we still hunt for meat and grow produce in my neck of TX. Heck I actually had to give some Deer and Boar away last season (both freezers full). Our family has a small (real small!) produce farm and market here too. I guess that's the bonus of not living in a large metro. Good video dude!
@furmountain21 Israel has collected over 150 Billion for their fake ass Holoco$t from the Germans and U.S. Tax Payers. This year the holojoke survivors will receive another 450 million, plus 2 new German Subs for israel. In 2003 israel received 118 Billion for American Tax Payers. To add, israel has attacked the USS Liberty, 9/11,Egypt and other nations. l passed out over 1500 dvds on Turkish khazars, israel,AIPAC,ADL,Black Slave Trade, communisn, zionisn, talmud, rothchilds, crimes against Palsestinians!
@ArmenianOzzy Keep on distributing your videos. Responsible for 911? Slave trade? Listen up fucker, you are and will amount to nothing in life. What a pathetic life you must lead. Your opinions and Conspiracy Theories mean nothing to me. By the way, for whatever it's worth have you considered learning how to spell? I might begin there. Fake Holocaust? Indeed...you are a typical "have-not" of society. Thus, you must blame someone. Israel isn't going anywhere. I suggest you deal with it.
@furmountain21 Take your excuses to Obama. Who created communisn asshole? Who created Zionism? Who attacked the USS Liberty? Who worte the Protocols of Elders? You Holocash was a joke. All l do is activism and research.l've gone to underground meetings,l've seen the proof, you aint got none. All you turks and zionist jews can't handle the truth, that's why you assholes are always pissed off at the world. Why does israel and the turks deny the genocides of 5 million Christian ppl? ATAJEWcom
@ArmenianOzzy I didn't vote for him. I'm a Right-Wing Radical...I'm not pissed off at the world. Keep on listening to these videos. I don't advocate big government. Go to all the underground meetings you like loser, because undeniably, in the end...that's what you are. "I ain't got none what?" Stalin was not a Jew. He was an atheist. Boo hoo woo chump.
@furmountain21 Obama is a asshole,he sold the Americans out, every race and color. This shit is beyond racism and a matter of survival. I don't blame you directly but l blame your ancestors. Not every jewish person is a loser but what is going on in israel is just another zionist genocide. It's zionist who are the main problem. Zionist control the sheep thru their media. Oh yes Stalin was a jew who had 3 jewish wives.Btw,l'm not a loser,l am a activist and don't attend anymore meetings.
We can't even live anymore because there are bureaucracies and fees for everything and bureaucratic rules for everything. Bureaucracy = BIG GOVERNMENT = what liberals actually admit that they want. All while playing themselves up as having all the answers and as much smarter than the rest of us.
very very well said. i have travelled circles who frequent these topics and everyone is saying the same thing. the time is not 4oclock, 5oclock, 2, etc....the time is now. we must sow the seeds for change in this generation and pass the knowledge to our youth, so they may live in a better world. don't tell me you love your kids then leave a world of crap for them to struggle in!!!
@formerutuber how do you know the pyramids were built on the back of slaves? as far as i know science has not proved that it was even possible. not saying your wrong , but its poissible we dont know the whole truth. but what he says in this video is great, a statement that should inspire us all! learn self sufficiency and be ready for anything!
@formerutuber thats not true , they discoveed the pyramids builders tombs around the pyramids itself and they were honored nearly as much as the pharaoh himself ,
thezeitgeistmovement is a bunch of bull shit, I've been to the talks and they are talking out the ass. Once the old guy (Jacque Fresco) dies Peter Joseph is going to capitlize on that bulll shit.
Absolutely, TVP and ZM is straight bullshit. They are just trying to capitalize on Florida swamp land. They have no clue about their "idea", only VERY loose crap aesthetic ideas about the future. No hard concepts whatsoever. And the funny thing is when fresco was asked where he got the idea he told some crap story when he was 12...LMAO!!! He never mentions he was a part of the technocracy organization. The original writers of such progressive ideas. Fresco just stole the idea and dumb it down
thezeitgeistmovement is a bunch of bull shit, I've been to the talks and they are talking out the ass. Once the old guy (Jacque Fresco) dies Peter Joseph is going to capitlize on that bulll shit.
The reason that we have civilization is to have a common goal and interest. Do you think we would have ever made steel if there was no industrialization due to the need of a country? No, what you would like is people still living in hobbles instead of having such things as youtube so people can say it would be better without. Civilization also allows for collective knowledge and schooling, let me remind you.
Civilization can move on without money, yes. But it is much harder. Money only has what value we give it, and the more of a certain currency there is, the less value we give it, hence 'inflation'. Money is simply a medium. A barter system is too innefective.
Say you want a haircut. You have three chickens. You offer the barber one. The barber doesn't want chickens. That's fine, you also have a loaf of bread. Barber doesn't want that either. What do you give them?
