You seem to have so many art experts pontificating about what real art is. i.e., form ,content , color and paint handling. one would think that so much technical expertise and talent and over 30 years of actual producing and showing art works that someone would have actually heard of them?? You may hate scnabel, but at least got up off the couch and didi something with his limited time on this planet unlike you dumb asses . do something!
It is a real pity: with a little less self-satisfaction, he could have been a great painter. The act of smudging paint on ancient maps does not qualify as "drawing" in my opinion, especially if you do it while filmed by "60 Minutes", dressed in blazer and bermuda that you are careful not to stain with paint...
well, not the best work he did. Lots of his best work is acting to u in proportions, textures, mass, relating to u and the space surrounding it. Those qualities dont seem to be present here. Flat as a pancake-art. Sorry for Julian. But in the 80's he was undefeatable!
Should have shown a little more restraint and left the paint alone. What, did he do all these the night before? What junk. No color sense . No sense of form. If it weren't for the maps there would be nothing there at all. Good filmmaker though.
The art is quite cool, but i only watched the video so i could see the receptionist at the desk--she is MY KID! Wish the camera had lingered longer on the front desk!
"I frequently click on James Kalm, whose absurdist ad-libbed recitative, hushed but informed off-screen commentary and jiggling hand-held camera are tantamount to an ongoing act of performance art."
- Steve Kaplan on James Kalm, in the comments at Artworld Salon.
Stay tuned, I just visited Chris's studio for a special two part interview and tour (Chris is also a serious collector). This is in preparation for his upcoming show at Mitchell, Inness & Nash Jan. 26.
Thanks so much for this as a document! Your commentary and the mini-interviews within really make this a great insight...I have GOT to see these works in person!
Just wondering if anyone has connected Schnabels work to F.Jameson's writings on art/film and cognitive mapping? Kalm, thanks for getting close so that the bleeding through could be seen.
Reverential timbre, Mister K. From this vantage, there simply wasn't enough text for me to indulge in. Occasionally I enjoy your commentary more than the show presented. This, an example. I visited the grave today of a young 7-11 clerk abducted and murdered in a corn field. The Virgin M beside the marker had lost her head to vandals. The snow had crusted and nearly supported my weight.
Just out of curiosity, what sort of price tags did these babies have on them? As always thanks for bringing us these awesome views into the New York artworld!
they didn't have the prices listed on the gallery guide (a violation of New York State law), and I couldn't even estimate. But, like they say, if you gotta ask...
i'm so glad you put this up; mr. schnabel is a lightning rod for so much art world jealousy and with the strong market such antagonism is back (it never left).nice show and i saw his new movie, quite powerful stuff. thanks mr. kalm!
Nice video. Thank you for this gift.

Julian Schnabel...If only his art were as good as his ego is inflated...Could someone deflate the latter and make the former better?

WHOOPEE,
Thanks for the heads up Martin. At least now we know there are three of us watching.
Steve is an old friend, I tease him, but he's appeared in several of the "Kalm Reports". Let's see if the post my reply, thanks JK

Addendum,
Spoke with some one who should know, said the average "drawing" was sixty grand, less discounts, forty-five to fifty. JK
