I feel for the last person who wrote that comment. I am a Chicago native and have the exact opposite feeling watching this. I was only 8 yrs old, but remember this like it was yesterday. One of the greatest shots of all time. And I am ready for this NBA season to kick off.
That was our year (Suns) to win it all. It was an amazing year to say the least. The acquisition of Barkley, a brand new arena, new uniforms....if the Suns were to get their first championship, it would have been great to have earned it against one of the greatest teams and greatest players of all time. As a Phoenix native this hurts to the core seeing this. Although the Diamondbacks winning the World Series in 2001 against the Yankees kind of makes up for it.
I love how that whole play happened because of Barkley. He overcommitted on the pass to Pippen, which led to him getting into the lane, which forced Ainge to drop down and help, which left Paxson wide open. Love it.
Horace Grant's Game 6 stat line, 33 Minutes played, 2 Blocks, 3 Assist, 7 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 1 point. The final score Bulls 99 Suns 98. Moral of the story 1 point by 1 player makes all the difference in the world.
@rubthemtogether Yeah, coaches are always telling their players how dangerous fly-bys are & what an advantage it gives to the other team if you don't get the steal or (at least) a deflection.
I wonder what Danny Ainge is thinking as he runs back toward Paxson with no chance to contest that three-pointer (he had helped on Pippen's drive to the basket because Barkley had been beat). What an awful feeling!
the 1993 Suns might've been the best team not to win the title. Barkley, Majerle, KJ, Ainge, Chambers. DAMN that team was good. If only they hadn't lost the first two games at home. Oh well. tough to beat MJ. jordan absolutely cremated them the whole series.
@ilovegod300 the '76 team came even closer than the '93 team did. If Havlicek's bank shot or jo-jo white's free throw don't go in, Phoenix wins that game and closes the Celtics out at home. And on top of that, Paul Westphal would've become much more famous historically. Its amazing how many NBA fans don't know about him.
I don't know who it is, but the Bulls player who falls on his arse when Paxson starts shooting would have looked mighty stupid if the shot didn't drop and either the rebound went his way or PHX scored on the break.
@Aaron123Lane Nooo Pippen is at under the basket, he's the one passing to Horace Grant who passes to Paxson, it's a scrub I think, but still hilarious.
@23jamesdixon BJ Armstrong. Yeah, if the shot is missed and the ball bounces in his direction, he would not have been in position to do anything. He must have been pretty confident that Paxson was going to hit the shot. I'm sure the coaching staff said something to him about it.
@ilovegod300 I only noticed this re-watching the game last night. Would've been hilarious if the rebound came Armstrong's way and he had to launch it from the floor
@rubthemtogether Yes, it would not have been a good moment for BJ, especially if the Bulls lose that game and the Suns finish them out in 7. You know, in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Knicks that same year (93), right before Charles Smith gets denied (over & over), BJ shot one from the corner and fell down. I'm now wondering - did he get knocked down or was he falling down thinking his shot was going in (it would have given the Bulls a 4 point lead with just seconds left)?
Look how much space there was between John Paxson and the Phoenix defenders.
You could've driven an ocean liner through there. And I like how Danny Ainge starts to close in on John P. but stops about half way through as if to say "Eh. What's the point."
give Phil Jackson credit for drawing up such a perfect play. 10 seconds and every player on the court touched the ball at least once.
Jordan inbounds to Armstrong. Armstrong back to Jordan. Jordan drives it up the court. Jordan pushes it passed center court to Pippen. Pippen's defender slips up. Pippen drives up, getting the attention of the opposing center, power forward and point guard. Pippen dishes off to Grant in the paint. Grant slings it back beyond the arc to wide open Paxson. SWISH.
All five Bulls touched the ball on that last play. Jordan to Armstrong, then back to Jordan, then Pippen, then Grant, and then to John Paxon. Perfect execution! Check out B.J Armstrong just dropping to the floor when Paxon takes the shot!
Here´s Paxson for THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Does anybody know how beautifully this play The Bulls ran out of the timeout is? The difference between Phil Jackson winning a title and Doug Collins coming oh-so-close.
I just watched a video of Danny Ainge in the 1981 Sweet 16. Ainge hit the game winning shot to put away Paxson and Notre Dame. This was almost like Paxson was getting back at Ainge for his Sweet 16 loss 12 years earlier.
This play broke my heart when I living in Phoenix as a young boy. Everyone in their mother thought mike was gonna take it to the rack. The Suns collapsed on him and Jackson saw the entire chess pieces in motion 6 moves ahead. Brilliant
THis team and not just michael jordan but the whole bulls team is why basketball was so popular universally across the world, pippen, horace grant, paxson, jordan, rodman, bj, they used have basketball card shops everywhere as well.

@jungshin87 Jordan was a ruthless competitor, and did all the small things to win as well as hitting the big shots. He's like Kobe Bryant in that way.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
paxson was such a rampant, ardent homosexual at this stage of his career i was amazed he could play without getting an erection and molesting the other players on the court, who mind you were all queers too.
BJ fell to the floor cuz i think he had about 5 rebounds his whole career......... He was a 3 point shooter, thats it...... But in the finals, u just always knew that the bulls, during the 90's, were gonna pull it off...... I was 8 yrs old when this happened, watchin the game with my cousin, uncle, and father, and we went NUTS!!!!!! I remember it like it was yesterday
look at BJ when Paxson makes the shot, lol. BTW he was open too, nice defense phoenix. They took the "no penetration", no penetration" thing a little too serious
can somebody please explain to me wtf happened to bj armstrong (i think it was him) at 1:26? he's at the top and when paxson shoots he just falls down for no reason even though nobody is touching him. i have been trying to figure it out forever

@theajroseshow It was a great Suns team, perhaps their best ever, but the 1976 team that lost to Boston in the Finals may be up there as well.

@jungshin87 Jordan was a ruthless competitor, and did all the small things to win as well as hitting the big shots. He's like Kobe Bryant in that way.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
paxson was such a rampant, ardent homosexual at this stage of his career i was amazed he could play without getting an erection and molesting the other players on the court, who mind you were all queers too.

What a bone head gamble by Barkley.
rizdraver 1 year ago
This was all Barkely's fault. He let Pippen get by him and the rotation left Paxon open.

I still have no idea why BJ Armstrong fell on the floor when there was a potential rebound to get in the last 5 seconds.

look at BJ when Paxson makes the shot, lol. BTW he was open too, nice defense phoenix. They took the "no penetration", no penetration" thing a little too serious

can somebody please explain to me wtf happened to bj armstrong (i think it was him) at 1:26? he's at the top and when paxson shoots he just falls down for no reason even though nobody is touching him. i have been trying to figure it out forever
milkandmeat 1 year ago
@milkandmeat he's just like celebrating in a goofy way.... is actually very funny... people who practice sports do that a lot
tatoinglaterra 1 year ago
@tatoinglaterra yeah but he didn't know it was going in. there could have easily been a rebound go his way
milkandmeat 1 year ago
@milkandmeat he got pushed from a guy on the bench,im guessing they didnt want him to get a shot if it was rebounded an kicked out
SphSplash 1 year ago
@milkandmeat maybe he knew paxson was gonna make the shot and started celebrating before the ball went in.
