  • nice vid

  • @JogBird Sorry for my crude joke. Now. Honestly. Do I go for Canon 600D or this Sony? Please, pro's and con's.

  • @onlywhenpissed I'm in the same boat as you. The 600D or Sony NEX 5N. I personally want it for travel semi pro use so small is good, but I also need good audio. The lack of external microphone options on the NEX 5N might be a deal breaker. Hopefully I can find a way around this.

  • "body sounds"? Farts?

  • @onlywhenpissed lol.. camera body sounds.. e.g. af motors, aperture, clicking the wheel, moving the LCD, brushing the camera up against something.. you want to isolate the mic from all that stuff

  • How do you change the ISO by simply clicking on the left size of the click wheel? Is there any specific configuration I need to set up on the settings menu in order to be able to do that?

  • @jidenshaotoko Settings > Custom Key > Right Button .... there are a bunch of ways you can set it up.

  • what is the background piece?

  • @galaxysean its Mozart .. forget what piece it is

  • do you know if the problem of the noise is solved if I wan't to buy one now?

  • @POMSfforever im pretty sure it is. but, you can always try it out at the store before you take it home

  • @JogBird hehe I was planning to buy on the net :)

  • @POMSfforever Yes, I have one and it's fine. Unless you get an old one that was laying in stock somewhere it should not have the problem. Buy direct from Sony or through a reseller like B&H that has current stock. They will fix it free if you should get a "clicker". It's a quirky UI if you're used to SLR controls, but it has awesome IQ once you learn how to shoot with it.

  • @POMSfforever it has been solved via a firmware update though, so the one you test in the shop may still have the click.

  • @POMSfforever

Just bought one, the clicking sound when you move the camera is gone.

  • Thanks so much :D

  • thanks, jogbird

  • Guys .. now Sony Nex-5ND is it the same of Nex-5N ?? or another kind ??

please i will buy one but i need to make sure of Kinds

  • @RoZariYo911 yea, its the 5N.. i guess the "D" is for dual lens kit, specifically the 16/2.8 and 18-55. looks like its the UK package as well

  • I think the biggest question regarding the Sony mirrorless line of production is: Why didn't they put IS inside the body, like in their DLSRs.

  • @snupcho probably not enough space for it on the camera bodies; although, i guess they could have fit in the VG10/20 and the FS100 camcorders. its also heats up the sensor even more, e.g. there are no in-body IS cameras that shoot video with that function... the sony SLTs and Oly PENs dont do it.

  • @JogBird Hm, I'm not sure about the PENs but the Sony SLTs can shoot with IS turned on...

  • @snupcho yup, youre right aboot the sony slts. i know with the first gen slts, they had major issues with it overheating and such with the IS on, but, on the a65/77 it seems to have no overheating issues at all.

  • I think the whole clicking issue is an Internet hype. I just got my Sony nex 5n in Milton Ontario from best buy no clicking at all and I love the camera I highly recomend.

  • @foe832 the clicking issue was real; the click came from a part in the shutter mechanism that was not properly lubricated. sony is fixing that as part of the warranty coverage and all new stock should be click free. the internet probably did hype things up though.

  • okay... i have the nex 5k and i dont know how to record a video in 60fps or 50fps... it still records in 25fps i tried it in mp4 and in avchd but it is still 25fps so pleas help!!!

  • @persely Do you have the NEX-5N or the NEX-5? The "k" tells me that you have last year's NEX-5. You also have the PAL region version, which means it only has 25p (50i).

The camera shown in this video is the NTSC version of the NEX-5N (24p, 30p, 60p).

  • I'm no novice to digital photography (though recording videos yes) and I found this very useful + interesting. Thank you!

  • hm okay actually i received my camera and it only has 25i 25p 50p 50i.. what should i do? lol..

  • @SwagSushi Plug it in your computer and download a firmware update from Sony's website, if there's one.

  • @HollyTheFireNinja hm there is none ^^ 5n is too new xD should i give it back and buy an US import?

  • @SwagSushi Umm, think objectively. Will you lose money doing this? I think you might, if not from trading the camera then from shipping, etc. Do you need 60p or 60i immediately? Maybe you could wait until 5n is released where you are and send it to a Sony dealer to get it fixed. I actually want to get the C3 but I really want 1080p, so I guess I'm getting the 5N. 7 is a bit too expensive for me. lol

  • @HollyTheFireNinja actually it is available here, i live in germany, the problem is that here 25 fps is standard.. But I don't understand, why they don't give us a choice, I want to do collaboration videos with friends from the US and converting 25fps to 30 fps is 1. annoying and 2. reducing the quality..

Of course there is a reason behind 25fps, 30fps would flicker in some indoor situations, but i would appreciate at least a choice..

  • @SwagSushi you have the PAL version of the 5n. So, just sub 50p for 60p and 25p for 30p. I dont think the PAL version has 24p.

  • @JogBird PAL? what does this mean? And why yours has red writing (5N, a)?

  • @YEHluv PAL is a system of video encoding, the others are NTSC and SECAM. this varies by region. just google it for mroe info.

my 5n has red lettering because i took a Sharpie Paint and coloured it over. if you look closely, i also blacked out all the text on the body and the silver trim.

  • did i understand right? less framerate= more details?

  • @SwagSushi a lot of things will affect "detail" including the lens, compression and your ability to hold the camera still, etc. all things being equal, if your data/frame ratio is higher, each frame will be compressed less leading to less compression artifacts and more retention of detail.

essentially, you have 24mbits to represent 24 frames (24p) vs. 28 mbits for 60 frames (60p). somethings gotta give, the 24p will have less compression per frame (but 60p gives smoother motion).

