Agreed, fully and totally. Her facial and vocal contortions are hideous and laughable. I played this for my roommate, a very intelligent musician, and he has never laughed so hard. HIDEOUS. Only deaf opera queens can appreciate this joke.
@granten0re Remember this is part of an opera, she's telling a story, acting, in character. Opera singers are, in a way, singing actors. If you knew what the lyrics say, if you understood this aria within the context of the opera you -and your intelligent friend- would understand why the acting!
@MargarethMargareth Part 1: This is from the oratorio 'Juditha Triumphans' by Antonio vivaldi, about a battle between the Assyrians and the Isrealies. This aria, if my memory serves me correctly, is sung by Vaguas ,a eunuch and the squire of Holofernes (the general of the Assyrians). Vaguas wakes to find his master beheaded - Judith had seduced him, then drugged his wine and beheaded him before fleeing the Assyrian camp. Vaguas flies into a blind rage, calling the men to avenge their master.
@MargarethMargareth Part 2. He sings: Recitivo (Which Cecilia doesn't sing here). I can see no-one. But alas, alas, what is this? Blood everywhere! Alas, what a hideous sight! The headless body of my Lord lying drained of blood! Soldiers, come here! Get up, servants! Guards, wake up! We are all lost: Bethulia slipped from our grasp, and Holofernes dead. Alas, let us weep for all our misfortunes, and avenge the death of our commander.
@MargarethMargareth p.3 Aria: Armed with torches and serpents, come forth from your blind, foul kingdom, you savage partners of raging frenzy, Furies, come to us! In death, scourging and slaughter we will follow you: Iteach us, whose hearts are enraged, to avenge this murderous deed. As you can see, Cecilia really captures the spirit of this piece - the amount of rage and utter digust she portrays in this video is almost scary! I hope that this info is right as most of it was from my memory :)
In complete accord. The voice is so small it had to be miked at the Met, and you still couldn't hear it. That is why they called her "La Muta," or the deaf one. The only thing exciting is the way she jumps around and contorts her body and face -- it makes me and my friends laugh. We only listen to her when we are bored and need a good laugh out loud.
Bartoli made a revolution when she toured throughout Europe with this repertoire ten years ago. There may be singers that will do those piece justice, but Bartoli is a full-bodied musician and sings with her full body. There´s no way that any now living singer will beat her. Gauvin is brilliant, as well as Genaux, but Bartoli is the queen. You may prefer another timbre or interpretation, that´s all right, but Bartoli has lived with this music day and night for a long time! She is the best!
@dannymaestro She is the best? For what? There are two woman who are the most appropiate to massacre Mozart- Florence Jenkins and... Cecila Bartoli. But Florence is funny. Generously technique it is only 30% of bell canto. Listen to the "arie i duety Mozarta, Paradowski chomikuj" (google, not on youtube). For baroque for example Cesare aria Sesta Svegliatevi nel core (on youtube). Soprano -Contretenor (natural baritone) sings whit much more interesting timbre :)
@spenzur Listen to Her Exsultate Jubilate – Alleluja. This piece should be both gentle and powerful, cheerful bat majestic, perfectly performed but without puffing, tensions, chase, neurosis. Cecilia at this moment is like a sportswoman at the Olympic games running 400 m. Singing maschine, additionally with wrong pronunciation. Compare with phenomenal Shirley Verret. I like Cecilia for some performances of Porpora or Caldara, but sometimes she is like unfeeling automaton.
@2010wieliczka I think she has the best Exsultate Jubilate on youtube. She sings it with such a sweet, soft, gentle voice. And the way she does those coloratura runs are just perfect. I think Verret is very good too, but Bartoli puts much more joy and excitement in the piece, therefore I like Bartoli's version most. Thats why I dont understand why you say Cecilia is sometimes unfeeling. When I watch her, she is always smiling, crying, furious. She is never emtionless, unlike many other singers.
