It has to work on same principle as Google. Plus sensors that has to absolutely needs to be completely around the car, and every angel.
Or it will not be aware of things around it, in which it would not last long. Plus pedestrians needs to be worked out how to stop when there are some.
there's to many variables for it to drive completely on its own. almost impossible to be honest.
4 LIDAR sensors (3 forward facing, 1 rear) measure distances with accuracy to 1 cm to build a virtual map of the area surrounding the car, up to about 250 feet.
4 adittional automotive grade RADAR sensors are used to measure farther distances with less accuracy.
You're right. Besides the top piece, I can't tell it appart from a normal Prius. That is to say, they car here is not driving itself. From what the video shows, it IS just a normal Prius.
It looks like my firs cell phone.

@WTFhuh1
Variables like people and environment telemetry can all be modeled within an integrated system.
Driver less car are a few decades off but technology is being developed.

I wonder how many tumors I can get from putting my nose right next to the radar-lidar.

@bravecat100 There's no radar. That's a Velodyne infrared scanner. It's rated at eye safe- you would be fine even if you stared into the beam.

@Xormithan Actually, it's a LIDAR/RADAR array

@Darkdayz23 It's odd that they describe directional LIDAR if the velodyne scans full-circle. What are you reading?
