  • He was fantastic in The Invisible Man.

  • I'm 14, fell in love with this man's acting skills at age 7. Best actor I have ever watched.

  • Nicely done, Claude Rains was brilliant, a favorite of mine for many many years. If anyone gets a chance to see him at his best, look for the movie Deception with Bette Davis. It's a classic!!!!!

  • A great actor... But why didn't you use pictures of him in Notorious or Mr. Smith goes to Washington ? Anyway, it's good to see that actors of his level aren't forgotten.

  • Totally untrained as an actor. Worked in the theater, literally, to support his family from the time he was 11. Worked his way up in the theater, absorbing everything, eventually getting bit parts, then bigger, winding up as an instructor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art -- where he taught, among others, Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir John Gielgud. Could've been the greatest stage actor ever if he wanted, but was, to me, the greatest character ever in film. Perfect!

  • WONDERFUL ACTOR....and one of my favorite songs. Thank you!

  • The greatest character who ever lived and, arguably, among the 10 greatest actors of all time. Doesn't get half the respect he so richly deserves. A perfect actor!

  • To think: This is the man that taught Olivier to act!

  • great clip love this actor

  • Best actor ever!

Everything I see him in, makes me like him even more!

I first saw him in the 1943 Phantom of the Opera (Best Phantom ever as far as I am concerned). Then Wolfman and Invisible Man at about the same time. Kept watching others including Mr Smith Goes To Washington and Robin Hood

  • Thanks for making. Great actor, with a really great voice. His bible recordings are very good.

  • ahhhh yes to be in the presence of greatness.........thank you.

  • Don't forget he was in "Mr.Smith Goes to Washington," too!

  • Claude Rains was marvellous - but Coldplay!? He deserves better than that.

  • truly one of the greatest, most underrated and forgotten actors ever! he could be funny as hell, serious or just greasy and evil. his presence is welcome in every picture he made. from universal horror movies to casablanca and robin hood. he played every character to the hilt, and with great subtext. truly an actors actor!

  • Superb actor CLAUDE RAINS from the golden age of hollywood. every day supreme actor, we see em do anything but catch him in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 1943. the chandelier scene & acid scenes alone will stun the human senses. thanks Claude. They dont make em like you anymore. TOMKES horror film historian ill be back

  • Un actor. Un hombre.

  • as horror film historian and biggest fan of PHANTOM 1943 let me join in, the music here is TERRIBLE. He deserves better. RAINS superb in his films but PHANTOM is his best the chandelier &acid scenes are UNFORGETTABLE. I knew 1000 character actors over 45 yrs time. i did interviews. i love these old horror gems or any classic film. i like to get feedback. CLAUDE RAINS WILL ENDURE as his films will. Supreme and superior actor. TOMK a man who knows his classic films

  • wonderful actor

  • Put up some beautuil music instead, please. A beautiful man deserves classical music!

  • First of all, spell his name right! It's RAINS, not RAINES.

    Second, lose the terrible music!

  • sorry, this crappy modern music doesn't match this video.

  • 27 and I love Claude Rains; I fell in love with him when I was 15.

  • I was around 5 when I first saw him in casablanca and Robin hood.

  • Great films! I could swear I've seen him earlier than 15. Most likely in "Robin Hood" and "Invisible Man", but didn't learn his name until 15. :)

  • @alliewolfgal Great films. I recommend COME HERE, MR. JORDON (1941), THE WOLF MAN (1941), and MR. SKEFFINGTON (1944), too.

  • I'm 14 and I fell in love with him a month ago. before that, I had seen him in Phantom of the Opera and noticed his great acting.

Then I saw the Invisible Man and I realized what a stud he was! He was so sexy when he did the Invisible Man with his voice and everything. He was so cute when he got mad :) and he was just plain handsome. However, I wish I could have seen him when he was in the silent film Build Thy House. he was probably a god back then....

  • His Erique is beautiful! I love his preformance as the Phantom. If you like him in Phantom, you should see him in "The Unsuspected"; he's devilishly sexy in that film! I wanted to jump in my TV and have my wicked way with him on the carpet. XD

  • @escottish140 I was 10 when I first discovered him; I'm having a Rains Renaissance at age 37.

  • a great leading actor and a great supporting actor.

  • so very true.

  • Yeah, Claude Rains' family came to live here in the 1960's. He's my fav. actor. But, although he is the worlds best actor, the best phantom was Lon Chaney because of his face!

