Why oh why can't there be music like this at the top of the charts today!? I really miss the 1970's. I feel sorry for the kids of today growing up with the "popular" music of today.
hard doubt works for love.I couldn't believe unless people were different then what i thought.Just as someone passionate about obstacles to human potential, relies solely on the belief, beyond expectation or obligation .We knew racism was sick and we pointed it out until a miracle happened.nature kidz that could not c race( just the economic exclusion) .passion for the real supersedes. not knowing" , creator of doubt can b a miraculous rebirth of two from 1.deep loving trust appears by test
I dedicate this song to my very best friend 82sweetheart . Hey, 82, if you read this, then just know that miracles do happen from time to time~ only believe.
I knew it, around 3:05 he mentions "I got a taste of the real world, when I went down on you." I swear I was shopping at Target one night and heard that line. Nothing like listening to some guy talking about eating pussy when you are buying your parents an anniversary card!
I saw them in Pittsburgh in 1975 on the Red Octopus tour, Grace and Marty were challenging each other to see which one could hit the highest notes on this song. Both were winners that night! What a well written song lyric wise but how the hell did they get away with the lyric's @ 3:00 I mean they fit perfectly but didn't the censors know what they were talking about. I HAD A TASTE OF THE REAL WORLD, AT LEAST A DROP OF IT, WHEN I WENT DOWN ON YOU, GIRL.
This song came out my sophomore year of high school . . .1975. I was nuts about a girl named Gail whom I became acquainted with in a ceramics class during the previous year. We never had another class together and I never detected any sense in her that she was as interested in me as I was in her. But whenever I hear this song or Orleans "Dance with Me" I find myself drifting back in time and warmly embracing those wonderful feelings I had for that special girl.
This song is from my girlfriend in 1975 to me, and now we rekindled our love for each other in 2011 she found me in 2010, now 2011 we are back together, I DO LOVE HER SO, and even MORE then ever NOW
Just read this on Marty Balin.."His wife, Karen T. Deal, died on November 19, 2010, in Temple Terrace, Florida, after choking on food. She was 57 years old. He has two daughters - Jennifer and Delaney Mariah Skye.
This is my all time favorite love song......it doesn't get any sexier or sensual or powerful......the lyrics are amazing, only to be outdone by Marty's vocals. I can listen to this over and over and over.......it really does transport you.
thank you for the lyrics to a most timeless love song, which few has equaled. i used to listen to this song driving at night, and would be transported to another dimension!
I love this song. I think this song has a place in everyone's heart and you may have heard it a thousand times before that happened and if it hasn't yet it can still happen and if does it won't be a miracle but i guarantee you'll believe....Can i get a thumbs up from all those who believe??
I think I first heard this song in 1978 and was floored by it's lyrics and musical composition..... what a beautiful song. . . . "Ain't nothin' better !"
I also love the swells of the violin parts. So much of the 70's songs had great bass lines and violin orchestral parts. Best to hear this song with headphones to full appreciate the arraingments.
I was 9 years old when this song was new. I remember hearing it on King Biscuit Flower hours in California and knew even at that age that it was a special kind song. Like most here, I am now 45 years old and still mezmorized by it. P.S I met Marty Balin in SF Guitar Center once. He was a cool dude.
I was in kindergarten when this song was a hit and I can still remember asking my mom to play the record over and over again. Now as an adult who was lucky enough to find his "Miracle", these words mean so much more. Grace backround vocals are perfect in this song. It is one of the best love songs ever written.
So when i was younger around 2004, i heard a sped up version of the chorus to this song in a rap song. Ive been searching endlessly for that song or even an instrumental.. Ive been searching a long, long while now :/ no luck. anyone willing to help? would appreciate it SO SO much.. :(
Liked Miracles as a kid, then heard it way too many times and it grew old... but listening to it 35+ years later and clearly understanding the lyrics (more then simply knowing it was a love song), I've developed a newfound appreciation for this song, and for Marty Balin. Beautiful montage of photos, made much moreso powerful by the emotional moment in the song. The first photo is absolutely stunning: is that from an Airplane or Starship album? Your video creation is wonderful
Thank you, LochRaven62, for putting this together in HQ with the lyrics sung and written by Marty Balin (whom I love, love, love) and background vocals by Grace Slick (whom I also love, and it's funny how they hated each other), well, and putting it against the purple background, the perfect color for this song, and my favorite color as well. I love listening to this song after listening to With Your Love. Beautiful!
Balin was working in a Milwaukee bowling alley and the Sai Baba was making the morning line for the horse racing at Santa Anita.
At that point, Nixon resigned the Presidency and became lead guitarist for the Rolling Stones, to make enough dough to post bail for Agnew, who had been caught shoplifting in Thailand.
Such a comforting and enlightening song. The history behind this song is, Marty Balin was on a pilgrimage in Puttaparty, India to visit the Sai Baba, and also with his girlfriend at the time (Barbara). Apparently Balin wrote the entire song during this visit to see the Sai Baba and his love for his girlfriend. I knew there was more to this song than just "earthly" lust. Trivia enjoy!

