I wish the movie would have kept up to the opening and trailers you can find here. It wasn't bad, but I seriously expected something truely epic. In the end, there was "only" a lonely guy manipulating a bunch of other people just in order to help children get a better chance in life. I was pretty disappointed about that, also because of the "framework", it's more or less compareable with what happens in the first movie (keyword: Puppetmaster/Puppeteer).

It wasn't a lonely guy. If you watched it was the collective subconcious of the net. The dude was dead for 2 years or something before he shot himself. Motoko was one of the few who didnt have her subconcious meld. Thats why she said the net was vast and infintie, because the SSS was finally created at the end somewhere in the net.

i get what your saying.... it didnt feel epic enough. the soundtrack was amazing, but i didnt feel i learned anything from it. From the first to films i felt that epic sence of knowlage. with this one it felt lik they wanted to make something cool that was connected to the Stand alone complex sagas.... i guess its makes more sence that it was like that

I understand what you describe as a lack of epic climax. The first season (and my fav) was heavily influenced by literature (specially J.D Salinger) and older Japanese and English philosophers, which gave you a feeling of cognitivity, that twist in the end when you grasp everything. The second season Gets a little more serious mimicking current (at the time) Japanese politics, economy and foreign relations. (the series has a fantasy future where countries)

SSS to me seems like it was an out line of a season but then decided to make it a finale Movie. Currently, Japan's diminishing workforce due to a decreasing birth rate (leaving only Old ppl) is the actual Solid State Society of the film. The Stand Alone Complex team reverted it's themes from the original movie...

That's my insight, in the end it's just perception. The series has just matured.

it swept me away & kept me wanting more & more.

this amazing wonder just keeps getting better & better....this one is superb in me eyes.

Was it not in the very first film that she talks to Batou while they are on a boat about her swimming, knowing damn well that if something fails in her cyborg programing she will just sink to the bottom? ...there's something along those lines in the Original Motoko Kusanagi. I think the Original Manga fans can answer that.

I don't think I mentioned I finally went to Japan for the first time in my life^-^ @ the end of April, and the anime they're into over there differs from the "hits" here in America (Gundam, GITS, Inuyasha, Naruto, etc). About "real" anime, there's a whole world of history and variety out there to judge...the Japanese are big on weird anime

i"m pretty sure all those series are pretty big "hits" in japan. Otherwise they wouldn't have so many series/high budget. Unless you count children shows like Sazae-san and Chibi Marukochan. If you go Akibahara, you'll see a lot of shows that are popular on 2chand otaku, but not necessarily all of Japan.

I thought I would just mention this after the adult swim comments... Yes adult swim is weak, but with the exception of weak anime on the Fuse channel and some occasionally good stuff on Sci Fi Monday nights, adult swim is all that most people have. Ohh and lest we forget the "afro samurai" spike's attempt and uber weak anime which barely passes off as a gimmick (much like the Ding Dong song..). So we are unfortunatly stuck with weak sauce right now.

(I'm from LA so I know I got it soooo Easy) But still, I just don't go to lil' Tokyo and buy the stuff--no money, etc--even though I've the luxury. One thing though,Friends. Adult swim is week (I know ama get lots of haters for this comment) but back then, yeah, it was alright, now they suck, pathetically, those of us who've not have any other source of anime depend on them, and they hardly broad cast any good, or new anime. They win the minds of viewers by adding funny shit during intervals...to be honest I haven't watch if for almost a year now.

I think most anime fans, Ghost in the Shell fans in particular, feel the exact same way. Adult Swim really has gone down hill in terms of anime broadcast period length, and show quality, over the past year, which is about the time I stopped watching as well. Hopefully they will air Solid State Society, as that is about the only thing that would get me watching again.

- That's probably because most of Adult Swim's audience has only complained about the anime broadcasted on there. I hear some people walking by saying stuff like, "I tried to watch Frisky Dingo (or whatever) last night but they kept showing all that Japanese shit." That's probably why Adult Swim and anime aren't exactly "best buds" anymore. Too many complaints.

Hey, it's log1k, I just got back from Iraq, not only have I been isolated from the American world, but most of all deprived of anime T_T. Anyhow, I learned there's a thick line between domestic american media and Japanese media, be it anime or automobile industry. It's a shame people are so close minded since there's much to appreciate from both worlds...but I'm an otaku for life though!

Yeah, I have come across similar opinions by people who watch adult swim for ATHF and Boondocks, but think all anime is crap. I keep thinking, do these people really have that big of a problem with watching cartoons that are serious and well drawn.

Oh and btw, solid state society is one of the best movies that i have seen recently. I'm not sure how people new to the GitS series like it, but if you have seen all or most of the stuff before SSS, you'll love it for sure.
