  • Ghost Stories from the Deep: The Forgotten Empress of Ireland

.. Terry German told one such tale. He had entered an area of the wreck intending to shoot some video. When he placed the camera down to make some adjustments, he started an avalanche of debris, unearthing about four-dozen skeletal remains, many of which were children. The bones completely blocked his only exit and reduced the visibility to zero. Somehow, he was able to collect himself and escape the area,

  • 1523 DEATHS ON TITANIC. 1012 DEATHS ON THE EMPRESS OF IRELAND. 1198 DEATHS ON THE LUSITANIA.

  • @bobmarleyisgod1

More passengers died on the Empress than on the Titanic. There were more total deaths on Titanic, both passengers and crew combined

  • i herd that alot of ppl who dive to the wreck of the empress of ireland died...it was on a show i was watchin ...the wreck is supposed to be cursed but i dunno?

  • @photolitherland they were more dead in the titanic. it's just the pourcentage of the death that is higher than titanic.

  • Music is not quite so bad, sure the ship sank and many died. This is the music that many of those down in the engineering spaces likely heared, and those that built the ship. In Ireland. Going to pubs in Ireland, this is the music they played. It was the "dance music" of the very early 20th century. Worked hard, but were treated like dirt when coming to the US. At least they worked hard, illegals come in now, just for the welfare, and activists want us to lay a red carpet out for them...

  • Sad there are not any ships like that anymore. Would love to be down in the engine room, seeing all that huge machinery, and the electric plant, state of the art stuff. Back when DC powered things, before automated switching circuits, computers and transistors. Sad there is not even a replica of one of those giant engines running on steam. Maintenance for one though, is ALOT of work. Just look at steam trains that still run, and ship engines were much, much bigger.

  • And there are people who are obsessed with video games...

This is what people SHOULD be doing, seeing history.

  • man i gotta get down there and see if there is anything left to steal. That plaq at the first of the video looks nice.

  • Yep - more died on this sinking than on the titanic, but it was so close to WWII that it didn't get a lot of press!!

  • Um.. no... Empress Of Ireland had 1012 deaths while the Titanic had 1503... Empress of Ireland had more passengers die by a mere number of 8 but the Titanics crew pused the death toll over The Empress.

  • Turn off the volume, then!!

This is not a documentary on the Empress of Ireland, but a snapshot of the trip I took to Quebec with friends to dive the wreck. GET OVER IT!!!

I like the music... it stays.

  • @KimInNB make it even more upbeat to annoy photolitherland

  • @trustthistime Love the way you think - next time I do a video on it the music will be very unsuitably from Lady Gaga and I'll have cartoon skeletons doing a bump & grind around the wreck.

  • did you see any?

  • there's still bodies inside the wreck isn't there?

  • yes

  • Ah, the faces on those divers that I handcuffed went we saw all the artifacts that was taken from the ship.I am glad that everything is been taken cared of...Less robbers around to make a quick buck...More stuff to look at for the other divers...

  • because the empress had more crew than the titanic, the number of deaths was more

  • urrmm, titanic actually had more deaths than empress of ireland

  • My teacher's husband went in my class and tuaght us about this..he went under the waters and he actually visited this place and he brung the plates that the people ate and and she also brung the tile from the kitchen floor..so it was pretty neat (:

  • close to the museum there his now a old war submarine but... man they had all sorts of problem getting it on the shore

  • were i live in the museam it ahows stuff from the empress of ireland they found it in the water and brought it up and put it on display

  • not freezing!? are you sure your in the st.lawrence?

  • yes he is .

  • Very awesome you got to dive this wreck! Im starting my wreck diving specialty pretty soon and will be starting off on the USS Yukon in San Diego! What is the depth on this dive?

  • I believe you hit about 170 at the bottom. However the wreck starts at about 130.

  • I agree with sheep21, In Dulci Jubilo isn't really the sort of music for looking around the site of one of the world's worst maritime disasters. When you think of how many people died on the Empress, some of those interior shots are chilling.

  • shame they dont make ships like this anymore

  • greta video, music a tad upbeat for a mass grave imho

  • You actually get to go diving at the wreck sight?! Man, you're living my dream!!!

  • is there a movie about the empress of ireland???????

  • It doesn't look like there is, sadly. A few documentaries, DVD features and books, but no feature films. It's a shame, really... I wouldn't have minded seeing one.

  • I know, this tragedy needs more attetion if you ask me. Maybe that can be my goal in life, to make an Impress of Ireland movie. ^-^

  • There's happy music and you add sad music too it?

Um....I don't get that one thing.

  • why the annoying cliche irish music it was a british ship

  • actually alca, the empress if ireland and the empress of britain were both canadian ships. they got it made in glasgow so that they could get more europeans faster into canada.

  • As ultradumbass points out - the Empress of Ireland was a Canadian Ship, not a British one. Perhaps the name of the ship made me want to use Irish music, do you think?????

  • Man, I'd love to dive that. How deep is it?

Craiger, wood doesn't rot away as quickly in fresh water. I dove this one wreck in Lake Superior and it was in awesome condition.

  • it sank in the saint lawrence river?

  • my great aunt was a nerse on the britannic and was going to go on the empress but dicided her luck with saling wasnt that good...because she survived the britannic when it sank and the titanic... woldev been the empress to but i think she had a noff experince to surve it!

  • I visited the museum at Rimouski some years ago and enjoyed the Empress objects and artifacts. I'd love to dive it but I'm not an advanced enough diver. Surprising how well the wood is for a wreck that's been down there so long.

  • yea i know one of my great uncle's was a survivor only because he was a crew member working on deck that night and he had also been a survivor of the titanic but when the empress was hit he and a few others managed to evacuate a life boat on time.

  • my great great uncle was lost at sea when the empress sank he was only 25 years old he never made it to england to collect his fiancee and i still have pics and memorabillia from 1914 inc newspaper article about him .

  • je suis du canada quebec et ses mon reve un jour de pourvoir le voir de mes propre yeux ste navir la ses secrets