If it's so aweful then stop it. -No one- is forcing -anyone- to have the internet or even a computer. Most people in the world don't. It only serves to prove hyprocracy.
Well the fact of the matter is that, in the technologically developed Western nations, at least, people are required to adopt new technology to continue to be effective instruments of labor and therefore make a living. Consider the consequences of not using anything like phones, computers, public transit, etc. Without these, it would be very difficult to find a stable lifestyle in our society.
Uh-huh, and all I am seeing are BS excuses. There are plenty of places in the West where people can live a life without modern conveniences. You can do it in a big city, but there are entire communities like that, too. And even without that, you can go out and live in the wilderness.
The fact is that there is -no- logical excuse for an adult to complain about society while taking it's luxuries for granted.
Well I think we're both getting a little off-topic in that Proteanview's arguement isn't especially against technology but rather a society in which turns people into "children" who are "begging a government, a corporation, a leader, a system...". I think he is talking more about loss of individual control of our lives (in part due to technology) and the destruction of local autonomy in favor of a larger centralized "system".
I'd say we have more control over our lives than ever before, due mostly to technology, in fact. Without it, what choices do we have? Even without a strict feudal society that comes when the masses are uneducated due to lack of a printing press, and can't organize well without a messenger system at least, even better with telegrams, and better with phones or radios.
Even then! How many choices are there? Farmers and fishers, mostly. Some miners and woodsmen. That's for the masses, too.
I have to argue that we have less control over our lives in the modern day due to the same reasons that Proteanview mentions. Major decisions are increasingly falling to governments on a federal level, and our technology of mass communications, transit, and distribution (of foods, etc.) have developed to the point that they control our behavior. I don't disagree that things like phones and the internet increase our level of comfort, but together they create a system that we must conform to.
So technology changes society? Why yes, yes it does. I have yet to see how this is a -bad- thing. I didn't say they make life more comfortable; they make life -better-. Thanks to our increased level of communication, we are less racist, less sexist, less homophobic, less zenophobic, and all together more tolerant worldwide.
Also, who would you have decide these things? It's ineffective and irresponsible to let big things go to a vote.
That's not to say that I (or Proteanview, for that matter) would advocate not using this technology, but rather I would advocate a decentralization of its control. Local autonomy (that is, individuals having a genuine influence on the way their society runs, and not just politically) is what I believe Proteanview and I are arguing for above all, technology being indirectly involved by the fact that it has become an obstacle to this in some cases.
In other words, we can't "just stop it." There is, in fact, a societal "system" (mentioned by Proteanview) which forces us to conform to standards of behavior and the use of technology.
It is not necessary to go into debt to go to school. Work full time and go to night school, do not borrow in the first place.
It is completely feasible for people to drop out of our civilization but you will give up many benefits. And the greatest power any of us have in this civilization is how we spend our dollars.
The problem in our civilization today is marketing driven consumer slavery to corporations, it has little to do with government, society, or civilization.
yeah but we're slaves because we HAVE to spend our dollars on things like water and a living expenses and we're vulnerable to the billion dollar marketing/media industry which spends billions of dollars tracking our movements trying to predict our movements and patterns to sell to us later on.
to maintain a minimum standard of living in this society requires us to be working, making someone else rich.
Most posters here including the author of the video would not be alive if not for the medical technology civilization makes available to us. Our society has many many problems. We must work hard to solve or mediate these issues, but we should recognize that progress is not a wholly flawed idea, and our civilization is not a simple evil. Proteanview, you should start some grassroots organizations and get your community moving in the right direction!
Great job, you've figured out the "stunning concept" every vo-tech student and stoner had an epiphany about when he was sixteen. You keep on that. Those of us who are smarter than an ambulatory turnip will continue to get actual degrees and help further the technology you so easily take for granted.
Correct me if I'm misinformed, but I heard that schools are going to stop teaching phonics and start teaching word recognition. Could you imagine what kind of shit could be controlled by that?
Good ideas man, but look behind u. Nice expensive house u have there. Also willing to be that you are in or near a large city. When martial law comes, u will be screwed just like the ppl that you are trying to warn. Perhaps you should move 2 the sticks b4 Sept. when the World Health Organization takes over for mandatory Swine Flu vaccinations? Best of luck to us all.
what your saying may be true, but wouldn't the process now of how a factory or business of workers making cloths and building houses for mostly everyone be considered an incredible advancement in society and culture from everyone making only what they need for themselves to survive?
Before civilization we also had no vaccines or medical science, famines / starvation, and tribal warfare. Ah, the good old days. Too bad those god damn cell phones destroyed society....
we can not produce our own cars, planes, tv, computers, we can not go hunting around to get our own food because well, there almost 7 billion of potencial hunters. resources are limited and demand seems to grow every day, just saying :)
There were times when there wasn't need to travel far, fly, or connect with others across the ocean.
