I'd just like to point out to everyone complaining about the end of this video, that the "obnoxious host" is Jools Holland, one of the best, most popular and most enduring musicians and television personalities in Britain.
Also, absolutely amazing music, and an incredible voice. Makes me even more proud to be from Yorkshire, if that's even possible.
@xenophon92 I like Jools, but its fair to say he's never been the greatest host ever, but the fact that he has a go and that that's his style is charming as well as a little bit irritating. He's been like that since The Tube days
I have only been aware of Kate for a couple of week, managed to get the DVD live in Leeds and checked out many of her songs on you tube. She is a treasure and I love the way she sings with her thick Barnsley accent ok Pennistone accent. I love her music and when I her "Who`s going to sing me Lullabies " It gets to me and I love it.
She is brilliant and I hope I can see here soon in concert
For me Kate is definetely the most inspiring voice of Britain's folk scene. Britain and Folk have a nightingale to cherish and let free to sing whenever she feels the need to....
@richiewitt And of course you are allowed to love Irish singers and compare whoever you like to Shirley Bassey, 'cept our kate is from Yorkshire not the Emerald Ises, and Shirley Bassey is Welsh and sings such an entirely different genre of music. Saying Kate Rusby is the next Shirley Bassey is like saying Chinese table tennis star Hao Shuai is the next David Beckham.
I am so happy to see the voice of England singing with the pride of Scotland. The proudest I have been in a unified Britain in a long time. Cheers Lass
Kate Rusby is like heroin - once you hear her, you're addicted. Too bad the host of the show completely spoils the angelic moment with all his obnoxiousness (if that's even a word.)
Magnificent. Kate is already a marvellous singer, and yet, the Pipes and Drums of the Scots Guards brings a military presence that makes even more musical. Absolutely brilliant.
I love the fact that she sings in her own Yorkshire dialect! It's "Brahss! and Clahss! not the Southern dipthongs. She is such a credit to real England! God bless Kate and i'm off to see her at Celtic Connections in Glasgow! Our Kate!
Hey there music lovers....(authentic). Does anyone have any info as to when and or where Kate will be in Southern California? What a true blessing, to be able to see her perform. I'dlove to travel to the British Isles, but times are lean. Any concerts in the USA in 2009......I'd love to go. Thanks. Her soulful voice gives me the sweet chills...and pure harmony can heal a broken heart. Thanks again.
You can always check her Web site. I booked to see her at The Sage at Newcastle from there. Honestly, if you knew what England was like, playing in London is like a foriegn country to Kate!
The authentic voice of England. This girl reminds all who know, just how forgotten the real voice of the country has become under the weight of the estuary wide boys in London and their sickening sucking up to everything foreign.
@PeelTower I'm not British, but I agree. Most british guys my age I know don't even have a proper accent anymore. Blame the Americans :)) (and don't forget to remind them where the Mayflower came from!)
@AndyRaslan Haha! Nice try, but the Mayflower was carrying the English Separatists avoiding persecution by Queen Elizabeth I and her successor, King James I. The Separatists fled to Leyden, Holland before leaving for the New World after they realized that the Dutch were having too "worldly" of an influence on their children. So technically, you can't blame it on the Americans. Cheers, lad! ;-)
You have to admire the person mixing this, A pipe band is a powerful thing and yet the balance is pretty spot on. I uses play snare drum in a pipe band and 4 pipers, 2 snares and a drum major (about half a small marching band) can make some noise is mean to be heard over a battlefield.
Kate does a mix of stuff derived from English folk but is influenced by British folk more generally. Her ex husband is Scottish so maybe he insisted. Bring on the bagpipes! Oh and the kilts! ;)
I was sat alone as all my friends were up to general mischief upstairs at a house party. It was like 1am by the time this came on, and I couldn't actually move for half an hour. Such a beautiful song. I met her in Oxford on her tour in late 2006, it must have been 2004/5 when this was on the show, no?
i remember watching it and knowing all the words because i got the CD for christmas 6 days earlier, and I was refusing to move from my seat as soon as i saw her in the celebrity audience bit.
and i somehow knew all the words off by heart after only 5 and a half days hahaha.
The thing about folk music is, blending different music makes new, exciting and wonderful music. There doesn't need to be a racial connection. The music is connection enough.
What I meant is that her original recording doesn't have them on it, just wondered why they appear on the live version. I like it and agree it works. Wouldn't say we Scots are a different "race" from the English (though some might!) I guess you meant "ethnic connection"?
Definitely an ideal song for any day of the year. As a mate commented on her before '...so cute, you want to put her in your pocket & take her home...'
@Dorain1969 Yes, I've read that she's often asked her age when she wants to buy a bottle of wine. I've seen her live and she's absolutely adorable. Also, you can rest assured that English traditional music will remain alive and well as long as she and others like her are on the scene.
This song makes me wanna up sticks and wander the countryside with a bow and arrow and a satchel with some flat bread in it. I would also have a hat.
