Age is no excuse though. I talked to a 15 year old kid a few days ago who knew exactly who The Police were. And there's a video on YouTube of a Swedish kid doing a really damn good cover of "Roxanne" and another kid who made a pretty cool video for "Darkness" (another Police song).

Also, I have a box set of Simon and Garfunkel songs, even though they were around LONG before I was even born. Emo kids claiming they don't know about something because they're "too young" is BS.

You're probably right...but you never know. I've seen so many covers by other singers and bands where the audience goes nuts as soon as they hear a few lines and recognize the song. "Message In A Bottle" is one of the most well known songs in the world. The Police are so well known that probably everyone has heard at least a few of their songs at some point, without knowing who they were. They really were that big and that influential.

I'll judge a piece of music by what it does musically, what it does emotionally, and what sort of performance it is. This is a great song and a good performance. If you say the version by the Police was different and really good, I'll take your word for it.

BTW, I heard Sting do a version on acoustic guitar, and it was similar to Mayer's, so I uess he can't be too far off...