The more we've advanced, I guarantee you the more helpless we'll be once those resources bust. Notice how ppl go apeshit when they lose their Blackberry or iTunes. And those are just a bit of luxury.
some people can still do that.I responded with a vid that has NOTHING to to with this vid. But "hunter gathers" still exist.Just in case the economy crumbles.
True P, true, but there were leaders in those societies as well - they took from their subjects whatever they wanted (all that self-sufficiently grown food for instance). So some were always slaves and some were the masters - it only depends on the degree of slavery.
Yeah. Us anarchist know that there will be slave herders in a free society. We know because you tell us clearly that you will be. Do you really think you're going to convince anyone with a threat?
That's what you're really doing when you point out that there will still be bad guys. You're threatening people. Can't you tyrants stop with the fear and intimidation for one sentence?
In case you didn't take a history class yet, by mass wars, he was probably referring to wars where you kill millions and millions of people. There was was wars even before the nomadic people decided to settle down during 8000 B.C.E.
Without civilization, there wouldn't be any type of technology we have today. Yes there WAS a time when we can grow our own food, make our own clothes, etc. It was called Stone Age and we have grown to be past that because we have come to realize that there is no development as mankind as a whole when everyone is busy growing food and making their own stuff. A good example is the space program we have today.
Would we have landed on the moon when everyone minded their own business? Probably not.
what is the benefit of going to the moon? many tribal people throughout history have chosen suicide over civilized life because it is altogether unsatisfactory. they saw all of our shiny toys and "superior" technology but they also saw that it came at the price of a shitty life. and its still happening to this day amongst the tribal peoples of south america and africa.
Yes well you do not have any facts to back up your "tribal people" who have actually committed suicide instead of becomming civilized. Even if there were people who were doing this, they probably did so because they did not want to change their customs not because they have to "live the shitty life." If you think about it, civilized life is MUCH better than a "tribal life." If you disagree, feel free to shoot yourself.
As opposed to their non-shitty life of hunting, women plowing fields all day all day and having 15 kids in a row. Yeah they really were in heaven. We have it too good that we actually have time to fantasize how bad we have it. If you hate your job and think you have it bad, then change it.
you are mistaking third world peoples for tribal people.
third world peoples still live in civilization they are merely at the bottom rungs.
tribal peoples spend nearly a half as much time doing what we would call "work" because they pool their resources much more efficiently. they also keep their population much more stable then ours. any anthropologist will confirm this. any tribal people that we havent killed continue to live on (after thousands of years) because their system works.
Civilization didn't create technology. Civilization is an idea created by humans. Technology is physical products of ideas made by humans. Humans made technology. Humans made civilization.
Civilization does not equal technology. Technology does not equal good. Civilization mass produces technology. Technology would be explored whether the idea of civilization existed or not.
Technology is the enabler, not civilization.
These are just a few misconceptions of reality that I see in your speech.
My entire point was that civilization made it possible to create technology because of the fact that everyone had specialized jobs. Perhaps you should read the entire topic commentaries before you start your judgemental views on me or anyone else. Technology wouldn't have been this developed if we still ran around hunting or grew crops all the day long like in Stone Age or Feudalistic times.
You would still be a slave to your own needs if you had to make everything by your self.
You would have to work beyond 40 hours to end up with less. Specialization increases productivity and people end up with more.
If you couldn't trade where would you get the cotton or wool for clothes, the materials to build, and the various ingredients for food. To be completely self sufficient you would need many crops and animals and time invested.
it is true that one person alone would spend an excessive amount of time working to survive. however man evolved in a tribal setting and spent approximately 200,000 years living that way. any anthropologist will tell you that tribal peoples actually spend nearly half as much time "working" and therefore lead much more leisured lifestyles. the reason being that they support each other equally. in a capitalist system the poor majority is supporting the rich minority. the ultimate pyramid scheme.
Yet there would'nt be a need for a system based on capitalism and class. That its self is more of a burden in our world, because it is based on a cast system that dehumanizes certain people making their lives stressful. In the good ole days we tiled the land and worked harder but we were virtually stress free from coorparatocriese and governmental racism. at least for black people. That in itself is freedom. But that was then. Hopefully we will all get our freedom back.
What exactly in this is so not obvious tha you had to share it.
Also it wasn't some guy that wanted to rule the world with money. It was progress, from simple huts to trading and towns, trades, writing, counting, math, geometry, schools. Your pyramids were made in a system that's not any much different from the one we have now.
You have a very simple minded way of looking on the world. Even if you think you see the "real ultimate truth" you don't, and you can't see past your mind box.
We used to die by age 20 too, dufus, we used think God sent floods and sickness cause we didn't have the right color beads.
We have mass production now, we don't have to grow our own food -- or your dumb ass would be knitting a sweater instead of being on Youtube trying to impress women dumb enough to fall for your crap.