  • @JogBird Oh okay thank you for the explanation, i was just thinkin about the 24 and 30 fps.. 60 would only be for slomotion for me, since its kinda dark. I just cant decide between 24 fps or 30 fps i never understood that cinema look thing, but i allways liked 24fps more, but still there are people telling me 30 fps is an upgrade, and then there is also 25fps..i live in germany.. btw is there any reason to convert 60 fps to 30 fps? since thats a reason why some people use 30 fps

  • @SwagSushi just shoot lots of videos at different settings, you'll eventually figure out what you like. in terms of converting 60 to 30 fps, the primary reason is compatibility, 60p is the avchd2.0 codec and takes a bit more PC power to display nicely; whereas almost everything can play 30p. but, i shoot something at 60p i generally leave it 60p (unless m doing slomo) since that is what i set my shutter speed for. for youtube, 60p and 24p is converted to 30p. vimeo plays 60p natively

  • Thank you for making this video. It is very helpful.

  • wowww!i love the quality of images of this camera :)! Do you know you can make Time Lapse Photography with this camera?

These guys have an infrared remote time-lapse device for every major brand of cameras including this one. Check the website: tempus.bymac.org

  • I liked this- it was Awesome!

  • You. Are. Genius! I was considering this camera when I stumbled on your guide >_> Gotta get it tomorrow!

  • And my biggest question of all, how do i best use the video file. I am on a mac and have to use the usb connection as a simple folder and all the files are mts. when i try to play them they look really terrible with squiggly lines on the edges of things if there is any motion at all. I traded in my 600D for this camera purely on the ability to handhold it with reasonable steadiness but maybe i made a mistake.

  • @geoharmonic just do a google search. apple has chosen not to support avchd and you have to do some workarounds in playback and editing on a mac. its a well known issue. its an apple problem, dont blame the format. on a pc, its just drag and drop editing and playback.

  • @geoharmonic , I'm a Mac user too, you can edit it with Premiere Pro CS 5 that support AVCHD /and DSLR format or shoot the video using MP4 format (1440x1080 non square pixel is the same resolution as 1920x1080 AVCHD square pixel). Good luck..

  • I don't understand why but I am unable to shoot at 60p. Its tells me that i need to be using a blu ray. Next question, is I can't remember how i even got into the movie size menu, i am able to access the record setting which has two options, 1440x1080 and VGA, (which is better?)and file format (avchd andmp4).

  • @geoharmonic Just ignore that blu-ray warning, if yo see the [PS] icon, youre shooting in 1080p60. 5n only shoots avchd in 1080p; its the better format. I wouldnt bother with straight mp4 unless you need to shoot VGA for some reason.

  • btw thank you for the reply.

  • but why did you buy sony? why not canon or nikon because they are leaders in this field.. i am a sony fan thats why i want either a35 or nex5n? if it was your 1st interchangeable camera which 1 would you buy a35 or nex-5n? since you had 1 camera thats why you bought nex5n but what if it was your 1st camera?

  • @316aks i bought the 5n for shooting with my nikon lenses; the better sensor and 1.5 crop make it more ideal than micro43.

if i had no camera i would get the 5n, it will handle 90% of what the a35 will do and its just a fun, little camera. imo, if youre getting an SLR/SLT nowadays, its because you want to use SLR lenses and it should be D7000 or higher... i bet cameras like the 5n will start outselling entry and entry-mid level SLRs in a few years, they just make so much more sense

  • Thanks for your reply. I hope your upcoming video on manual lenses will cover trying to focus outside on a bright sunny day. My experience with LCD’s under those conditions is that I can barley see enough to frame the shot, let alone do fine focus. This is the one factor that may force me to wait for the NEX-7. I have 2 good lenses from an old film camera that I intend to use but they will both be manual everything.

I don't want to buy the OLED because it uses the same port as the mic.

  • Do you know of any way to shoot time lapse photos with the NEX-5N?

    Thanks.

  • @amosjsoma you can shoot a normal video (prob at 17mbps), then use a video editor to compress the time (thats what i did with my "Overheating" video using footage from an hx9v, its the same method). Or, you can buy an infrared intervalometer and use that to trigger the shutter in sequence.. then you need to merge those still photos into a movie. there are some good tutorials on youtube, they should work just fine with the nex5n

  • what about the lens adapters?

  • @360Rod0 im doing another one on shooting with manual lenses

  • Hi since you using Sony nex-5n can you please suggest me which camera should i buy - sony nex-5n or sony alpha a35?

  • @316aks the a35 would be better for action, sports, moving kids and its got a built in EVF and can use the whole range of Sony Alpha SLR lenses.

the nex has better video, is more compact, the AF is slower and not good for tracking fast action. it can accept an EVF, but, thats an extra $350 USD. the native lens options for the nex5n are more limited, but, you have unlimited adaptability potential.

so, it depends what you are looking for. i have another camera that is my action cam so i got 5n

  • great tips!!!

  • Might as well use a thing to stabilize your cam. which will greatly improve video overall.. something like SmoothShot Camera Stabilizer from ebay. Not more than $90.

  • You say in regards to frame rates always go for the way with the highest bitrate.. Does that mean always go with 60p as that is 28mbps?..

  • @lmackreath78 choose your framerate and then the highest bitrate; i.e. 60p@28mbps, 30p@24mbps, 24@24mbps. there really isnt a framerate that i always go with.

  • Great stuff!!
