Can someone please tell me exactly what an open header actually is? I thought I knew, but after watching a few vids, I seem to have been mistaken, and I would really like to know...
Ford came first and will always be first, chryslers done and chevy is technically a gov't owned company now. but Ford is still taking names all with its own money haha.
@h200022 yah but ya cant be ignorant towards chevrolet cause remember ford and chevrolets driveline was mostly bought from Dana and New process. The only two major differences between em were the motors and trannys.I own a '79 jimmy and I have to give it to Chevrolet for buildin the best motors and trannys back in the day.Everyone knows the TH400 just like everyone knows a 350SBC is a great motor along with the 454BBC.Dont get me wrong the 351W is a great motor and I got nothin against a 460BBF
you wont believe this , but i did read an article about ford..and basically it was that ford developed the small block chevy
so it goes to reason is why the y looks alot like a chevy ...and the y was out before the small chevy ..back in the early 50's ford was buying GM trannys ..so why couldnt ford sell GM a motor ford was developing...i always said for years its funny out of all motors..only the y and small chevy look alot alike ?...makes you think huh????
Sweet! The Y blocks sure are tough engines. Mine has 142,000 original miles, and has never been rebuilt. After 5 years as a daily driver and a trip from Maryland to California (turning around 3000 rpm the entire way), the Y-block has never let me down.
Wow! Amazing, I think they should start putting more y blocks in the car magazines. All I see is 350 after 350, it gets really old. These y block engines look, sound, and run AWESOME!
yeah dad had a 56 vicky 2dr ht with a 292 3/tree, he said there was nothing like that sound of it coming down the hill into town 2nd gear rev up then letting off-the crackly decel noise was LOUD. said the car had excellent top speed too and it shamed many 283's.
The "Y" refers to the panrails continuing below the crank centerline, this makes the block stiffer and gives a more ridged botom end. Drawback is that it also makes the block heavier. The FE is also a "Y" block.
LORD HAVE MERCY from the starter motor kicked in to the sound of that baby running close to wide open throttle, wow guy I almost heard that sucker down here in Australia.FORDROAD AUSTRALIA
This particular engine was de-stroked to get a smaller cubic inchs but as for the other stuff, like the cam .480" lift with 1.54:1 rockers and 250* Dur. @ .050 the heads are ECZ-G castings that are ported and polished with stainless 2.02" in and 1.60" ex valves. "Blue Thunder" intake with a "Demon" carb. and "Sanderson" headers. Listen to it on the "Dyno" video 6400rpm.
looks and sounds great tho i got a few questions....i just traded my 1965 ford for a 55 f100 and it has got a 292... i am not at all fermilier with these motors and was wandering where i can get performace parts...and are 302 parts inerchangeable?i would apreciate it very much if u could help with my question...thanks
A 292 Y-block is Very differant from a 302, no parts are interchangable. There are performance parts available still, altough a little hard to find. Do a serch for Y-blocks and find John Mummert. He is the go to for Hi-Po Y-block parts.
Good work guys. What a sweet sweet sound. Sure looks and sound like there's a few greenbacks went into this build. Check my page out for a few more old
Y-Blocks. They've got a sound all their own, don't they? Just HAD to rate this a 5 Star.
Well...the 312 was a Y block,,,is it a 312 ?

No problem here. :-)

@willvb13 The fact that there is not Chevy one in this video is enough to see there is no problem with it.....

The Y block was also used in medium duty and heavy duty trucks and they hold up just fine in that application. They are strong engines.

We also have one in a '60 F600, there is a video of that truck here too!

ok the dying question... what is the difference between a Y-block and a standard V-block. is there any performance advantage???
vitamincracing 3 years ago

mctim64 3 years ago
FE is a FE. Y blocks have the distributor, and oil pump at the rear of the engine. FEs have the distributor and oil pump at the front.