@spenzur She is very good actor an showwoman. For me this gestures are a game and it seems like a great, impressive church without Good. I hope Julia Lezniewa will not go this way but I m afraid it will be similar problem.
@2010wieliczka You mean Julia Lezhvena? I have some expectations for that girl. Her Son qual nave is perfection. We''ll see how her carrier will go :P Anyway, Im almost sure that the way Cecilia acts on stage is natural. Even the most little muscles seem to flow with the music. But I can understand that some people might find it annoying and showlike. I think its real, but only Cecilia knows.
@spenzur Compare Julia with mutation Ewa Godlewska & Derek & computer or Arno Raunig (omit problems with height notes and unnecessary scream) . When I m listening it I can say only one: baroque. Julia is my great hope for future but she must change her mentality. Perfection should be subtle. As my students compare it to the cars: coloratura singer may be like sport car or like limousine. Cecilia and Julia are like bolid F1 and there are a lot of people admiring it.
@2010wieliczka Her coloratura is spectacular, and she knows it, but Cecilia is more then just a coloratura machine. Sometimes it looks like people forget that 50% from the aria's Cecilia sings don't even have coloratura parts :P She is also a very sensitive singer I think. The way she sings ''Zeffiretti, che sussurrate'' is an example. She does this very sweet, soft approach. My father and I heard her singing this live. My father never listens to classical music, but this maked him cry.
@2010wieliczka For the ‘Armatae face et anguibus’ I like Invernizzi and Kiehr, the fist one is very emotional and has a beautiful voice, the second one (watch?v=hMwJNQ-Aok8) sings it in a slower tempo and may sound less passionate, but I love her precision and technique: she sounds totally relaxed, as if this demanding, chaotic aria was the most easy ever written.
@2010wieliczka I used to like Bartoli when fist I approached Baroque, I thought her crazy jumps were amazing, but then I thought: what else can I find in her voice? A lot of energy, but nothing more. Her voice is small and therefore often forced, is not pleasant, she can’t do legato (her horrible ‘Casta diva’ shows it) and her acting... she looks like a screaming, hysterical Verismo singer rather than a clear, rigorous Baroque singer, she’s only an empty, bad coloratura machine.
I saw Cecilia do a most incredible concert in Gstaad last summer of Handel arias with the Basel Chamber Orchestra. Incredible-- But this one-- while full of incredible energy is just too fast. But the "fashion" for singing or playing this music right now is sadly "let's see how fast we can do it just for the hell of it." *Are they afraid they'll have to pay overtime or what. There needs to be a balance-- this only proves that someone can do the minute waltz in 38 seconds
She´s fantastic, it´s her own interpretation of this tremendous aria. I like that energy, she´s diferent. When people see or listen to diferent things, they get scared.
ridiculous performance??? cacophonic sounds??? dog barking???dear drisspissdriss please you are unfair and without respect to the artist.please take my advice on your mind.remove the jam out from your ears and listen again the aria.
I hear this performance about once a year to find out why people like this. And I can't refrain from commenting once more. Cecilia can be a great singer, I quite love several of her performances but this one is just utterly ridiculous. I understand that the text is very passionate and she very much lives this but this cannot be a reason to produce such cacophonic sounds. This is not singing. I used to call it barking but I do not want to insult any innocent dog. Sorry I'll try again next year.
it's not a storm it's not a tornado it's not an earthquake.....THIS IS CECILIA BARTOLI.Im taking a low obeisance front of your magnificent art my Lady..
She is fantastic here, a vocal and acting marvel, and I am a listener who usually criticises her here on Youtube. But I take my hat off, she is brilliant! The virtuosity and involvement are astonishing, and she stays in character until after the end of this fiendishly difficult piece. Tremendous!!!
