@jason6295 All fancy rats are the same species, they are a domesticated version of the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus). The breed of these is hooded rat, I believe. Have fun with them!
Aw so cute! What uni subject were you taking? I'm taking arts but also doing psychology and biology and really would love to study animal behavior in the future so I could help improve animal welfare!
that is sooooo funny! all my life (while having rats involved) i always thought that they were fighting because they would wake me up in the middle of the night.
I agree with many of the statements here. no one knows how sweet a rat can be and what an adorable fun loving companion they can be. People can only see what they have heard. It's like pitt bulls, Pitt bulls have a bad rep just like rats. Pitts are only as vicious as the owner makes them. Rats are not nasty or anything! Rats are actually the sweetest pets I have ever had in my entire life!!! I love these babies!♥
It's horrible that rats and any animals are tested on (aside from fun tickling). I wish more people realized that hurting animals isn't the only way to find cures for diseases or to make sure some stupid makeup is safe.
This is adorable! But alot of rats do carry diseases, and they are one of the reasons how the black plague started, so I can see why some people dont like them. But they are so cute!
@wasnotexpecting I'm willing to bet most people aren't thinking, "Oh, there's a rat. Fleas on rats caused the Bubonic Plague, I hate those dirty assholes."
They hate rats because of more modern issues like infestations in cities. Domestic rats are clean.
you can tell the rats digging it cuz he keeps running to your hand not away fom it but i definitely understand why you put up so many explanations.... thanks for the video!
And thanks very much for caring about how the rats are feeling especially in a research environment... the work you are doing is awesome./
People think of rats as disease infested creatures. But really, they are such nice creatures and I love rats. My sister and I had 1 each and they both passed but they were so nice and in my rats last week he would snug and sleep right next to me. He died about 5 days ago but I love rats so much and I am getting two more. Rats are the best pets.
My rats were not living in cages like this, they were only put in here for tickling. They had constant access to food, so I doubt they were hungry. You do have a point though in that all testing done on animals in labs is ultimately unnatural but experimental psychologists often have to fore go normalcy in order to control all the variables and call something a true experiment. I agree with you though, and that is part of why I am now doing field biology.
I've just written an animal welfare project proposal looking at 50kHz vocalisations in rats as an indicator of affective state and welfare :) I think it's a really interesting area of research, I'd love to know your findings
That's an incredible idea for a thesis, I have a lot of respect for what you're doing. I'm definitely not an animal welfare activist, but that's genuinely necessary research from any perspective: unhappy captive animals may skew research results for a variety of reasons, including diminished immune capacity.
In any case, I'm curious and someone here might be able to help, what is the value of one of those sound converters? I have some rats myself, and it would be novel :p
What a gorgeous rat! The coloring on his entire head and all the way down his spine looks almost perfect to the marking standard for hooded rats. The owner should consider entering him into a show if he's still alive.
Thanks! unfortunately these rats were owned by my university and they are no longer alive (one of the reasons I will not be going into experimental psych). The purposes of my research were to try to better the welfare of animals like these kept in captivity for research in pretty barren conditions. It was sad research to do really, but I'm hoping it can be used to better the lives of animals used in research.
cute! so you are working on rat's affection reported by Dr. Panksepp, right? today I've just bought a bat detector to hear my pet rat's voice. so excited!
I was working on a project to see if I could somehow measure welfare with the tickling vocalizations (or laughter). I was hoping to create a new test to measure stress levels in animals that could be used to assess the happiness of animals used for research.
i played this for my ratties and they started getting really playful :)

@wasnotexpecting You do realize it was the fleas on the rats that spread the disease, right? Rats without fleas are safe.

It is a shame that rats have such a bad image. They are tame and make great pets and are so intelligent.
