I’m a pure southerner! Born, raised and currently residing in Alabama. I think your shrimp n’ grits recipe is one of the best I’ve ever tried! You’re welcome in my Southern kitchen anytime!
grits, oh my! love it! hoisin sauce is good stuff if you want a little sweetness to the shrimp, this is for sure step any cook should do. I'll have to try this!!
I just made shrimp over Ricotta ravioli with kielbasa on the side and my three cheese mix of Mozzarella, provolone and Parmesan over everything with a little salt, pepper and oregano. I love a good shrimp recipe. Thanks again Chef John! I'll try this one in a few days! Good job!
thank you chef john, for your videos on the shrimp & grits. and all your cooking videos. it make it so much easier for me to try each one. you have made me feel like a real chef lol. By the way. I'm getting ready to try the shimps & grits this morning. wishing you all the best. ( kiss my grits. lord i love it.
The only place tail on a shrimp has its place is on a shrimp cocktail! When serving shrimp hot please PLEASE!! remove the tails...its just messy to eat!...btw this looks good! Maybe more cream and red pepper :D
Not authentic S&G but looks delicious just the same. I will have to try your recipe. I love your recipes and videos, I could watch them all day. You should make a DVD. :)
I can't believe I just joined a website to be able to vote for you... but I did, without even questioning it. I feel like I owe it to you-- your videos have made me a better cook, and a more popular human. So, thanks, and good luck!
@paullees557104 Basically Grits are grains if that makes since. When you buy them they are dry then you boil them in water an they become thick an creamy an you can dress them up any way you like. Grits are a lot like Oat meal. Thick, hardy an they tick to your stomach keeping you full for a very long time lol
@livesimply70 I never had grits before. But I guess you could substitute farina. Same thing except it's ground wheat instead of corn. Looks the same anyway. What do you think?
@TheRabidPosum hi! i'm not familiar with farina. i do know that grits can be a substitute for rice in that it's a filling carb-rich food that is good with flavorful, seasoned gravies and sauces served over it. in some african cultures, grits (called by many different names) are prepared the same way and almost always served with a spicy sauce or meat. in the south (U.S.), we eat them mostly for breakfast with eggs and sausage, but we also enjoy them as main dinner dishes like in this video. :)
@livesimply70 You never had farina (cream of wheat)? Wow, north and south seem to still have differences lol. Well up here, although it's not as huge as grits in the south, is exclusively a breakfast cerial, like oatmeal. Thick, rich, creamy, hearty, fix it anyway you like. Usually topped with, maple syrup, honey, brown sugar, fruit. Funny you mention eggs and sausage, that's usually what I make it with, but simple just a little butter, milk, and sugar.
@livesimply70 I would be courious to here from anyone who is familiar with both to see it there is a big difference. I notice 1 big difference in the cooking. Farina cooks FAST, about a minute. Once you add it to the boiling water you have to stand over it and keep stiring fast, or it will stick and get lumps. You can't walk away. And you don't want to let it sit, you have to serve it right away or it will get gelatanised and rubbery.
@MalkavianHand It has been a while since I've read On Food and Cooking but I believe dairy products with a higher milk fat content don't curdle as easily.
I like this recipe. EXCEPT, I did something different. For the sauce. I added a little bit of brandy and reduced of course. And I think it turned out great. Added a really nice smooth sweetness to the sauce.
"And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:"
@derekdb2 Anything without a neck shouldn't be eaten also - which means bacon is also a problem.
But later on in the new testament I think, it did say that anything blessed with prayer is fine to eat. I don't know where the quotes are, but it did indeed say this. But then again it's really personal interpretation that makes the difference.
"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."

@TheApple128k I use the corn meal in place of farina or cream of wheat when I feel like having hot cereal..try it it's so good. cook it like you would cream of wheat or grits. I use both yellow and white corn for the hot cereal.
@splitza -Polenta is very similar. It is made from ground yellow corn. Grits are made from ground corn as well. The white grits he is speaking of is made from ground hominy. I am sure the recipe could be made with either and still taste wonderful.