That was fantastic. The audio was perfect. Peaceful and serene yet powerful. This song could mellow out just about anyone after a tough day. Great job. Thanks
this is an amazing song and so very true...gonna send it to the love of my life..he is my sugar and i am his coffee...sugar on it that's how i like it...
Well done, one small error....when he sings "I had a taste of the real world" The counterpoint vocal is "Don't waste a drop of it." other than that you did a fantastic job!
What a fantastic post! First off, it's certainly one of the best songs ever put together. Marty Balin is fantastic. But the lyrics behind the song are what makes it so profound. I am sure most people really never got a chance to pay close enough attention to catch the fact that this song is sung in counterpart, not just simple mimicking backround vocal. It is so much more then a catchy tune or melody. Thanks for the post.
Thank you so much for posting this. This song is so POWERFUL. One of very favorites. I think the intended purpose of the song is to woo "the woman" in some man's life. For me, the meaning is so much deeper - its about Love as general and specific as it can be. The era that the song was written is also my favorite. Music between 1970 and 1975 just can't be beat....I think its the pinnacle of all the music ever written.
Wow! What an amazing song; so, so sexy in the way it builds up. Voices, lyrics, melody; it's got it all. Truly the most beautiful song ever written.
This is a road map to ultimate love between a man and a woman, the becoming of one in body and mind. Wow it doesn't git better than this. If you don't have a dream of your own, you will always work to fulfill another.
I'm deeply offended by your choice of the first four words of your reply, up to and including the exclamation point. If you don't know, you betta ask somebody before you get in the game. No blame, No fear.
I Love this song so much, the vocal arrangements, the repetitive lyrics the way they sing it over each other is so Excellent. This is a special song, and for some reason the line "Pretty please with sugar on it "gets me, lol... this is a song I can listen to[and have!] over and over again.
@linny50 I couldn't agree more. I LOVE this song...just for the reason you said. The repetitive lyrics almost sound like a chant....brilliant song writers....I wish I had the talent.
Steve Wright played this (radio edit) on his show last week and I thought "Urm?!". Hadn't heard it for years. Downloaded it and burnt it to cd. Must have played it about 500 times since. I'm getting a bit concerned. Is it just me or is this one of the best bits of music ever recorded?
For tonycopp: the saxaphonist "who rips it up" is Irv Cox! Like I wrote earlier this my all-time fave! I do believe in "Miracles"! Can I get an amen from all the women out there?!
@tonycopp Grow up my ass!I still love this song but I just didn't know it had such an explicit lyric.I sang it the other night at karaoke and they had omitted that line.I was kind of relieved b/c I thought I was going to have to look at the floor at that point.
This is my favorite song of all time. There are so many memories attached to this song in my personnal history. Lost my virginity to this song. When I was interning at the local radio back in '81, it was played for me on my birthday, (broke the current format). When JS came to Royal Oak in '98, at their first encore of that show, only Marty came out with his guitar. He began strummin', I yelled out "Miracles" , he seemed to chuckle and then started playin' it. One of my all time great memories!!
I abandoned the JA after Spencer got ousted in 70. I loved everything they did up til then. I thought the magic was gone after that. I've heard they did a couple of half-decent things afterward. What would you reccomend? Red Octopus worth a shot is it?
A truly mystical piece of music. It is almost as if Balin captured it floating around in the ether. A rare combination of stream of consciousness and structure. What makes it all the more appealing is that it so ultimately uplifting and hopeful.
get the bell bottoms and the jean shirt out. Man this brings back so many visions from the past. The first love, the first dance, the first total and true heartbreak. We thought it was going to be like this forever. Thank god I'm with the girl I was ment to be with.
Great job! Great editing working with basicly two layers of lyric and keeping the two in time; tricky. And oh, what poetic lyics: "You Ripple Like the River When I Touch You"
Love is the answer, makein me crazy, if you only believe like I believe. The 1970's were great. Pot was great, Acid was cheap and love was right where you found it. The last great decade! What happen in believen in yourself and others?
We first made beautiful love to this song, -even though we are no longer together, it will ALWAYs be special to me! When I am missing him and the special connection we had, I listen to this song and remember.......
Sweet, sweet Lewis - you brought Eros into my life and woke me from a deep slumber. Wish I could go back and savor that first pleasure. That'd make me believe in miracles - hell yeah.
I love this song and the times late 60s,70s and early 80s. Some how these lyrics got past the censores. I wouldn't say it's romantic but it IS SENSUAL to the max. Grace was so beautiful with her striking blue eyes and there was no one like the plane. Boss. Thank you San Francisco. Thank you orange sunshine.
One little quibble. The photo at 6:04 is not of the Jefferson Starship lineup that recorded this song. The guy between Paul Kantner and Grace Slick is Micky Thomas, not Marty Balin. (Balin sings lead on this song.) Thomas joined the group after Balin left in 1978.
Thank you for showing us the poetry and passion woven into the lyrics. And what a magical, spinning melody rising to the heights with Balin's tenor. The other voices were provocatively arranged too. OOOh, I miss the 70s...

