Sad that an MBA (the bottom of the barrel where Masters degrees are concerned) is all that's required to be better educated than most of your competitors.
I like Buddy Romer too, but I need to know more about him. (Of course that's the case being made here.) I have a hard time taking at face value that I can trust a former Governer of LA to combat corruption.
@dianalarious All you really need to know about Buddy is that he ran against Edwin Edwards in '88 and won. He fought corruption for four years and then big money demonized him so bad that Buddy had to drop out of the race for fear of splitting the vote and letting a racist like David Duke win. That's when Edwin Edwards won and the term when Edwards did the things that got him locked up in Texas for Corruption.
So when Buddy says he knows corruption when he sees it...You can believe him.
@thepupil2 Thanks! I'm a Texan, so I don't know LA politics except that we've always just heard that LA is super-corrupt. However, Texas no has no leeway from which to call the kettle black.
I mostly like these reports except that in each one that I've seen she has slipped in a negative INACCURATE one-liner against libertarianism. If someone wants to disagree with libertarianism on principle, that's fine, each is entitled to their own opinion, but I don't condone misrepresenting something to sway opinion.
@dianalarious You have a point about misrepresentation BUT this is a quote taken from the Libertarian Party Platform on Education:
"Education, like any other service, is best provided by the free market, achieving greater quality and efficiency with more diversity of choice. In particular, parents should have control of and responsibility for all funds expended for their children's education."
Also, I don't remember the libertarians getting made fun of in the other reports.
@jvt121 Well I agree that school should be by the parents or the community. I know that is not popular, but I homeschooled my irst son until we moved to Germany, now they both go to school because it's mandatory. I am not a religious fanatic or any of those homeschool stero types. I had my son enrolled in many groups and courses outside the home and our days were very full and social. When I compare myself to the rest of the homeschool community that I knew, I was the biggest slacker.
addditionally, I had to continue paying the exorbitant school district taxes. We were able to purchase all we needed and participate in all we wanted or had time for for less than what we paid in school taxes. There was no need to disrupt the general flow of society with things like school busses and school crossing zones. There was no worry about school shooters or bullying. And I was able to construct the environment for my child which I felt was best for him.
I have nothing against the idea of public school, per se. But it should be more locally driven in my opinion. And like I said, I was giving my son a high quality education provided by the free market for less than my taxes. His PE class was with a Phys Ed PhD, he learned music from a former public school teacher with 30+ years of expereince and so on. Meanwhile Texas, our home was ranking at or near the bottom of all 50 states in every category - except perhaps teen pregnancy.
Don't get me wrong, I personally know and love MANY teachers and they are all excellent, yet they are all, unfortunately, hindered by the system. I would prefer that they be in a freer environment where they are able to give of themselves without the constraints imposed on them by national oversite.
@jvt121 I'm sorry, I totally digressed there. I am not completely opposed to public education, but you can see in my comments that I support a libertarian model. Perhaps if shools were hired by communities, municipalities or states, and could be simply replaced for poor perfomance, that would be a "meeting-in-the-middle" of sorts. Free market solutions do not mean "no education." But it is a very hard argument to make that what we have works well.
@jvt121 Actually I have seen one other episode. I do not remember which it was. My mother sends me these. And I remember thinkning that there were a coupld of spots in it that were a bit mean-spirited more than ironic, and then this one kind of of-handed remark about libertarians. I know that there are several types of libertarians, so maybe I am off about what the "party platform " is. To me it's about being free to choose to do things your own way within the confines of fair-play.
@dianalarious Hi D. Thanks for your responses. They made me think about things and I think you have made some good points. I can't believe your mother sends you these! GO MOM! That is great.
I like your 'meeting in the middle' idea and, I think we can both agree that the system is not working as well as it need to in order to prepare children etc.
Buddy claimed his admininstration's programs was responsible for bringing Louisiana'a unemployment rate down from 12% to 5.9%. Now he's taking credit for the job Hurricane Katrina did. Half of them drown, moved out of state, or have jobs in construction now.
Individual's who have been told all of their live's that their opinions are stupid and mean-less will fine that when a medium such-as Facebook or Twitter come along that gives a voice to the humble and the humble discover that they are many.... They will relegate the oppressors to irrelevance.