Is Cecilia an incarnation of Judith?! That was DIVINE! Performances like this are like a shot of adrenaline for the listener, so moving and impressive. Gauvin sure was nice, but not at all as fiery and thrilling as Bartoli (who`s the best Vivaldi-singing mezzo today, i.m.h.o. )
this is not singing but rather hysterical theater that makes listener think it is good or this is a proper way of singing. she looks like a monkey, even her appearance is not of an opera singer....she only thinks she is great, I have nothing to add.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this is not singing but rather hysterical theater that makes listener think it is good or this is a proper way of singing. she looks like a monkey, even her appearance is not of an opera singer....she only thinks she is great, I have nothing to add.
@rubyedelman I'm sorry, the comment that only she thinks she is great is so ignorant. So what your saying is that she sells out halls to people that don't like her? I'm confused here...
August 1716 the fortifications of Corfu “broke the spear” of the Turkish expansionism for the last time, having, thus, a large part in the decay of the Ottoman Empire That was the reason that Vivaldi wrote the oratorio "Juditha triumphans devicta Holofernis barbarie'
After all these years, her always almost ready to pop out tits still take my attention off her singing I always wait one of them to pop out in some phrase con forza :))))
Yes, Judith the widow of Manasses is in a fury. She prays that Holofernes, the Assyrian general surrounding the Israelite, will have his pride cut off with his own sword. He is smitten with her beauty, & invites her into his tent where he drinks too much.. She beheads him with two blows from his own sword & the Assyrians flee. Yes, Bartoli's interpretation is subjective. Good...
anybody who says karina gauvin is better than this clearly has issues. i mean karina is good but cecilia doesnt sing the music. she is the music!!!!!!
@eradesso I don't think that her listeners are ignorants, you are just insulting right now. The thing that not every piece suits the voice is applied to everybody, so a lot of singers choose unsuitable pieces.Mrs Bartoli may do this but that does not mean she is a bad singer, compared to others she is a valuable one. Are you a proffesional to call everybody like you did? Just my opinion.
@edengirl17 perhaps you are not aware of the meaning of "ignorant" it means someone who doesn't know something. most Bartoli fans like Netrebko's and Bocelli's fans don't even have the faintest idea on what singing technique or period style are - at all. And that is why they blindly (or deafly) support their idols in EVERYTHING their idol sings making odd claims like "best in the world" or justaposing them to names like Sutherland, Callas and the like.
@eradesso I perfectly know what ignorant is.... I am not a fan of Netrebko. And I do like Callas and Sutherland.Plus I am not that kind that states that a certain person is the best, each has its merits but few can be placed in the category ''extraordinary.'' As some singers say, there are good singers and extraordinary singers. And I agree with you on a fact, most people who comment on Opera/Music video clips have no idea of what they are talking about.
And who said I am? Do not misundersand my words.. I stated my own opinion, as everybody else. Now if you cannot accept it, your business.
At the moment I cannot sing this,it is a piece that demands a lot of experience and a great technique.I have still much to grow.Maybe in the future, if it suits me.I have never said I can do better,I have just pointed out my view about Mrs Bartoli, this is all. I respect all the opinions but I see that people attack if you do not agree with them.
@edengirl17 I don't quite care if you or anybody else love Bartoli Netrebko or other marketing products like them. What I care about is the preservation of a serious art and I will not accept disinforming comments from people who know nothing of music like "this is how baroque should be sung" or "this is Vivaldi's legato" etc
I didn't insult anyone, I stated a truth that all of you want to deny.
