if you were traveling from outside the solar system you would come to mars before reaching earth it makes sense that mars would be the site of the first landings/colonies. there are also strange moons further out such as iapetus and io and the moons of mars and even our own moon, which has structures on it as well as being too big. if you add the ancient legends about gods coming to earth and creating mankind you get some questions that seem reasonable but no one will answer them officially.
