Bravo; brilliant and in my opinion a UNIQUE achievement for a twelve year old.
However a minor cricism, the coda (final two pages) is really too fast. Despite this he brings it off.
This tendency to play too fast is a characeristic of many of modern pianists, mainly the young who like to show off. I can play this quickly, therefore I will even if the result may do a disservice to the music.
I am also 12 years old right now (I am using my little brother's account to give this comment.) and I am also practicing it right now. He must be 15-16 years old. I want to know some techniques how to play this.
@KingDollaDolla no he MUST not be, and no one cares if you re 12 or 92 man
there is no technique to play this, it's a combination of many things and at 12 years old if you speak the truth you can't master all this alone and you shouldn't try, your teacher is ok with you playing this piece?... don't be over eager to play difficult pieces
learn HOW TO play without stressing your arms, then work your way up... probably you re TOO YOUNG both physically and mentally to acomplish this without a cost

Ingmar is truly gifted of God. This is evidenced by his flawless technique and exhaustive mastery of his repertoire at only 12 years. Many a renowned pianist would be hard pressed to deliver like this. Ingmar must also realize that the glory belongs to God and he is to acknowledge Him in the reflection of it. Genius is not co-incidental or fortuitious, but points towards an intelliegent design. May God continue to bless him as he walks in His purpose.
i agree with u on some level but shouldnt credit also go to hard work, dedication and positive influences(teachers family friends fans) around him? of course God is in control of all the factors that have made this boy an excellent prodigy, but "give the glory to God is too broad a statement" he after all has to do the work with the talent he was given so he and his
I agree God is in control of all factors. However, you must be aware that there are starving children in the Sudan and Angola dying by the thousands. Others are musically deficient through no fault or control of their own. Therefore, let Ingmar thank God for good teachers, innate ability and opportunities to maximize his potential. In giving God the Glory, further blessings will follow him. It will in no way detract but add to his statute.
God has absolutely nothing to do with this young mans talent. He's obviously very intelligent and practices many hours a day, which in turn has led to his mastery of the instrument. Your notion of "God" pales in comparison to what this kids fingers are accomplishing.