You will hardly find anyone in Bartoli's pages who even knows what a messa di voce is.
@eradesso I am sorry but I can not see anything disrespectful in her interpretation. In fact I find it quiet expressive. Of course you do need to consider that she was, what 27 when she made this recording? Singing is changing like everything else. today no one do sing as they used to sing in the past, nor the instruments are the same. Plus this piece w/this tempo do not have a place for a messa di voce.
@eradesso I completely agree with all your points, and this particular Bartoli is just as clownish as she ever is; however, nothing will change the opinion of her fans, because idolatry has nothing to do with reason or knowledge, as you seem to know.
Respond to this video...I completely agree with all your points, Bartoli in this particular piece is as clownish as she ever has been, but nothing will change the opinion of her fans, because idolatry is beyond reason, and Bartoli is a big industry, too. The crowd will worship what it's told to do.
@eradesso I was replying to you earlier - yes, there is Bartoli industry, and nothing you can do about popularization of opera, like Bocelli and Netrebko and Bartoli; Pavarotti was there, too. Maybe it's still better than country music.
@shanklybg if she looks like shes on drigs i want some of what shes taking cause to be able to produce suck beauty and perfect technique is wonderful...i say keep taking them drugs cecilia and send me some to lolol!!!!!
I agree with UlimorUdamenta et al - both phenomenal singers with two different interpretations. Love 'em both. But (not being familiar with the character or the lyrics) if this is (obviously) a 'furious, angry' aria - I'd sooner take on Ms. Gauvin (controlled fury) than come up against the total blood-and-guts-fury of Ms. Bartoli!
@kmcquaite Do you know I have to agree with you that they r both great singers, but to say that pick Karina Gauvin instead of Bartoli would be a dreadfull mistake. Bartoli is not human, she is out of this planet, she is divine, she incarnates every character she sings. Karina Gauvin is just perfect. And my God perfection can sometimes be boring! I'm a latin man I love Bartoli, for me she is perfection.
Splendid Cecilia! Just one question: why does anybody sing IN LATIN? I mean pronounce with latin phonetic. Cecilia, as all others do, sings in italian (others, french) latin. What a pity! For I'm affraid that not even Emperor Theodosius the Great could recognise his language! ;)
Latin has been divided into historical phases, each of which is distinguished by minor differences in vocabulary, usage, spelling, morphology and syntax. In addition to the historical phases, Ecclesiastical Latin refers to the styles used by the writers of the Roman Catholic Church in all historical phases from Late Latin on.
I love Cecilia but we must admit that, for this aria, the best version is KARINA GAUVIN's, the interpretation she gives is outstanding !!! she freaks me out !!! and her da capo is the best coz she remains simple and doesnt change every note !!
I listened to Karina Gauvin and she sings this amazingly well! However, this comparison of which is the better version is foolishness. Karina is technically a healthy and agile singer but singing is also about expressing the text... performing... Karina is using music, Cecilia has internalized the music and thus is more able to give an entertaining and more dramatic interpretation than Karina. Sheet music is only a guideline.Singers must internalize music to have more complete self expression.
you should know that it's a common habit (almost a ritual) to have sheet music with you when you sing sacred music, especially in baroque music. check out all pergolese's stabat mater videos or other pieces, you'll see that all singers have the score with them. karina of course knows it by heart when she sings. the only reason cecilia didnt have it is because the aria was part of a recital mixing sacred and secular music. that's it.
She was totally in her own world. Anyway, heard that Karina Gauvin and I think she hit better the notes at this speed than Bartoli. I mean in pitch. I love Bartoli when she is slow, wasting air in every note, smoky voice. Not at this speed.
Do it*

