Nice build. I'm an engineering student, and i'd like to do this sometime when i'm out of school. It's amazing how many people have posted ignorant comments regarding how transmissions work in an EV. I hope more people get educated in how these vehicles work, because they're much better designs than the vehicles we drive now, it's only been battery technology that has held back the EV through the years.
You start of in a gas car in first but the same isnt true on a EV. The motor is always the same so you dont need to build speed to get to second gear. You can start in 6th if you feel like it.
I usually start off in 1st gear. I thought it was odd when you said most people don't, they start in 2nd. I don't know, maybe they do, but I've been driving a a stick all my life, and I almost always start in 1st. Just saying.
uh yeah, i think you are right. i always start in first, in a slow winding curve i might go down to second and leave it in second, but he was at dead stops.
It's an electric. their minimum rpm is 0 -- not like an ICE which has an idle rpm. the way a transmission works in an EV is VASTLY different from combustion engines.
I drive a 99 zx2 gas obviously the sound your hearing when in 2nd is just like if i start in 2nd and just let go of the clutch, its called knocking the electric motor doesn't have enough torque to pull in 2nd smoothly, you have to play with the clutch to do that.
UnbeliEVable! ZX2 Love! The issues of the second gear start are most likely due to motor mount format, if you have any. You probably might not need such a margin of damping when working with a smoother, electric motor; however, off the line, you have such torque available that this movement may upset the differential, which might be responsible for any future noise while turning. Again: WOW!
g'day mate! sounds like a cv joint noise to me! if it happens when you turn left going forwards it is normally the right hand outer cv joint! hope this helps mate! cheers
I have a zx2 I will pay to convert my car.

The vibration occurred when you turned left, not right.

you are great but we are missing the famous EV grin, lighten up!!!

the brakes problem is cos you lake a vacuum pump google it and its easy to mount.

electric motors do not knock. Look at torque curves for electric motors. EV's are completely different. most only have one or two gears.

Let your amp meter be your guide. Drive in such a way as to use the least amount of amps. Many of the conversions I've seen don't have a tach.

What was the silly mistake so others don't make it.

Did the ICE have a front motor mount? The FWD Chryslers I have have a mount that goes from the transmission/motor to under the radiator.
Without it, the motor rocks back and forth. You might need to fabricate one.

pretty cool, too bad you can't pull out in 2nd gear. maybe the extra torque from pulling out in 2nd is causing a drive shaft to go out of allignment?