It has been sped up at the end - and tonality can be corrected through a low pass filter - you can examine and compare the way his head and upper torso move prior to, and during, the accelaration - markedly different.
en ÚLTIMA PARTE SE RE NOTA QUE HAN ACELERADO EL VIDEO..mucho estudio pero carece de destreza, es un niño, igualmente... marciano (Very nice, but what about te speed Up in the last part???haha is totally clear that who put the video wanted to show it perfect, but no, he is human, a kid, we all human, even the best pianist have common mistakes, all have mistakes, and he hadn´t the power and the enought speed to arrive great in the last part... the VIDEO WAS ACCELERATED, is so OBVIOUS)
sadly is possible its called pitch shift correcting and it can be done using Melodyne u can now change the sound of every not played in a sample and melodyne knows what note is what its pretty amazing go check it out on youtube.
I just threw that out there. I know Bach never played anything by Beethoven; but you took the bait. Anyway, Gennip plays piano like a harpsichord, and does well with Scarlatti, Bach and Mozart. His Beethoven sounds like what it would if JSBach were at the keyboard.
Beethoven played serious Mozart, no record of Mozart playing anything by Beethoven.
Later musicians, Schumann, Liszt, Brahams mostly played their own stuff. Rachmaninoff and that ilk are recorded and we know what they sound like.
Musically this coda should be played rapidly; this however is played at the limit of human synapse firing. Admittedly it was written as a bravura piece for Ludwig himself who probably destroyed the Broadwood, nevertheless much is gained by restraining the speed impulse just a trifle, controlling the pedal, the metre, the anarchy inherent in a passage run loose.
No, Mozart never played this. Bach however, did and you can watch the performance by Serg van Gennip outdoors with damn near no pedal.
Mozart studied composition with Johann Christian Bach in London, son of the great Johann Sebastian Bach. Petie32 never said which Bach played it so you can either be wrong or right. In any case, who gives a shit ! This is a great performance!
This is quite wonderful. Youth may lack experience, but in compensation it brings conviction and commitment and a fiery energy (though Ingmar is lyrically delicate when needed). I'll stick my neck out and suggest that Beethoven would have loved this performance, just as I do.
The passage at 2:07 is not truly all that difficult. But Ingmar executes the final Presto page with superb aplomb. I would be happy to take his version to my desert island. He has my sincere thanks.
I agree - that's absolutely true. But it's just confidence, isn't it? Just close your eyes and go for it. If Ingmar can do it at age 12, all older players really ought to have a shot at it. You have to think the music, not the physical leaps. (But OK, it's not quite that simple! I often struggle too. Well done, Ingmar!)
Ive practiced this movement for about a year, yet I still can't get it played evenly. Example @2:07, or whenever the left and right hand play at the same time 16th notes..This is amazing.
The ending seems real the sound really doesn't change... the keys seem to be reacting normal. I don't think someone would be that low to speed up a video. most people are threatened at the end of this passionata. Most people play it slow. most play it fast and faster then others. others try to bring out more dynamics. I picture it should be played as loud as possible because it is the ending climax and should be treated as such. this is pretty extremely good. I say good work.
You are crazy. If the video is sped up, then the sound cannot match the action. He actually is playing faster than your eye (via the camera) can follow. The video is real. Get over your cynicism!
It's unbelievable the speed in which you performed! It's remarkable, although one has to think that speed isn't everything! There were parts were you played it too quickly. It's that gentle subtleness were you find masters. You played it amazing, you even gave me goosebumps.
Very good! One doesn't expect to see such good performance in a kid. If he keeps working like this may become the next Arrau. Great technique. I really enjoyed it.
I am a classical pianist with conservatory training from the Manhattan School of music and this is one of the most incredible performances I have seen of this movement. I am responding to you because as I was watching him, Arrau entered my mind..lol. And when I saw your comment, I just had to respond. He looked like a mini version of Arrau sitting on that stage. I would love to see him go places.
let's see you do better at this age ;) Obviously he will grow and mature as a pianist with age, but you cannot deny that he is very good. So I'm not quite sure of your reply to me Pianist
Very nice. My only problem is that someone shamelessly fast forwarded the 4:05-4:40 part. The swaying at supersonic speed and the fingers magically skipping frames is way too obvious. I realize that the coda is the hardest section of the sonata but dont start cheating to show off on youtube. Post the original video.
not true - if you look at his clothes, they move the same amount throughout the entire thing meaning the gravity is constant meaning that is just him swaying supersonically. The fingers skipping frames is because it is a very difficult, fast part - 64th notes vs. 30fps camera - you do the math
Does anyone know moonlight third movement? For those who lnow it, don't you think that appassionata 3rd looks like moonlight 3rd movement? I mean in the construction. There are the same parts.
I thought about that, too. Whoever gave your posting a minus one is probably a religious zealot with a closed mind.
The proof that the last portion was NOT put into faster motion is that the pitch remains true to the notes. If you speed up the film, the pitch goes up. it does not in this video!!!
Maybe we have Vladimir Horowitz back with us again. I think VH instead of Artur Rubinstein, but after adolescence the poetry could make him another AR.
To play a convincing performance of a difficult Beethoven Sonata at any age, is enviable and to play that, so easily is admirable..Good Luck be with this gifted pianist....
;) merci beaucoup,
He play like a MIDI. Too mechanical, too pedal, lacks of interpretation. And, of course, it's absolutely too fast. I would listen him playing 2nd mvt... I imagine it :(
On other side, this mvt require hands bigger than 12yo's hands.
Please don't insult me. I recognize the talent and all (or close to all) notes are right. But if I was the teacher, I suggest him to play other pieces, for now.
who do you think you are? He's only twelve years old why don't you play and let someione video you. Please don't insult you? You're asking to be insulted
i agree with you but at the same time with bugsbugs0 or...are those gs or qs...yeah because he is very mechanical but while his interpretation reflects his age his precision is far beyond his age
This talent is refreshing. As he grows in wisdom and maturity, I hope he doesn't listen to anyone who tells him to "emote more". There are enough professionals out there who use gross facial distortions and piano bench calisthenics to express music while they play. UGH. I hope this kid works hard to keep his ego in check, too. If he can, I can easily see a career as long lasting as Rubenstein's. A++ great job.
Ah ! ! ! An amazing talent, far beyond his phsycial age. He is incredibly expressive WITHOUT the extraneous gesturing that characterizes so many of the 'professional' pianists of today. His accuracy is really impressive. Don't ever change, Ingmar, and I'll be your biggest fan forever.
I agree with your assessment, OrganMan. But I saw in another video his young face doing some gesturing. Hard to see at the angle that he is usually captured. Hopefully you won't have to drop your appreciation for this talent if he starts cutting more faces later on.
i'd say this piece sounds great played by most great pianists. besides technique, nothing much can go wrong with this piece. lazar plays it very well indeed, but i'm more curious to hear him play something more musically challenging.
????wtf???? you can't be serious. like what? something more musically challenging? all i ever heard is people butcher this piece. this kid is extraordinarly musical and he likely would play anything beautifully.
I think there are very few truly great performances of this piece. Richter has one and Solomon has another. Lazar isn't quite in their class yet, but may well be one day. Keep up the good work, Lazar!
I cant believe someone so young can play this as well as some of the profesionals out there; if not better than some of them. I could, and would, listen to this recorded as music to just listen to. I cant believe hes not not famous yet! This is a really hard piece, and hes practically mastered it. The end is a bit out of control, but regardless Im amazed by this. It would take me years and years to play this as well as him.
In general needs to pay closer attention to minor (but important for someone as talented as you) details in piece.
Very beginning needs to be more subtle.
Some chords (esp repeated ones) need to be less robotic.
Occasionally LH/RH balance is a little off.
The ending seems too fast. You need to loosen your forearm a bit more.
Again, much potential and obvious talent. May need more professional teacher to 'tidy up' performance. Can be 9.5/10 in my books (1st class professional).
very nice .. hopefully the tens of thousands of hours of practice won't sap his ability to emote later in life. i don't get the impression that he's a pianist out of his own free will. not that his talent shouldn't be fully developed.. it's just hard to get the right balance of "life" and dedication
Bravo; brilliant and in my opinion a UNIQUE achievement for a twelve year old.
However a minor cricism, the coda (final two pages) is really too fast. Despite this he brings it off.