I think there are a lot of people who still can do all of these things and still live in civilization. Maybe not in NYC but where I live there are (e/s Houston). Ive sewn, gardened, raised bees. canned food, raised food animals, as well a worked for a corporation for 30 years. I can Plumb, seawt copper, operate any hand tool and large equipment as well. Lots of people could become self suffiecient very quickly if needed, I believe. Must be a generational thing.
i'm 26 and i can take care of myself. i'm an electrical engineer with more skills than i can possibly list or remember off hand.
if tomorrow was the collapse of our civilization i know that i could provide for my family because i was taught how to do this but whats more important is that i was taught how to figure out the answers to my own problems.
Hmm , ok do you know how to add nitrogen to the soil so it can be fertile when you have no commerical fertilizer? How about how to tassle corn? Can you pour lead? YOU may indeed have had some REAL survival shills taught to you (specially since you are from Houston LOL) but according to this video it seems many have not. I was just wondering why this lack of skills seems to be prevalent among the younger peeps. Urbanism is a big part sowhat Protean calls civilization is actually urbanization
LOL that is why farm families had many many children, they needed the extra labor. A friend of mine's grandfather had 32 kids.... He had a large farm. Farming is work from before dawn until late at night EVERYDAY.
very true. we've been systematically weaned off of self-sufficiency and taught to try to get help from society, the Government, or "The Collective" for the things we require. Individuality and independence are becoming forgotten values and now society is taking a nosedive because of it.
Earth is a slave planet. Man has enslaved the mind to concentrate the labors of humanity to selfish ends. Mankind worships the law of the father and enforces this on its ignorant children. The law of man is a religion. A religion of greed and in-equality. Enslave the mind and there is no need to police the body.
Manipulative? Oppressive? Luciferian?
Yes
Yet the truth still shines for those who have standing.
Draw a line in your soul that you will never cross and you will see the truth.
The Anarcho-Primitivists are pretty extreme in their conclusions, but many of their critiques of civilization are right on target.
I don't think we need to go back to a pre-verbal stage of development or the Stone Age, as some Primitivists suggest.
But there is a lot to be said for going back to the stage in which implements are tools and not machines. The former is controlled by us and we determine their uses. The latter shapes our behavior.
Noblism is the idea that you are the only one that matters and that everyone else is your enemy. The thing about this is that it keeps most enslaved to Noblists at the top. It is the ideology that drives this world.
Working people everywhere are slaves to this system. Oh, you could quit your job, but you'll be cast out into the cold night.
Do you people want freedom? The only way is to create an abundance of resources and build our technological base so that machines do our jobs.
Exactly!!!! Just watch the news. We are all on our way to a police state and the future is looking grim. We must open our eyes and our minds to find what the mind and body is truely capable of. It is an enlightening process. Great Vid!!!
I agree a society will always be on the brink of starvation if we follow this man's logic. It's obvious that he's never studied economics or he wouldn't be saying such ignorant statements. Though I'm not against learning how to farm, hunt, and teaching one's child at home - I am in fact home schooled - but that doesn't mean that money is/should be worthless with out it a society wouldn't be able to go farther than the primitive level.
Not to mention that Modern Society has made us weaker as a species. Thanks to advanced anti-biotics and hand sanitizers, our immune systems are growing weaker and weaker, and our muscles and bones are getting weaker and weaker. Worst of all, our MINDS are getting weaker.
You are only a "slave" if you choose to allow yourself to be. Stop your senseless complaining about society and get off your AZZ and do something with your life.
He is trying to do something, trying to enlighten the rest of you morons. You don't understand that this is not a problem that can be solved by one person, it will take the collaborative efforts of all humans across this planet we call Earth to free ourselves from this mental slavery and physical dependence of the ruling class.
As you can obviously see, he's not recording out in the street somewhere in an alley or something, he has a home so he must be "doing something with his life."
Regardless of where he may reside, he is very obviously playing the the victim card. If he truely feels as though the barriers are too high and that he is a slave then one might suggest that moves. There are billions of ppl in third world countries that would trade places with him. Then he can live the life of a peasant as he so yearns for.
bro, we can still do all of those things it just depends on how much you wanna work to get it.. yea our "society" may have problems but its up to you to stop wasting time worrying about the corporations and the government that we have no control of and do what you have to do to be successful in your own life... i'm just sayin
So in other words lets all be ignorant and pretent everything is normal and work to be successful in our own bubble whilst children are being exploited raped, child prostitution, 11 year old girls have to sleep with 10 men just to put food in her stomach, lets ignore all the exploitation in the world and try and be Successful in our own little world
interesting comments ,and i'd love to go devo as much as the next guy, but your remarks about the pyramids are just warped and historically innaccurate.
The more you know the less you need, people like us who know more we dont need to be slaves to materalism and consumerism, I dont buy expensive clothes I make my own
Very interesting thoughts, and they are true to an extent. Force a person to be independent, and they will probably die within days.
Humans have always been social creatures, so it is pretty understandable that we grow a dependence on others. Whether it be dependence on our bosses or peers etc, we stay alive by dependence.
