I think Alex Smith is fully capable of starting. He went 7-9 in 2006 without any good recievers, and now he has Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Jason Hill, Michael Crabtree and Brandon Jones. He finally has recievers who can separate themselves from DB's and make plays. They could very well be the playmakers at reciever he's needed. That's just my opinion tho.

Hill lost to JT too. Every beat writers consensus is that is that the 2008 qb "competition" was rigged anyway. JT got virtually every significant practice rep and preseason start in training camp that year after the first week and beyond. He also had a full year head start with Martz in Detroit.

He looked impressive his second year, and if norv turner stayed there, he probably would have been a top 10 quarterback by now. dude that was like one problem with martz but other than that, he completely turned our offense around. 3rd in the league for most plays 20+ yards. Everytime we got the ball, I expected us to score a touchdown. Everytime it was 3rd and 10, I expected us to get a 1st down. U saw how quick we got down to field goal range to kick the winning fg against the redskins. I said right before that drive, we'll get the ball down there in plenty of time.
49ers will be a shit ton better next year. As long as we make a good draft choice with our frist and second round draft picks. Preferably O and D line. David Baas and Eric Heiltman are good but we need more protection. I think that if Smith comes back next year he should sit out the first couple of games to let us see if Hill can keep it up. 7-3 as a starter. Thats pretty good. Plus we have Mike Singletary my favorite coach to lead us. We'll do better than .500 and probably win the west.

I know I agree with you. He had a good season in 2006 and in 2007 injured most the time. In 2005 he was put in too early and he had no one good on the team bad o line and recivers. I am pretty sure he will be with the team in 2009 since hes willing to take a pay cut. 49ers don't have Marts anymore who thinks jon kitna and J.T O'sullivan are the best QBs ever so thats good.... But Shaun Hill is solid so it will probaly be Hill or Smith whos the starter in 09.Lets just hope Alex doesnt get injured

u got 3 good line men there, staley allen and heitman, jennings was always injured, thats why i didnt include him, there defense was actually really good, but as u know, if the offense dont stay on the field too long, ur defense would get tired, now, i aint saying the niners are going to be a play off contender this year, this is the final rebuilding season..

It just goes to what I said a moment ao, name one QB that is drafted one who does not have the support to let him grow. All I am reading is that he does not read Defenses. I think he can. Why do you feel this way? Tell me what is it about Alex that makes you want to down degrade him.

people give him a hard time.. hes not great but i see he is pretty good. hes improved, starting very young with huge exspectations and with injuries soon after. when its all said and done i know he will have more touch downs than interceptions.. . hes handled himself very well too...in his prime i can even see him making the pro bowl if healthy with improving san fran 9ers

He has withstood a lot of scrutiny and manage to hold it together. I give him a lot of credit as their is no denying his character. The guy will get better if he can stay healthy and their are no more major managerial changes in the near future

I am so certain that since your a Gator fan that Tim Tebow will be a leader in the league also huh. I mean as a leader you have to earn the respect. Just because your a quarterback you are not an automatic leader. He has to prove it. He has had a bad start to his career, but we can see where it goes. Thats all I got to say about that.

i also see alot of potential in nate davis from ball state... to put up his numbers with little talent around him is a good thing
the only reason nate davis slipped was because of his learning dissability and if that doesnt become a problem than he should be pretty good

I think Alex Smith is fully capable of starting. He went 7-9 in 2006 without any good recievers, and now he has Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Jason Hill, Michael Crabtree and Brandon Jones. He finally has recievers who can separate themselves from DB's and make plays. They could very well be the playmakers at reciever he's needed. That's just my opinion tho.

yeah i mean the 49ers have a lot of good things going their way shaun hill's silenced his critics that despite not having a rocket arm like peyton manning,he has a very good knowledge of the game and frank gore finally has two good running backs who can provide him with more resting time and most importantly,the 49ers revamped their o-line but the gaping holes to me is the defense their secondary clements is not good enough to be getting $10 million a year get good dbs and the 49ers will be good

Alex Smith needs an OC that is a perfectionist like Martz or Turner. The niners dont do ANYTHING to help this poor guy out. I mean atleast the Raiders went out and got one of the best QB coaches out there in Hackett and have 2 incredible OL coaches helping him out. I am EXTREMELY scared about hiring Tollner though!!!
Smith needs a change of scenery, maybe the Dolphins because they have a GREAT offensive coaching staff and an Emphasis on the OL.