When we accelerate a video, tonality changes. So, it isn't possible :)

sadly is possible its called pitch shift correcting and it can be done using Melodyne u can now change the sound of every not played in a sample and melodyne knows what note is what its pretty amazing go check it out on youtube.

Rachmaninoff and that ilk are recorded and we know what they sound like.

the movement of his left hand is just unreal! he looks like 8 or nine fingers on the left hand in some of the passages.
anonymousQ45 2 years ago
Musically this coda should be played rapidly; this however is played at the limit of human synapse firing. Admittedly it was written as a bravura piece for Ludwig himself who probably destroyed the Broadwood, nevertheless much is gained by restraining the speed impulse just a trifle, controlling the pedal, the metre, the anarchy inherent in a passage run loose.
No, Mozart never played this. Bach however, did and you can watch the performance by Serg van Gennip outdoors with damn near no pedal.
petie32 2 years ago
Since Bach died before Mozart was even alive, let alone Beethoven, I doubt that he played it....
Magia122 2 years ago 2

He has my sincere thanks.

the right hand 8va leap is hard to keep rhythme with the left
anonymousQ45 3 years ago
I agree - that's absolutely true. But it's just confidence, isn't it? Just close your eyes and go for it. If Ingmar can do it at age 12, all older players really ought to have a shot at it. You have to think the music, not the physical leaps. (But OK, it's not quite that simple! I often struggle too. Well done, Ingmar!)

I say good work.

that is definitely fast forwarded at 405..no doubt.
still well done, for whats not fast forwarded

Very nice. My only problem is that someone shamelessly fast forwarded the 4:05-4:40 part. The swaying at supersonic speed and the fingers magically skipping frames is way too obvious. I realize that the coda is the hardest section of the sonata but dont start cheating to show off on youtube. Post the original video.
vovik875 3 years ago
It is a live recording. I understand that is much easier for you to say when you are not able to do that it is something wrong with the others.
klodomyr 3 years ago
not true - if you look at his clothes, they move the same amount throughout the entire thing meaning the gravity is constant meaning that is just him swaying supersonically. The fingers skipping frames is because it is a very difficult, fast part - 64th notes vs. 30fps camera - you do the math

CMDeon 4 years ago 2
Ah ! ! ! An amazing talent, far beyond his phsycial age. He is incredibly expressive WITHOUT the extraneous gesturing that characterizes so many of the 'professional' pianists of today. His accuracy is really impressive. Don't ever change, Ingmar, and I'll be your biggest fan forever.
organman52 4 years ago
I agree with your assessment, OrganMan. But I saw in another video his young face doing some gesturing. Hard to see at the angle that he is usually captured. Hopefully you won't have to drop your appreciation for this talent if he starts cutting more faces later on.

i'd say this piece sounds great played by most great pianists. besides technique, nothing much can go wrong with this piece. lazar plays it very well indeed, but i'm more curious to hear him play something more musically challenging.