Like specialization , it is much more efficient if people focus on one thing, rather than spreading their skills. Thus we get different jobs and different classes.
Brainwashed debt slaves living in socially created fear .. that is the reality of this "modern world" .. but there is even a worse reality .. that we are slaves of nature and evolution .. mindless pain of all the animals (and ppl too)in the name of nothing.
I wouldn't call it slaves to civilization, but what you're talking about is slaves to the government. You can be civilized and be free, but I definately get your point. Money is not the problem, the problem is WHO is controlling the money. Money is nothing more than a medium of exchange which would take on various forms civilized or not. But again I get your point.
Again, you've expressed a sentiment that's probably at the back of most people's minds but few are able to articulate so concisely. Thought provoking as always.
I have to ask is it as diabolical as you think? I do not disagree with you, But it's this " The Man" in the the big leather chair stroking his cat coming up with these ideas on how to control the word populous that i don't necessarily agree with. Maybe I'm wrong wouldn't be the first time.
Pyramids were built with slavery, let's not disregard the progress "civilization" has brought us as well.
Sure, we could "grow our own food" and "make our own clothes", but that took pretty much all the time of our lives, and we lived drastically shorter lives because of it. Life was also a lot more boring back then as well. You know, you can still live that lifestyle as well, you don't have to reap the benefits of civilisation if you don't want to.
I'm not talking the "Jewish slaves" from the bible, for which I agree probably didn't exist. The Egyptians (like most other civilisations in the area) had the equivalent of peasants or surfs, which are basically just slaves. Plus, I bet if I look hard enough, I'll see they did have institutionalised slavery, like the Greeks. Plus, these civilisations had schools anyway....
Keep the internet free from 'civilized' control and we may be able to break free of this tyranny that enfolds us.
There are no chains to break. These bonds are psychological and have been developed through cultural manipulation rooted in millenniums past.
We the people of this little planet need to understand that it is our life to live. It is owed to know one. No one has claim over your life or how you live it.
Be wary of anyone claiming to 'know' how you should live your life.
Paradoxally slavery happened in a time when we sew our own clothing, grow our own food, hunt for our own food, build our own shelter, and slavery tends to disapear now that we trust people who we pay for that.
Not sure if I would want to return to that lifestyle, especially considering my love for music related technology and the need for manufacturing in that field, but the option for such a lifestyle here in the states would be nice. At the very least, we need to vastly downsize the unconscionable wealth machine--the human meat grinder--that controls our civilization.
we live in a profit based economy, therefore nothing is and never will be remotley sustainable or efficient. things are designed to fail repeatedly, or be updated frequently. Truth is a resource based economy in which everything is automated is technologically possible, and would afford everyone equal access to everything without the need to submitted to a life a endless "work"
And as a woman, I'll remind Protean View that childbirth is a lot more dangerous for those outside the protections afforded by civilization. Women used to die giving life, you know.
Fine for you to look back romantically on our pre-civilized past. You wouldn't be the one to have to give birth in some dank hut with dirty-handed folks trying to pull your breech baby out of your... Again, you get the picture.
Yes, we were producers not consumers, but what the average man produced was most always purely utilitarian, minimal. It took all of one's time to feed and clothe one's children, when one could. If something went wrong, no second chances.
And now, I'll paraphrase the brilliant art scholar, Kenneth Clark:
People who say they prefer barbarism to civilization haven't given it sufficient trial -
discomfort, privation, very restricted company, no books, no light after dark, no hope.
Oh, and before anyone gets all up in arms about the word "barbarism," it is Clark's not mine.
He was refering to the actual barbarians who had crushed what was left of Rome and then settled down to a simple, semi-agricultural life among its ruins.
But the analogy fits, as he was writing about the point in their development (after the chaos and destruction) that resembled those we can occassionaly see in the places cited in the video.
God made childbirth natural, people in the Amazon have healthy babies not with the medicine and "modern technology" All the doctors today have a cut because the pharmactual industry is a billion euro industry and will give you poison so you are dependant on their medication. they have cures for aids but they will not manufacture the medication because the drug business would go bancrupt. its all about the euros
2a. ...But this slavery is of the kind that says we are slaves to oxygen, or slaves to sleep, etc. I find the trick is to keep from falling for the trick of the marketers. Do you really need that stuff that you don't need? We are coming to the end of a consumerist phase of a big economic bubble. Government is trying to hold it aloft with our money, and many are closing their eyes, hoping against hope that the powers that be, really are holding power, and know what they're doing. They don't...
1a. I think there is a sense of it that is true, so that it becomes impossible to survive outside of civilization. Even if we kept those skills you speak of, the size of population wouldn't survive on those skills in the given geographic area because the system pulls more from the area, and makes survival for larger numbers possible, than would be possible otherwise. Sudden collapse of the system would cause wide spread starvation and fighting for survival...