I hear this performance about once a year to find out why people like this. And I can't refrain from commenting once more. Cecilia can be a great singer, I quite love several of her performances but this one is just utterly ridiculous. I understand that the text is very passionate and she very much lives this but this cannot be a reason to produce such cacophonic sounds. This is not singing. I used to call it barking but I do not want to insult any innocent dog. Sorry I'll try again next year.

Talk about rage!!!

Good...

anybody who says karina gauvin is better than this clearly has issues. i mean karina is good but cecilia doesnt sing the music. she is the music!!!!!!
zander09401 1 year ago 3
@zander09401 you are wrong..to put it simple: Bartoli isn't singing music, Vivaldi, Opera however you want to call it.
The problem with Bartoli is that she is always being BARTOLI. Disrespecting the music, the composer and the style.
She just puts on shows for her fans who, without offense, are in 99% cases "ignorant" about music and technique.
Everyone can like what they like, Bartoli's fans mistake is expecting this to be correct and appropriate. That creates many Bartoli "haters".
eradesso 1 year ago
@eradesso disrespecting the music?? o god i cant be bothered to argue
zander09401 1 year ago
@zander09401 yup you can't argue that really, because it's the truth.
and to say it all, she's disrespecting the libretto too, here. bad pronunciation of many words and lack of enunciation throughout the whole piece.
eradesso 1 year ago
@eradesso I don't think that her listeners are ignorants, you are just insulting right now. The thing that not every piece suits the voice is applied to everybody, so a lot of singers choose unsuitable pieces.Mrs Bartoli may do this but that does not mean she is a bad singer, compared to others she is a valuable one. Are you a proffesional to call everybody like you did? Just my opinion.
edengirl17 1 year ago
@edengirl17 perhaps you are not aware of the meaning of "ignorant" it means someone who doesn't know something. most Bartoli fans like Netrebko's and Bocelli's fans don't even have the faintest idea on what singing technique or period style are - at all. And that is why they blindly (or deafly) support their idols in EVERYTHING their idol sings making odd claims like "best in the world" or justaposing them to names like Sutherland, Callas and the like.
eradesso 1 year ago
@eradesso I perfectly know what ignorant is.... I am not a fan of Netrebko. And I do like Callas and Sutherland.Plus I am not that kind that states that a certain person is the best, each has its merits but few can be placed in the category ''extraordinary.'' As some singers say, there are good singers and extraordinary singers. And I agree with you on a fact, most people who comment on Opera/Music video clips have no idea of what they are talking about.
edengirl17 1 year ago 2
@edengirl17 if you're so high and mighty and think you know what Vivaldi is supposed to sound like, let us hear you.
umroo2014 1 year ago
@umroo2014
I respect all the opinions but I see that people attack if you do not agree with them.
edengirl17 1 year ago
@edengirl17 I don't quite care if you or anybody else love Bartoli Netrebko or other marketing products like them. What I care about is the preservation of a serious art and I will not accept disinforming comments from people who know nothing of music like "this is how baroque should be sung" or "this is Vivaldi's legato" etc
I didn't insult anyone, I stated a truth that all of you want to deny.
You will hardly find anyone in Bartoli's pages who even knows what a messa di voce is.
eradesso 1 year ago
@eradesso I am sorry but I can not see anything disrespectful in her interpretation. In fact I find it quiet expressive. Of course you do need to consider that she was, what 27 when she made this recording? Singing is changing like everything else. today no one do sing as they used to sing in the past, nor the instruments are the same. Plus this piece w/this tempo do not have a place for a messa di voce.
caritas83 1 year ago 2
@eradesso I completely agree with all your points, and this particular Bartoli is just as clownish as she ever is; however, nothing will change the opinion of her fans, because idolatry has nothing to do with reason or knowledge, as you seem to know.
a058852 1 year ago
Respond to this video...I completely agree with all your points, Bartoli in this particular piece is as clownish as she ever has been, but nothing will change the opinion of her fans, because idolatry is beyond reason, and Bartoli is a big industry, too. The crowd will worship what it's told to do.
a058852 1 year ago
@eradesso I was replying to you earlier - yes, there is Bartoli industry, and nothing you can do about popularization of opera, like Bocelli and Netrebko and Bartoli; Pavarotti was there, too. Maybe it's still better than country music.

Bartoli!
kmcquaite 1 year ago 2

For I'm affraid that not even Emperor Theodosius the Great could recognise his language! ;)
pepix54 1 year ago
Latin has been divided into historical phases, each of which is distinguished by minor differences in vocabulary, usage, spelling, morphology and syntax. In addition to the historical phases, Ecclesiastical Latin refers to the styles used by the writers of the Roman Catholic Church in all historical phases from Late Latin on.

TheMarquelo 1 year ago
frenchviewer1994 1 year ago 4
chanze92 1 year ago
I love Cecilia but we must admit that, for this aria, the best version is KARINA GAUVIN's, the interpretation she gives is outstanding !!! she freaks me out !!! and her da capo is the best coz she remains simple and doesnt change every note !!
frenchviewer1994 1 year ago 3
I listened to Karina Gauvin and she sings this amazingly well! However, this comparison of which is the better version is foolishness. Karina is technically a healthy and agile singer but singing is also about expressing the text... performing... Karina is using music, Cecilia has internalized the music and thus is more able to give an entertaining and more dramatic interpretation than Karina. Sheet music is only a guideline.Singers must internalize music to have more complete self expression.
morishiba 1 year ago
you should know that it's a common habit (almost a ritual) to have sheet music with you when you sing sacred music, especially in baroque music. check out all pergolese's stabat mater videos or other pieces, you'll see that all singers have the score with them. karina of course knows it by heart when she sings. the only reason cecilia didnt have it is because the aria was part of a recital mixing sacred and secular music. that's it.

TheMarquelo 2 years ago
TheMarquelo 2 years ago
gran cantante.

She was totally in her own world. Anyway, heard that Karina Gauvin and I think she hit better the notes at this speed than Bartoli. I mean in pitch. I love Bartoli when she is slow, wasting air in every note, smoky voice. Not at this speed.
