"Naz" is the word for "Ring" and gul is Tolkien's re-tooling the word ghoul. Nazgul essentially means "Ring-Ghoul" or "Ring-Wraith." The Nazgul are, in fact, the cloaked ghouls, or wraiths, not the beats they rode.
