Nicely done, Claude Rains was brilliant, a favorite of mine for many many years. If anyone gets a chance to see him at his best, look for the movie Deception with Bette Davis. It's a classic!!!!!
A great actor... But why didn't you use pictures of him in Notorious or Mr. Smith goes to Washington ? Anyway, it's good to see that actors of his level aren't forgotten.
Totally untrained as an actor. Worked in the theater, literally, to support his family from the time he was 11. Worked his way up in the theater, absorbing everything, eventually getting bit parts, then bigger, winding up as an instructor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art -- where he taught, among others, Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir John Gielgud. Could've been the greatest stage actor ever if he wanted, but was, to me, the greatest character ever in film. Perfect!
The greatest character who ever lived and, arguably, among the 10 greatest actors of all time. Doesn't get half the respect he so richly deserves. A perfect actor!
Everything I see him in, makes me like him even more!
I first saw him in the 1943 Phantom of the Opera (Best Phantom ever as far as I am concerned). Then Wolfman and Invisible Man at about the same time. Kept watching others including Mr Smith Goes To Washington and Robin Hood
truly one of the greatest, most underrated and forgotten actors ever! he could be funny as hell, serious or just greasy and evil. his presence is welcome in every picture he made. from universal horror movies to casablanca and robin hood. he played every character to the hilt, and with great subtext. truly an actors actor!
Superb actor CLAUDE RAINS from the golden age of hollywood. every day supreme actor, we see em do anything but catch him in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 1943. the chandelier scene & acid scenes alone will stun the human senses. thanks Claude. They dont make em like you anymore. TOMKES horror film historian ill be back
as horror film historian and biggest fan of PHANTOM 1943 let me join in, the music here is TERRIBLE. He deserves better. RAINS superb in his films but PHANTOM is his best the chandelier &acid scenes are UNFORGETTABLE. I knew 1000 character actors over 45 yrs time. i did interviews. i love these old horror gems or any classic film. i like to get feedback. CLAUDE RAINS WILL ENDURE as his films will. Supreme and superior actor. TOMK a man who knows his classic films
I'm 14 and I fell in love with him a month ago. before that, I had seen him in Phantom of the Opera and noticed his great acting.
Then I saw the Invisible Man and I realized what a stud he was! He was so sexy when he did the Invisible Man with his voice and everything. He was so cute when he got mad :) and he was just plain handsome. However, I wish I could have seen him when he was in the silent film Build Thy House. he was probably a god back then....
His Erique is beautiful! I love his preformance as the Phantom. If you like him in Phantom, you should see him in "The Unsuspected"; he's devilishly sexy in that film! I wanted to jump in my TV and have my wicked way with him on the carpet. XD
Yeah, Claude Rains' family came to live here in the 1960's. He's my fav. actor. But, although he is the worlds best actor, the best phantom was Lon Chaney because of his face!
His voice was great and he had a talent for "acting with his eyes" and expresseshis feelings in them, a prime example is Notorious (leslie04film posted a copy of it for refrence)
His performance in Lawrence of Arabia was brilliant. He isn't in the film very much at all, only where Lawrence is at HQ, but his performance -if you concentrate on him-is an understated and elegant turn. Great actor. If living today and free of the Warner Bros. persona (mixed blessing, that) he could be as deft as any of our current talent.
Lawrence of Arabia is based (many would say loosely) on the experiences of T.E. Lawrence. He was in life a complex man, strange. In the film he is a complex character, played by Peter O'Toole. Claude Rains has only a few lines in a long film. But it is an excellent film, and O'toole is wonderful. Watch it when you have 3-4 hours to spare, a rainy day perhaps.
Thans a lot alliewolfgal for this wonderful tribute to such a great actor. I got interested in Claude Rains' talents through your clip. I am currently reading the book 'The Invisible Man' with my students and I would like to buy the movie on DVD.
I wish someone would post a clip or two from Mr. Skeffington as I think he was marvellous in that film... I agree, he was an actor's actor and totally undervalued today.
I watched the whole of THE INVISIBLE MAN the other day! WOW! How amazing can you get, the special effects were one thing but Claude was FANTASTIC!!! A great screen debut for him
Thank you so much...he was and even in death is one of the greatest actors American or otherwise...thanks again for giving him the credit he so richly deserves and hopefully introducing a number of new generations to his work...thx again!
Let it not be said that Claude Rains avoided ambiguous parts in less than stellar movies. With some roles that still reflect the power of a consummate actor - Rains first among peers with that hallowed title - Claude starred in Irwin Allen's the original "The Lost World" (1960) as Professor George Edward Challenger. The film bombed, but take a look at the vhs and see for yourself what an actor's actor is all about.
You're right that there isn't much on YouTube about Claude Rains, but if you really wanted to do him tribute, shouldn't you have spelled his name right on the video? (Rains not Raines)
You might have noticed I spelled his name correctly on the title and in the little speal about my video. I did spell his name correctly in my other version of this video but uploaded the wrong one, with all of the misspellings in it.
Claude Rains, a 1920's to 1970's actor, who was in those movies you saw in my video and many more, like "The Adventures of Robin Hood." and a few Alfred Hitchcock episodes. ect... you can check out IMDB the movie database to see other movies he was in. Also on another note he is a really good actor with a powerful voice that commands attention.
He was fantastic in The Invisible Man.
