actually, windows forcefully causes a lag because they want you to use their graphics api(directx). If you ran WoW on opengl in a different OS such as mac/linux, opengl runs much smoother than on windows.
That is also the reason why xbox is the only console that uses directx, because it is ran by Microsoft which wants to use their api. All other consoles use opengl.
@PSPfanBOY22 Well, duh! but the bottleneck is unexplainable here, because, how come it's fast with D3D and slow with OpenGL? if I were using Vista or 7 where OGL is cheated on to be slow, okay, but this was on XP o.O
@PSPfanBOY22 Yeah, that's what I realized months after I posted this x.X. Still then, that's a proof that OGL must be doing something wrong then :P either them, or Blizz :P
Two things - I think that windows contains a better implementation for OpenGL now - but windows has been optimized to use DirectX. OpenGL got far better results on Mac OS and Linux than windows until Windows 7. Now OpenGL works just a bit better under unix systems.
Wow in opengl in Ubuntu runs slightly faster for me than DX in Windows 7, this is on a HD4870 and X4 945@3.8ghz. My minimum fps is the same for both, but my average is 20 fps higher due to higher max in opengl.
Opengl unfortunately seems to give lower framerate for me when I play on Debian linux. I have an amd64 duel core 3000+, 4 gigs of ram, and a nvidia 9800 GTX 512mb with a suitable mobo that I know wont bottleneck any of these. I remember once that wow seemed to run flawlessly on fedora. Maybe blizz devs made more optimizations for directx??
I use OpenGL for WoW on Wine on Ubuntu and it makes a world of difference there, i go for 30-60/70 FPS to 120-300 FPS, Also a Pentium 4 will bottleneck a GPu like that an under power it somewhat, you also have 4x AA on and all this stuff. i have had good luck with stuff like this but who knows and all maybe it was improved since you posted this video.... I'm running the most current WoW patch and WOTLK so....
WoW is mainly designed for DirectX and contains lots of optimization for it but not for OpenGL.
Personally I think that PCs are dieing in game industry. Now consoles are cheaper and simpler to maintain that the PC (upgrading video cards and stuff like that) so I would prefer OpenGL as it's more powerful than enough on PCs and let's leave DX for Xbox.
IDK why did they make an OGL engine as they do not make builds for Linux and Mac OSX. Maybe they're looking at the future, IDK.
If you're using default XP driver for your card, it has native DirectX, but instead of native OpenGL it has its wrapper around DirectX, i.e., OpenGL commands are translated into DirectX. Look around youtube on videos running WoW in Wine on Linux (for example, this one: watch?v=2Are9NW_P7w&feature=related). Take into account that most of them they also run recording software and Compiz.
@DigitalWebOwner Microsoft couldn't make it any more obvious that they're trying to maintain their monopolies and destroy the Open Source community in every avenue possible. Such a shame.
Nice, some random dude says your warrior blows and you come here to tell me my processor sucks? come on, when you get some understanding about computers work (graphics, specs, hardware, software, OSes and their APIs, etc) then I'd believe that. However, you wouldn't say something like that if you did know what I do. I'm no noob, and you should learn how to not be one - starting by researching before posting such lame comments.
@FearlessLT Uhh, do you see how old this video is? also, what are you talking about? I had the latest nvidia drivers at that time, there's no "OpenGL drivers" around, NVIDIA has them, and I had the latest official version so... check a little before making comments like that like you know everything >_>;
@dragondarkguy2008 in fact I do. I'm programming 3d models for my science projects and stuff like that, it includes shadering and other advanced technologies, and from my personal experience, opengl is faster, compatible with more platforms and has higher quality in everything...
As for you, a guy recording his screen with .1mpx camera - stop being a cocky brat bragging about his knowledge, because you obviously don't know anything, kid.
hey i have same gfx card and i lag like that too, im not really computer savvy so could you guide me thru what u did? i have windows vista if thats important...thx
I didn't fix it, all I did was to change it to OpenGL first to show how laggy it is, but if you don't change anything then you'll be on D3D. You can change it if you put SET gxApi "opengl" in config.wtf

@dragondarkguy2008 well Open GL is not well disign for windows but if you do a test on linux with Onpen gl vs directx opengl is gonna win ;)

@gamesplayedHD And Direct X was not designed for Linux. So you really can't compare the two.

Linux however doesn't

Your processor and ram are crap. But you got a waaay better card than i do... Luckyy. But my ram and CPU are much better lol. Mines still slower.

Most likely is your processor. Could be bottlenecking it... and you only have 1.5GB RAM.

If you ask me; right now, running on OpenGL looks nicer than DirectX on WoW. But it definitely requires more juice.

Opengl is wrapped through directx compatibility layer only since dx10.1. Windows XP dont have such problem.

hey.
OpenGL is an really old let´s say way to scripting and makeing 3D graphics. Ok the newest 3.0 Version is ok, but DX10 is far better for Games.
How ever Wow use the old OpenGL technic. So don´t worry about the lag with openGL it´s normal. just use d3d it´s still fine =)
opengl is dead since 2002, when directx 7 came out it really blasted opengl over the world, even 3.0 can´t beat dx10...
wikki11 3 years ago
ps 3 use opengl, autocad, on mac os is only ogl etc. On windows xp thanks opengl 3.2 you can use shader model 4,geometry shader etc.
