Here is the mechanism, circa 1974 when I first got involved: target bright young people who's intellect outweighs their wisdom and common sense. The usual problem they are trying to solve is success with the opposite gender. Train them in some useful communications techniques that actually work. By the time they reads the sci-fi horseshit stuff they have already bought into a belief that Scientology is for real. People tend to believe what they want to believe.
I'm sure at the time you probably noticed some good looking women in cos which is like an open invitation to join. In that era there wasn't much info out there to help you either. Good comment.

I watched a tv show last night, Scare Tactics. These actors were pranking this guy pretending they were a cult and were trying to get this teenager to drink the koolaid and transcend to the after life. Even though he was watching a guy laying on the ground who just drank the koolaid was in pain saying don't drink it. Every one was saying drink the koolaid, and he drank it. Scientology is probably looking to recruit this guy, lol. People are so gulliable and so easily peer pressured into ANYTHING
I think it's unfair to say Scientologists are mentaly deficcent. Most people who investigate cults, including me, have seen first hand that cult members are on average smarter than the average person off the street. They just undergo a system of mind control and hypnosis that built the third reich. The human mind is not as strong as we'd like to believe it is. I suggest you read the book Combating Cult Mind control by Steven Hassan.
I have qualified my comments many times by saying "with all of the information that is available" in other videos. I just find it very hard to accept that a normal person with a healthy social life and normal relationships would even have any interest in this cult. If a person is well adjusted why would they even entertain a stress or personality test from a person on the street from a cult? I would think they would see a psychologist. I have read Hassan's book. Thanks for the comment.
that's the problem. Ask anyone who joined a cult (not born into one for obvious reasons) how they joined or why they joined the group. "I was on drugs" "I just broke up from my girlfriend" "I was at rock bottom" ...etc. They find out these problems and make them even worse than they are and offer them one way out: joining the group!