  • Claude Rains had such a great voice: raspy and venomous, yet sweet and kind.

  • yes that and much more, the perfect person to play the phantom of the opera and the invisible man!

  • His voice was great and he had a talent for "acting with his eyes" and expresseshis feelings in them, a prime example is Notorious (leslie04film posted a copy of it for refrence)

  • One class act he was -

  • yes indeed.

  • He's my favorite Phantom next to Crawford

  • yes he is so hypnotic!

  • Thank you so much for this video. He's one of my all-time favorite actors.

  • really, he one of mine too. :)

  • The Rains family lives on here in australia

  • In Austraila, really?

  • His performance in Lawrence of Arabia was brilliant. He isn't in the film very much at all, only where Lawrence is at HQ, but his performance -if you concentrate on him-is an understated and elegant turn. Great actor. If living today and free of the Warner Bros. persona (mixed blessing, that) he could be as deft as any of our current talent.

  • I do concur, even in the smallest of roles he plays them larger than life.

  • Lawrence of Arabia is based (many would say loosely) on the experiences of T.E. Lawrence. He was in life a complex man, strange. In the film he is a complex character, played by Peter O'Toole. Claude Rains has only a few lines in a long film. But it is an excellent film, and O'toole is wonderful. Watch it when you have 3-4 hours to spare, a rainy day perhaps.

  • cool, I have it, I have sadly only seen some of it and hope to watch more :D

  • he's also great in saturdays children and they made me a criminal.

  • One of my favorite actors....and my favorite Coldplay song!

  • yay! good collaboration.

  • Thans a lot alliewolfgal for this wonderful tribute to such a great actor. I got interested in Claude Rains' talents through your clip. I am currently reading the book 'The Invisible Man' with my students and I would like to buy the movie on DVD.

  • I wish someone would post a clip or two from Mr. Skeffington as I think he was marvellous in that film... I agree, he was an actor's actor and totally undervalued today.

  • most definatly. I also wish that more clips from Mr. Skeffington were up here. Oh well. Hope you enjoyed the tribute.

  • What is the music called?

  • speed of soind, by coldplay.

  • Thanks.

  • sure thing.

  • That's a great film. He and the wonderful Bette Davis, who were also good together in "Now Voyager."

  • never saw that one, what is it about?

  • Very nicely done! I like his movies the ones I've seen anyways.

  • oh, which one?

  • I watched the whole of THE INVISIBLE MAN the other day! WOW! How amazing can you get, the special effects were one thing but Claude was FANTASTIC!!! A great screen debut for him

  • An excellent tribute to a man who truly deserved it, Well done and of course well done Claude for being so GREAT

  • indeed. :)

  • Thank you so much...he was and even in death is one of the greatest actors American or otherwise...thanks again for giving him the credit he so richly deserves and hopefully introducing a number of new generations to his work...thx again!

  • of course, I just wish that more people my age could watch and appriciate his acting skills.

  • one of my favorite actors, thanks for posting!Such a beautiful voice he had and had he been a bit taller he might have been a leading man.

  • ah yes indeed! :)

  • Let it not be said that Claude Rains avoided ambiguous parts in less than stellar movies. With some roles that still reflect the power of a consummate actor - Rains first among peers with that hallowed title - Claude starred in Irwin Allen's the original "The Lost World" (1960) as Professor George Edward Challenger. The film bombed, but take a look at the vhs and see for yourself what an actor's actor is all about.

  • Have you seen "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"? I LOVE that film and he is just marvelous in it.

  • I sadly have not. I want to though I may rent it soon.

  • You're right that there isn't much on YouTube about Claude Rains, but if you really wanted to do him tribute, shouldn't you have spelled his name right on the video? (Rains not Raines)

  • You might have noticed I spelled his name correctly on the title and in the little speal about my video. I did spell his name correctly in my other version of this video but uploaded the wrong one, with all of the misspellings in it.

  • I'm glad you liked it, I'll have to see The Paris Express.

  • This was great!!!!!!! Thank you very much for this video!!!!!!!!!

  • Your welcome! ^_^

  • WHOS THAT!?

  • Claude Rains, a 1920's to 1970's actor, who was in those movies you saw in my video and many more, like "The Adventures of Robin Hood." and a few Alfred Hitchcock episodes. ect... you can check out IMDB the movie database to see other movies he was in. Also on another note he is a really good actor with a powerful voice that commands attention.
