Wish more musical films were produced nowdays ! Dont have a Busby round anymore ! These films were the basis for all the Moulin Rouges and Chicagos of today .Dont know were you get these clips but you are a Genius for enlightening the young folks seeing this now ! And for that i must Say THANKS !
Thank You for posting this Eddie Cantor Gem...He had so much talent it's a wonder he didn't explode !! He made the world a better place because he was in it.
Eddie's name could have been Bugs O'Malley, and he still would have been "Old Banjo Eyes", loved by millions in spite of their obvious racial flaws! My Jewish mother taught me a joke. "ABCD Goldfish? LMNO Goldfish! OSAR too, AB! Laugh at the idiot biggots and they will dissolve in their own acid. Stupidity can never stand laughter anymore than stupidity can stand scrutinity. Eddie was a gift.
One of Cantor better numbers and great song. To flakyface, Sam Goldwyn was Sam GOLDFISH not Goldfarb. He was a glove salesman and to part of producer Selwyn's name.
This clip well illustrates Eddie's confidence and talents, his singing and facial expressions never fail to make you laugh, he is without doubt one of the best entertainers in history.
@matinchiu He was one of the great talents of early sound (and colour) cinema, and, will be so remembered. How he ever got the girl, I can only imagine.
@flakyace i didnt mean it as racist,, im jewish,, just wanted people to know that we have contributed much to entertainment and hopefully not forget our contribution,,, thats all.. sorry for the misunderstanding...
He was quite the talent. His movies don't get a lot of play on TCM because of his blackface routines (Whoopee, The Kid from Spain, Roman Scandals, etc...)
"Swanson... She's jealous of Swanson... And not only Swanson... But Clara Bow!" (Hey, somebody tell the guy who directed the movies "Chicago" and "Nine" to make one of THESE!!! LOL)
@GrenvilleT I was trying to think who could do that scene in the present era and the only name that springs to mind is Jim Carrey and he's not known for being musical.
would anyone know where or how to find a Cantor number, something about Falling Down? I can't get more specific because it's been so darn long. I just happen to catch it once here on YT, and silly me I didn't make note of it. Maybe it was, All Fall Down or I Fall Down??
I also agree with folks here. Cantor was the limit. He had no peers. Always loved him. He sparkled. Notice he could do dance moves without grabbing his lower half and passing it off as talent.
Yes, Yes! Florenz ZIEGFELD Jr. was a real Genius because he was behind many Great Stars such as Eddie Cantor, Ruth Etting, Fred Astaire, Norma Shearer, Will Rogers, Fannie Brice, Leon Erroll, Marilyn Miller, Bert Williams, Gloria Swanson, and many more. Thank you very much, worth an appreciation.
the super Eddie Cantor from PALMY DAYS (1931), one his best films... also with "There's Nothing Too Good for My Baby" and "Bend Down, Sister." That's Charlotte Greenwod in the kaboose.
Lovely film, pure Goldwyn and Cantor. Whole film a marvellous excuse for Cantor routines! Pity other early Eddie Cantor films are so difficult to see these days. The opening scenes in the bakery are eye popping Busby Berkeley at his very best.!
Cantor was just about the greatest entertainer who ever lived. During his era, Al Jolson was probably his closest competitor, but Jolson's work doesn't translate quite as well on film. The film from which this clip was taken, "Palmy Days," has been downloaded by somebody on YouTube. They just don't make entertainers like this anymore. I can't get enough of Eddie Cantor.
This is marvelous all around. Eddie Cantor and Busby Berkeley at their best.
Know anything about the band? Hollywood studio orchestras of this era tended to sound stiff on hot number compared to the name bands, but this group is great!
I think the credit to bringing out the best was due to Eddie himself where due to the extreme control Eddie was able to wield during this era, he most certainly had favorite players he worked with along the way pulling from New York and Hollywood but the baton and orchestration itself was handed to Raymond Heindorf, whom Eddie entrusted through his most important films.
I saw a version with the ending having Eddie Cantor singing to Charlotte Greenwood "Check book, have you got a check book, I wan't to know ...", and she responds "Yes, yes .. " and Eddie with " I'm glad she said yes, yes ... instead of no, no!"
what a great entertainer, with fine musical accompanyment to a good tune. it's charming to hear references in old songs back then to contemporary celebrities, long-forgotten now, like Gloria Swanson and Clara Bow.
Thanks so much for your comment. It means a lot for I can not tell you how long Aspen Entertainment spent separating the Tuba bass and bringing it back without distorting the rest of the orchestra and I agree with you about this catchy tune. Oh...Eddie Cantor and girls..I love it in any form.
What a number!!..."She's jealous of Swanson, and not only Swanson, but Clara Bow..."... (What a tribute to both!)

WOW! A thought just came to me....
I'll bet Paul Rubens' "Pee-Wee Herman" character was chanelling Eddie Cantor!
I mean, look at all the childish mannerisms coupled with the (very) adult double entendres.

We're on the same page here. You've got a grip on the situation. Eddie Cantor was great, but I really miss Pee-Wee.

Thank you for the info. Just wondering if you mean that you have a 16mm print of this?
I sure wished that they would release films such as this, instead of movies where everyone is blown up, tortured, or gored.
Such good entertainment!

among the Goldwyn Girls in this number (and in this film): Betty Grable, Virginia Grey, Paulette Goddard, and Toby Wing.
btw, Cantor and Clara Bow co-starred in the film adaptation of his BWay hit 'Kid Boots' in 1926.
