Your thumbs secure the bar from slipping out of your hands. It is somewhat more comfortable than using a thumbed grip, but it's definitely not worth it when the bar comes crashing onto you.
@ninjeleia It's really quite simple. If a lifter's thumbs aren't wrapped around the bar, the bar has a much greater chance of escaping their grip and crashing down onto them. Such a grip has a smaller margin of error, and only needs to go wrong once for things to turn very ugly very quickly. It's not called the suicide grip for nothing, and anyone who swears by it is most likely a moron.
well... it would kill you if you dropped it on your chest as well... as it does... given the neck doesn't need your max to do that...

It's like the deadlift. You use the mixed grip so the bar doesnt roll out of your hands. In this case, your thumbs keep the bar secure.
