I believe it is also worth mentioning that Alois was weaker than Basile before all this started, so to see Alois breaking down the rather large barricade at the door...

Actually, yes they are alive, but they are not the monsters of this game: Justine is. The three walking corpses you in the game are actually Justine's suitors: Alois, Basile, and Malo. The reason they all look like this is because that bitch had them tortured, blinded, and driven to a state of insanity, with Basile being the closest to sane. All of these suitors want Justine dead, for different reasons. Alois: Loves Justine, to death. Basile: Mad about the torture. Malo: Cannibalism.

The suitors' personalities are very interesting, anyway. Malo is the 'most far gone', he's absolutely psychotic. Alois seems to still love Justine very much, he never yells at her but always calls hopefully. Basile is just an angry bastard, but loads of fun to mess with.
