One thing I can't stand in nonfiction is when the author insists on forcing themselves into the narrative... I would be legitimately interested in the story she was telling then she goes WAY off topic
This is undoubtedly the worst book I've ever had the displeasure of sticking on my CD player. The book is SUPPOSED to be about the pilgrims but the whole thing is about Sarah Vowell - her apartment in New York, her hatred of Reagan, her love of the Fonz. Sometimes she talks about the pilgrims. Mostly she talks about herself.
ANd after about 30 minutes of the book, I hate the stupid boring bitch.
Sarah Vowell; how ironic to post this simplistic critique to show the response an uneducated, irrational boob might have to your well researched and beautifully written book. You perfectly captured the closed-minded, knowledge-fearing caricature that is the antithesis of the Puritans - their complex beliefs and how those beliefs (mis) guided. Thank you for this entertaining and fascinating book, and for poking fun with this silly, meaningless post.
clearly you are a little uneducated about what an essay book is supposed to be about. people who read sarah vowell's ESSAY BOOKS do so because they like sarah vowell. yes, she plugs in personal anecdotes as well as opinions but it isnt meant to be a straight history book. if you were a little more intelligent you might have known that going in to it and known what to expect.
I read the actual book, and I'd have to argue that even when she talks about things from her own life she does so to illustrate larger points about the Puritans. Maybe you would find Wikipedia to be more your style.