We can still do all of those things (make our own clothing, feed ourselves, build our own shelter, etc)... it's just that there is a lot more red taped involved and it's a lot less practical. I prefer civilization to the alternative, thats for sure.
Have humans ever really been *free* from civilization? We are social animals after all, so in a way, no matter how little contact one might have with others or an administration of any sort, he/she is still a slave of civilization as long as even the most primitive culture exists, and we are not slaves to instincts alone.
TAKENname..i think the title 'slaves to money' would have been better. we do live and have always lived in a community and that does come with certain duties. builders, protectors and so on. But the individual chooses his/her own role based on what they want to do and the rest of the time are free to do as they please. our pursuit of money and stuff is how we enslave ourselves. without our greed no government could enslave us. they are simply filling the hole we are digging. someones got to
Yea yea. An odd person here and there can overcome greed or is not prone to it. But the vast majority of humankind seems very much greedy. Isn't it somewhat of a basic element in the human emotional palette? If we all took a pill right now that would eliminate greed, what do you think would happen?
A paleo-anthropoligist friend of mine claims that greed, for the most part, has been encoded into the human gene.
He says that those early men were far more likely to survive who were interested in trade, in acquiring goods from remote places. These tribes would have the most diverse resources, develop the best tools and sharpen their minds.
After a while, tribes who were not avaricious couldn't compete anymore and were swept aside.
My friend himself is not the least greedy, though.
no greed.... well we would not surpress free energy technology because others are more profitable. we wouldnt live such a lazy obese lifestyle. we would live in a healthy happy self suficient society exploring new horizons in peace each and every day. I guess. what do you think would happen?
EyeLean5280 gave a good comment, greed is encoded to our genes from the beginning. So, you just claim that only these marvelous things would happen if only we didn't have greed?
I think humans are emotionally too complex to just remove an ingrained feeling. Besides, even without greed we would still have AGGRESSION, the MOST human thing if there ever was one, and the cause of many-a wars.
To remove negative feelings sounds more like a lobotomy! All feelings have their pluses and minuses.
Negative feelings is how we enforce the experience of the positive ones.
The real problem I think, is personality disorders (more commonly subclinical psychopathy, malignant narcissism etc.) They can't help but to be selfish, lacking empathy. If we could cure those... Maybe then the world would be a bit more balanced.
we still hunt for meat and grow produce in my neck of TX. Heck I actually had to give some Deer and Boar away last season (both freezers full). Our family has a small (real small!) produce farm and market here too. I guess that's the bonus of not living in a large metro. Good video dude!

The reason that we have civilization is to have a common goal and interest. Do you think we would have ever made steel if there was no industrialization due to the need of a country? No, what you would like is people still living in hobbles instead of having such things as youtube so people can say it would be better without. Civilization also allows for collective knowledge and schooling, let me remind you.
metalwreck450 2 years ago
I think the main thing to look at is that there's a reason our ancestors decided to move on from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle: Because that sucks.
Altanese 2 years ago
Civilization can move on without money, yes. But it is much harder. Money only has what value we give it, and the more of a certain currency there is, the less value we give it, hence 'inflation'. Money is simply a medium. A barter system is too innefective.
Say you want a haircut. You have three chickens. You offer the barber one. The barber doesn't want chickens. That's fine, you also have a loaf of bread. Barber doesn't want that either. What do you give them?

Altanese 2 years ago
...Which actually helps to prove their point; they are slaves to a system which requires them to have computers, etc.
deutchesreich 2 years ago
If it's so aweful then stop it. -No one- is forcing -anyone- to have the internet or even a computer. Most people in the world don't. It only serves to prove hyprocracy.
Altanese 2 years ago
Well the fact of the matter is that, in the technologically developed Western nations, at least, people are required to adopt new technology to continue to be effective instruments of labor and therefore make a living. Consider the consequences of not using anything like phones, computers, public transit, etc. Without these, it would be very difficult to find a stable lifestyle in our society.
deutchesreich 2 years ago
Uh-huh, and all I am seeing are BS excuses. There are plenty of places in the West where people can live a life without modern conveniences. You can do it in a big city, but there are entire communities like that, too. And even without that, you can go out and live in the wilderness.
The fact is that there is -no- logical excuse for an adult to complain about society while taking it's luxuries for granted.
Altanese 2 years ago
Well I think we're both getting a little off-topic in that Proteanview's arguement isn't especially against technology but rather a society in which turns people into "children" who are "begging a government, a corporation, a leader, a system...". I think he is talking more about loss of individual control of our lives (in part due to technology) and the destruction of local autonomy in favor of a larger centralized "system".
deutchesreich 2 years ago
I'd say we have more control over our lives than ever before, due mostly to technology, in fact. Without it, what choices do we have? Even without a strict feudal society that comes when the masses are uneducated due to lack of a printing press, and can't organize well without a messenger system at least, even better with telegrams, and better with phones or radios.
