Just discovered Robert Cray after a flyer landed on my doorstep this morning for a local gig. He's great, and I;m off to get my tickets for the Bridgewater Hall Manchester.
My wife thinks he sounds a bit like James Carr. I have to agrre.
Caught Cray two weeks ago at the Wichita Zoo. 2,300 people, only $10 a head. Great 90 minute set.
Happenstance found him on the Harrah's riverboat in St. Louis when we were there a few years ago. $25 apiece and only about 50 people there. What a treat!
i can't possibly be the only one who thinks mr. cray has kept the rythym and the blues alive, when no one else can. think otis redding, ov wright, otis clay, sam cooke, and ....yeah ,add some sweet , blistering guitar work.
That man knows how to develop a solo over many bars, not just playing fancy lick after fancy lickwith no musical continuity, like most keyboard players I've heard. Its not enough to be a good technician if you can't develop a musical idea over more than two bars. Jim Pugh is one of the few who can pull that off beautifully.
I agree, he has a great sense of narrative in his playing. Nice to know he's still with Robert after a recent shake-up that saw Karl and Kevin leave the band.
OMG, didn't know........what happened to Karl and Kevin? We are just getting ready to purchase tix to see the band in Chico, and don't want any surprises. I would have been heartbroken if Jim left the group.
@jjboyjames I agree, but the way I see it Jim has the best gig in the world. Playing keys for Cray has got to be even better then Paul Shaffer's cushy gig.
Just saw Cray last night And Richards back in the band---He's a high energy guy and added some more spunk if thats possible--Tony's kick ass the skins too..Oh and Robert......!!!
Thanks for the info. Saw them in Ridgefield CT and couldn't figure out why Karl and Kevin weren't there. Rhythm section was a little overpowering for the small venue. The following night we saw them at a larger venue and they filled the space with an incredibly powerful performance.
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song live. I already had the album and had listened to it a million times. Then I went to his show and I literally teared up when he performed this song. I love this man.
One of my favorite songs ....after hearing this version, it is going right to the top...
I saw RB with the EC tour...he blew the roof off...such a soulful voice, and the strat playing is just so cool....thanks Robert, keep doing your stuff...!
I'm at work and have been listenting to Bro Robert alllllll day long. He and the guys have made a torturous job less so. I'm feeling good right about now. Coolness on the piano can play me anywhere, anytime. Mr. Gray and his compadres are sensational. I'll be jammin him again on tomorrow when the eagle flys. Thank you for this beautiful sweet soul, soulful music.
Thanks for Posting this!! I heard Robert Cray in March w/ Eric Clapton. I have always been a fan of Mr. Cray. Love this song on "Live From Across The Pond: The Robert Cray Band". Very cool video!!

Cray's voice and guitarwork simply carries me right along with each note. His smooth reminds me of Sam Cooke.
What a guitarist and singer. Simply great!

No, they've definitely moved on. Check Wikipedia for the new lineup. There's also a recent clip elsewhere on YouTube featuring Richard and Tony.
