  • hes given good quality basics to this tuning, now go out and practice

  • HELLO FROM US HERE DOWN IN BRAZIL!! THE GUY IS AMAZIN!! FANTASTIC EASY GOING WAY WE WISH HE COULD BRING US SOME GOOD QUALITY LESSONS AS THAT!! THANKS WE BECAME YOUR FAN FROM NOW ON!! REGARDS

  • Not bad, and I like the guy, he's got a friendly easy-going way about him.

But the only thing is, far as I know, Neil had all of the strings down either a half or whole step, as I recall. The key this man is playing the song in is for a girl or someone with a pretty high range. Just finished watching NY's version and he's singing lower. I could sing along no problem. Here? I'd be out of commision for a week or two. But nice video anyway.

  • What chord is 000320?

  • @M2TWG typo, obviously he means 000230

  • Thanks Steve I was already famil with most of Neils drop D songs but you added a few new cords to my vochab.

your a great instructer, keap it up. all take all the Neil I can get; and anything Jimi Page. Scott. Yes, we know older Neil solo acustic songs are tuned down half stepp. I think Steve already knows that!

  • really very helpful! Thanks man! (Note: I believe the chhord progression on the intro is as the other guy says).

  • whats the part right before the end right before the end harmonics? sounds like he goes up to 12 12 0 11 10 0, then 2 other chords. this is the only part i dont know. anyone know?? on the massey hall 71 version btw

  • whats the part right before the end right before the end harmonics? sounds like he goes up to 12 12 0 11 10 0, then 2 other chords. this is the only part i dont know. anyone know??

  • Ok sooooo Tuning is a whole step lower than directed in the video!! f(CGCFAC) Firstly THANKS for the chords they seem to be correct and like many others I have struggled to figure them out nice work. I know you mentioned your not a singer so why sing it? I can't watch this with the sound on sorry

  • @ifi808 he sings it cause it helps people understand the lyric/ chord relationship that brings the song together. also helps stop the negative feedback from those with room temperture IQ's that want to judge his ability to sing.

I cant read posts like yours without cringing with disappointment. Question, were you breastfed as a child ? Just

curious as its known to reduce intelligence and that could be your problem...just saying.

  • Correct, tuning is double dropped D then tune everything half step down C# a,d,g,b flat, C#

  • Stevetr, you have changed my life and the way I look at the guitar and Neil Young forever and for that I owe you a great debt of gratitude. This is my favourite song of all time and I've been trying to figure out how to play it for a long time. Never heard of double dropped tuning before but now I'm gonna use it to write songs. Big Love and respect to yourself and Neil. X

  • Thanks for the help

  • I always wondered how this was done ,im well happy now, well bleedin appy

  • Sorry, I meant double drop C.

  • Isn't this song in drop C?

  • That was really good. I play that number too, same tuning, but slightly differant chord shapes. I must have a go at playing it your way.

  • Neil Young ''IS'' Jesus

  • Steve, I love it! Just to hear that song makes me happy. Thanks for teaching me that!!

    You're a great teacher!

  • Can't you change the title of your uploads to be not be Neil Young? Maybe your own name?

  • tnx

  • Hey dude, thanks for the great lesson on Don't Let It Bring You Down...I'm a die hard Neil geek. I've worked a long time trying to figure this one out. Do you have any others in his open tuning? I'd love to see them if so...thank you again. This is a wonderful song.

  • im an intermediate player, pretty familiar with double drop D...but have never played a song in double drop C...can someone tell me if it is more difficult to get in into drop C, my tuner wont seem to let me go into CGCFAC

  • @nickfromCO if you use "harmonics" when tuning ,,,it will pick it up ,, {i have the same prob when tuning down way low } good luck

  • You are a Gentleman and a Scholar!

  • I'm going to shoot my mouth one more time here.

I was just thinking that actually this is a handy simplified version to play if one doesn't wish to completely retune their guitar for one song. The drop C tuning may be more accurate but this drop D I can see is going to convenient for me when I'm out busking or jamming with friends.

  • It's a nice approach, interesting and extremely well presented.

But in all honesty there's quite a few shortcuts and perhaps inaccuracies (if one wants to do it exactly like Neil Young)

But I think your approach is a great presentation for beginners and intermediate players; who want to learn this song and for them to get the feel of alternate tunings and chords.

  • Thanks. Great lesson,,,,,

  • your tuning is wrong its not a double Drop D, its a double drop C:

    CGCFAC.

  • @steblublu True that!

But then that's a whole other kettle of fish. Admittedly, there's alot of beautiful chords that come out of that tuning. It's alot of fun to explore.

Joni Mitchell ( who was a student of NY's) wrote alot of songs using the same variations.

  • Thanks for the inversions and tuning. Although I must add that the "C" chord is not a " C 9 " . That would have a b7 in it. It's called " C add 9 ". Not at all complaining. Just adding.

  • THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS!! Yes I also wish it was a tone lower but WOW my brain was exploding trying to figure it out myself..... Thanks heaps.

  • hah! you reckon you can't sing. I should post video of me sometime. You'll look like Neil Young in comparison. Thanks for the lesson.

  • wrong key

  • holly crap, horrible video quality, it could be harmful to your eyes, bye

  • thanks for this. appreciated!

  • Hey Steve,

I just found your video. Thank you very much. I liked when you said you don't know how Neil Young sings this an octave higher. Well, beside the fact he has developed that voice and worked for it for years, I guess he was born a horn, and he takes the whole guitar one tone lower (which is very enoying if I want to play with him). Shout away!

  • i play & yes different versions but i kike this thankyou for sharing !

  • Neil Young rarely used the same exact tuning(s) for every performance of this song over the years.

  • its in a full step down plus the double drop. you should have at least mentioned that

  • someone ought to find a way to play this song without tuning down and make a lesson on it

  • to sound like neil's guitar, tune to double dropped D, then every string goes down a whole step. for this song anyway. most of his others are in either dropped D or down a whole step or half step.

  • dude it says its tuned waaaay lower in live versions!!!!

  • I was looking for this, so thank you. It's great despite the video quality.

  • Hey Steve thanks for all the stuff you do your csny stuff has really got my jusies flowing

  • aka "D modal" tuning

  • great lesson! thanks for explain the chords.. thanks alot.

  • Every video cover should begin with a quick tutorial like yours. Thank you, Could you identify the last found chord in the song - 550060 please? Also, I found it alot easier to sing with the double d tuning one full step down as Neil plays it,

  • I think it's a G7

  • Thanks Bro, I found it tremedously useful epecially in the Dbl Drop D...Love it..peace

  • Thanks man this was a really great lesson cause sometimes neil young songs can bea bit difficult to play wokring with a tab alone.

  • video is fuzzy, though.

  • your singing is not that bad. only castles burning. oh well. thanks for the lessson. good job.

  • Excellent job of explaining how this song is played! Always wanted to learn this song and you've just made it easy. Great teaching. I'll break out "4 Way Street" now and be playing it like Neil in an hour. Thanks so much.

  • it's a C double drop tuning:

    CGCFAC

  • QFT...

    Most definitely is CGCFAC.

  • Yeah, I was about to say that it's definitely in C on the album...

  • need lessons?

  • The resolution is pretty bad but I got it. Thanks for the insight.

  • by the way..... don't sell yourself short on the vocals. I enjoyed it.

  • get a better camera

  • you're a Saint dude. Thanks so much!

    Johnny Saffire

  • on the record the whole guitar is tuned down to c, and then the two e strings are dropped a whole tone again i think! am i wrong?

  • thanks man. appreciate it.

  • On the intro and the interlude between the verses, the chord progression goes: 000320, 032010, 000320, 333010 (x2).

    It's NOT: 000320, 032010, 000320, 032010 (x2) as you're suggesting.

  • I think you have your 2s and 3s a bit mixed up

  • Yes, I did ... but the point is that it goes to the F instead of the C as you suggest.

  • Tks mate. Your lesson is awesome. I tried to post a vid response but it didn't seem to work. I'm a beginner and I'm sure I play it wrong but your video was a huge help. Thanks again,

    Cheers,

  • i write the tabs....awesome

  • Comment removed

  • i thgough that this was CGCFAC......i found the tabs for the song on net....

  • it is, thats the tuning he used in massey hall performance

  • Good lesson, would be nice if you'd redo it to get better focus.

  • great teacher, need a better camera though.

  • thanks for this. I will use this.

btw, whaddyermean you're not a singer? you sing great!

  • Very nice! Perfect strumming, so perfect strumming that I request that you make another video explaining how exactly to do it for those of us who can get the muting down. Please and thanks!

  • sei un ciuccio ...nn si accordano al re la prima e la sesta corda,ma al do...

  • hai ragione perche tutta l'accordatura va 1 tono sotto

in realtà è un C double drop

  • So I need to tune my guitar to drop D tuning, or can I leave it standard?

  • original tune is C double drop

  • that is great but what are the chords you play for the last "dont let it bring you down?" the video is a little grainy, I cant tell. Its probably just me not seeing it. Other than that Thank You. This is one of my favorites. Always has been.

    -Mike

  • Looks like he went to 5th fret on the 6th and 5th strings and the 6th fret on the 2nd string. I really like this version. Got a nice sound to it. -Mason

  • That was Great! I used to play this song in standard tuning but now I have the actual chord shapes for double dropped D.

The same shapes work in dropped standard double C but I like playing in D. Thank you so much and keep posting these guitar lessons, it's very appreciated.

  • The recorded version is in double dropped C tuning.

  • how do you double dropped C tuning?