Even then! How many choices are there? Farmers and fishers, mostly. Some miners and woodsmen. That's for the masses, too.
Altanese 2 years ago
I have to argue that we have less control over our lives in the modern day due to the same reasons that Proteanview mentions. Major decisions are increasingly falling to governments on a federal level, and our technology of mass communications, transit, and distribution (of foods, etc.) have developed to the point that they control our behavior. I don't disagree that things like phones and the internet increase our level of comfort, but together they create a system that we must conform to.
deutchesreich 2 years ago
So technology changes society? Why yes, yes it does. I have yet to see how this is a -bad- thing. I didn't say they make life more comfortable; they make life -better-. Thanks to our increased level of communication, we are less racist, less sexist, less homophobic, less zenophobic, and all together more tolerant worldwide.
Also, who would you have decide these things? It's ineffective and irresponsible to let big things go to a vote.
Altanese 2 years ago
That's not to say that I (or Proteanview, for that matter) would advocate not using this technology, but rather I would advocate a decentralization of its control. Local autonomy (that is, individuals having a genuine influence on the way their society runs, and not just politically) is what I believe Proteanview and I are arguing for above all, technology being indirectly involved by the fact that it has become an obstacle to this in some cases.
deutchesreich 2 years ago
In other words, we can't "just stop it." There is, in fact, a societal "system" (mentioned by Proteanview) which forces us to conform to standards of behavior and the use of technology.
deutchesreich 2 years ago

It is not necessary to go into debt to go to school. Work full time and go to night school, do not borrow in the first place.
It is completely feasible for people to drop out of our civilization but you will give up many benefits. And the greatest power any of us have in this civilization is how we spend our dollars.
The problem in our civilization today is marketing driven consumer slavery to corporations, it has little to do with government, society, or civilization.
chaogenus 2 years ago
yeah but we're slaves because we HAVE to spend our dollars on things like water and a living expenses and we're vulnerable to the billion dollar marketing/media industry which spends billions of dollars tracking our movements trying to predict our movements and patterns to sell to us later on.

Probably not.
alsdjflaksjghalklaks 2 years ago
what is the benefit of going to the moon? many tribal people throughout history have chosen suicide over civilized life because it is altogether unsatisfactory. they saw all of our shiny toys and "superior" technology but they also saw that it came at the price of a shitty life. and its still happening to this day amongst the tribal peoples of south america and africa.
vibrantlight1103 2 years ago
Yes well you do not have any facts to back up your "tribal people" who have actually committed suicide instead of becomming civilized. Even if there were people who were doing this, they probably did so because they did not want to change their customs not because they have to "live the shitty life." If you think about it, civilized life is MUCH better than a "tribal life." If you disagree, feel free to shoot yourself.
alsdjflaksjghalklaks 2 years ago
As opposed to their non-shitty life of hunting, women plowing fields all day all day and having 15 kids in a row. Yeah they really were in heaven. We have it too good that we actually have time to fantasize how bad we have it. If you hate your job and think you have it bad, then change it.
grumpone 2 years ago
you are mistaking third world peoples for tribal people.
third world peoples still live in civilization they are merely at the bottom rungs.
tribal peoples spend nearly a half as much time doing what we would call "work" because they pool their resources much more efficiently. they also keep their population much more stable then ours. any anthropologist will confirm this. any tribal people that we havent killed continue to live on (after thousands of years) because their system works.
vibrantlight1103 2 years ago
Civilization didn't create technology. Civilization is an idea created by humans. Technology is physical products of ideas made by humans. Humans made technology. Humans made civilization.
Civilization does not equal technology. Technology does not equal good. Civilization mass produces technology. Technology would be explored whether the idea of civilization existed or not.
Technology is the enabler, not civilization.
These are just a few misconceptions of reality that I see in your speech.
ashanyako 2 years ago
My entire point was that civilization made it possible to create technology because of the fact that everyone had specialized jobs. Perhaps you should read the entire topic commentaries before you start your judgemental views on me or anyone else. Technology wouldn't have been this developed if we still ran around hunting or grew crops all the day long like in Stone Age or Feudalistic times.
alsdjflaksjghalklaks 2 years ago
I like what your 'just saying' :)
MissAnthropic66 2 years ago
You would still be a slave to your own needs if you had to make everything by your self.
You would have to work beyond 40 hours to end up with less. Specialization increases productivity and people end up with more.
If you couldn't trade where would you get the cotton or wool for clothes, the materials to build, and the various ingredients for food. To be completely self sufficient you would need many crops and animals and time invested.