Hill lost to JT too. Every beat writers consensus is that is that the 2008 qb "competition" was rigged anyway. JT got virtually every significant practice rep and preseason start in training camp that year after the first week and beyond. He also had a full year head start with Martz in Detroit.
This preseason will be a real competition.

I'm a packers fan and am happy with aaron rodgers, but I think Alex Smith can still be very good in this league. He looked impressive his second year, and if norv turner stayed there, he probably would have been a top 10 quarterback by now. But I think the lack of a consistent coordinator has definitely hurt him. Read this interview transcript with florida coach urban meyer about alex smith before the draft, and what he says you should do with alex is exactly what the 49ers haven't done

I agree. Plus, I have to look at the head coach and blame him for Alex's lack of progress in the NFL. Alex knows his body better, yet Nolan decided to put him in injured. While I agree with the majority of fellow Niner fans and say Hill should start, Singletary should work with Smith to make him a better leader on the field

First, he was only 20 when drafted and honestly was not worthy of the first pick but went to our lowsy team in 05. 06 he has a respectable year, his only fair year IMO. 07 he started off slow but still had a 2-1 record before getting hurt. Smith still has alot to prove, but still has upside IMO.. Back to the collinsworth comment,

dude that was like one problem with martz but other than that, he completely turned our offense around. 3rd in the league for most plays 20+ yards. Everytime we got the ball, I expected us to score a touchdown. Everytime it was 3rd and 10, I expected us to get a 1st down. U saw how quick we got down to field goal range to kick the winning fg against the redskins. I said right before that drive, we'll get the ball down there in plenty of time.

That was NOT the only problem with Martz.
- Failed to protect the QB
- Inexcusable amount of turnovers, regardless of QB. Usually due to sacks.
- Fails to utilize TE, despite previous comments stating otherwise.
- Passes even with a lead. (Caused loss to Eagless...)
- Low Time of Posession
- Too egotistical to change philosophies. (Stubborn)

49ers will be a shit ton better next year. As long as we make a good draft choice with our frist and second round draft picks. Preferably O and D line. David Baas and Eric Heiltman are good but we need more protection. I think that if Smith comes back next year he should sit out the first couple of games to let us see if Hill can keep it up. 7-3 as a starter. Thats pretty good. Plus we have Mike Singletary my favorite coach to lead us. We'll do better than .500 and probably win the west.

Cmon now, Smith never had an o-line or decent wr and still had a decent year where he went 7-9, which was our best season since Garcia was with us. I think it would be fair to give him a chance to run Martz's offense. He also said hes willing to take a pay cut, he has no choice but its nice to see hes wants to work things out. I still think he can better than Hill, if given another chance.

I know I agree with you. He had a good season in 2006 and in 2007 injured most the time. In 2005 he was put in too early and he had no one good on the team bad o line and recivers. I am pretty sure he will be with the team in 2009 since hes willing to take a pay cut. 49ers don't have Marts anymore who thinks jon kitna and J.T O'sullivan are the best QBs ever so thats good.... But Shaun Hill is solid so it will probaly be Hill or Smith whos the starter in 09.Lets just hope Alex doesnt get injured

Agreed. Hill will be the starting QB going into training camp. I do hope Smith comes back because he still has potential to be the future. If he doesn't, then oh well but I would love to see him come back and see what he can do after a year of sitting/IR.

u got 3 good line men there, staley allen and heitman, jennings was always injured, thats why i didnt include him, there defense was actually really good, but as u know, if the offense dont stay on the field too long, ur defense would get tired, now, i aint saying the niners are going to be a play off contender this year, this is the final rebuilding season..