Truly one of the most beautiful and sensuous love songs of all time.

I Love this song so much, the vocal arrangements, the repetitive lyrics the way they sing it over each other is so Excellent. This is a special song, and for some reason the line "Pretty please with sugar on it "gets me, lol... this is a song I can listen to[and have!] over and over again.
linny50 1 year ago

"When I went down on you girl?" I love this song but I didn't know it was so nasty.

@Capcoor Oh, Grow up!
tonycopp 1 year ago
@tonycopp Grow up my ass!I still love this song but I just didn't know it had such an explicit lyric.I sang it the other night at karaoke and they had omitted that line.I was kind of relieved b/c I thought I was going to have to look at the floor at that point.
Capcoor 1 year ago
@Capcoor more constructively, say what you feel:
'I had a taste of the real world,
when I went out with you girl'..that plays like the Stones on Ed Sullivan.."let's spend some time together"...no excuses, no blame
tonycopp 1 year ago
@tonycopp LOL.That works.

Red Octopus worth a shot is it?
jakeenan 1 year ago

Great Starship stuff with Marty Balin singing (the guy between Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas)

Actually, though, "Allez" means "Go" not "Come". Come would be "venez" or some form of "venir".

Love is the answer, makein me crazy, if you only believe like I believe. The 1970's were great. Pot was great, Acid was cheap and love was right where you found it. The last great decade! What happen in believen in yourself and others?

Sweet, sweet Lewis - you brought Eros into my life and woke me from a deep slumber. Wish I could go back and savor that first pleasure. That'd make me believe in miracles - hell yeah.

I love this song and the times late 60s,70s and early 80s. Some how these lyrics got past the censores. I wouldn't say it's romantic but it IS SENSUAL to the max. Grace was so beautiful with her striking blue eyes and there was no one like the plane. Boss. Thank you San Francisco. Thank you orange sunshine.

nice job

One little quibble. The photo at 6:04 is not of the Jefferson Starship lineup that recorded this song. The guy between Paul Kantner and Grace Slick is Micky Thomas, not Marty Balin. (Balin sings lead on this song.) Thomas joined the group after Balin left in 1978.

Thank you for showing us the poetry and passion woven into the lyrics. And what a magical, spinning melody rising to the heights with Balin's tenor. The other voices were provocatively arranged too. OOOh, I miss the 70s...
