch - just watching him crack up at himself is priceless.

  • Steve was the greatest.

  • Steve was the best TV personality ever

  • Steve was one of the great talk show hosts. He and Johnny Carson were the best-compare their talent with Conan Obrien and it shows that the "Tonight Show" is on its last leg !

  • I have to disagree. I love Steve and Johnny- both were extraordinary talents who are dearly missed- but damned if Conan isn't a wonderfully funny man in his own right.

  • Musician, composer, actor, comedian, intelectual, he had it all and is greatly missed. God bless you Steve you were one of a kind.

  • Comment removed

  • Funny stuff. he's trying his damnedest to get back into character and disintegrates. Sometimes we all just need a big stress relief and you never know when it'll hit you.

  • Amen! That's why the stagehands on the original CAROL BURNETT SHOW always had a betting as to when (never _if_) Tim Conway would drive Harvey Korman into hysterics.

  • This is hysterical...

  • I used to watch Steve Allen back in the 1950s.

This clip is one of the funniest on record.

    Laughter is strong medicine.

  • Steve Allen was one of the most intelligent people to ever be in the entertainment industry. He wrote numerious books, composed hundereds of songs and thank goodness we get to watch him on this video. This video makes any dull party into a great one. God bless you Steve!!

  • This is one of the greatest bloopers of all time! I scream with laughter like crazy!

  • How lucky could one show (The Tonight Show) get: Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson!

  • Oh buddy! I remember this when I was a kid too! It was a sight I'll never forget! I laughed like crazy then and the same as I watched it now! Thanks 4 the clip!

  • When I was a little kid about 5 I would get up late at night after the folks went to bed and turn on Steve Allen and when he would start laughing like in this clip it just made me giggle my head off, I would fall asleep and wake up to the test pattern and go to bed. I asked my mom years later why she didn't come put me back in bed and her response was "I didn't think anything that made you laugh that much could harm you". Mom was the smart one.

  • What a wonderful thing for a parent to say! Your mother must have been a very smart woman.

  • @hollyyt53 What a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing.

  • One of the funniest if not the funniest clip of all time. Steve Allen had a monitor just off camera which is why he kept cracking up every time he saw himself. This is why live t.v. was so great.

  • @redkos Absolutely! I have'nt seen this clip in at least 15 years. I can't blame him. If roles were reversed, I'd lose it myself.

  • I remember seeing Steve on a talk show discussing this clip. When he saw himself on the monitor, with that droopy hair and stupid hat, it struck him as the funniest thing he'd ever seen. Great clip!

  • Classic clip