In the end you are always a slave to something.
lambedan 2 years ago
it is true that one person alone would spend an excessive amount of time working to survive. however man evolved in a tribal setting and spent approximately 200,000 years living that way. any anthropologist will tell you that tribal peoples actually spend nearly half as much time "working" and therefore lead much more leisured lifestyles. the reason being that they support each other equally. in a capitalist system the poor majority is supporting the rich minority. the ultimate pyramid scheme.
vibrantlight1103 2 years ago
Yet there would'nt be a need for a system based on capitalism and class. That its self is more of a burden in our world, because it is based on a cast system that dehumanizes certain people making their lives stressful. In the good ole days we tiled the land and worked harder but we were virtually stress free from coorparatocriese and governmental racism. at least for black people. That in itself is freedom. But that was then. Hopefully we will all get our freedom back.

Also it wasn't some guy that wanted to rule the world with money. It was progress, from simple huts to trading and towns, trades, writing, counting, math, geometry, schools. Your pyramids were made in a system that's not any much different from the one we have now.

TiradeFaction 2 years ago
Um..no the pyramids were not built by slavery. What, is the last relevant book on Egypt you read published in the seventies, or the bible?
Edgeof666 2 years ago

Bringing civilization to those savages extincted them.

Paradoxally slavery happened in a time when we sew our own clothing, grow our own food, hunt for our own food, build our own shelter, and slavery tends to disapear now that we trust people who we pay for that.

Times were simple...

All great points.
But.
How, exactly, do pre-civilized people have control over the systems that run their lives?
Their lives are run by ecosystems. The terrain, the foragable food, the local predators, microbes... You get the picture.
And I'm not sure I'd trade toilets for clothes I'd woven and sewn myself. Very few would, I'd venture to say.
EyeLean5280 2 years ago
And as a woman, I'll remind Protean View that childbirth is a lot more dangerous for those outside the protections afforded by civilization. Women used to die giving life, you know.
Fine for you to look back romantically on our pre-civilized past. You wouldn't be the one to have to give birth in some dank hut with dirty-handed folks trying to pull your breech baby out of your... Again, you get the picture.
EyeLean5280 2 years ago
Yes, we were producers not consumers, but what the average man produced was most always purely utilitarian, minimal. It took all of one's time to feed and clothe one's children, when one could. If something went wrong, no second chances.
And now, I'll paraphrase the brilliant art scholar, Kenneth Clark:
People who say they prefer barbarism to civilization haven't given it sufficient trial -
discomfort, privation, very restricted company, no books, no light after dark, no hope.
EyeLean5280 2 years ago
I'm just sayin'.
EyeLean5280 2 years ago

RichardRoy2 2 years ago
RichardRoy2 2 years ago
We can still do all of those things (make our own clothing, feed ourselves, build our own shelter, etc)... it's just that there is a lot more red taped involved and it's a lot less practical. I prefer civilization to the alternative, thats for sure.

im right on it man.. i know exactly what you are talking about.

Have humans ever really been *free* from civilization? We are social animals after all, so in a way, no matter how little contact one might have with others or an administration of any sort, he/she is still a slave of civilization as long as even the most primitive culture exists, and we are not slaves to instincts alone.
TAKENnameARGH 2 years ago
TAKENname..i think the title 'slaves to money' would have been better. we do live and have always lived in a community and that does come with certain duties. builders, protectors and so on. But the individual chooses his/her own role based on what they want to do and the rest of the time are free to do as they please. our pursuit of money and stuff is how we enslave ourselves. without our greed no government could enslave us. they are simply filling the hole we are digging. someones got to
lookElike 2 years ago
Yea yea. An odd person here and there can overcome greed or is not prone to it. But the vast majority of humankind seems very much greedy. Isn't it somewhat of a basic element in the human emotional palette? If we all took a pill right now that would eliminate greed, what do you think would happen?
TAKENnameARGH 2 years ago
A paleo-anthropoligist friend of mine claims that greed, for the most part, has been encoded into the human gene.
He says that those early men were far more likely to survive who were interested in trade, in acquiring goods from remote places. These tribes would have the most diverse resources, develop the best tools and sharpen their minds.
After a while, tribes who were not avaricious couldn't compete anymore and were swept aside.
My friend himself is not the least greedy, though.
EyeLean5280 2 years ago
no greed.... well we would not surpress free energy technology because others are more profitable. we wouldnt live such a lazy obese lifestyle. we would live in a healthy happy self suficient society exploring new horizons in peace each and every day. I guess. what do you think would happen?
lookElike 2 years ago
EyeLean5280 gave a good comment, greed is encoded to our genes from the beginning. So, you just claim that only these marvelous things would happen if only we didn't have greed?
I think humans are emotionally too complex to just remove an ingrained feeling. Besides, even without greed we would still have AGGRESSION, the MOST human thing if there ever was one, and the cause of many-a wars.
To remove negative feelings sounds more like a lobotomy! All feelings have their pluses and minuses.
TAKENnameARGH 2 years ago
Negative feelings is how we enforce the experience of the positive ones.
The real problem I think, is personality disorders (more commonly subclinical psychopathy, malignant narcissism etc.) They can't help but to be selfish, lacking empathy. If we could cure those... Maybe then the world would be a bit more balanced.
