Wouldnt recomend ever doing this again this is one of the most poisenous snake in the world amd the most deadly in central and south america. Get bit by this snake and you go into shock then the venom starts destroying orgams such as your heart liver and kidneys as well as doing a number on your veins and arteries. Get bit out in the wild and your going to die no question about it
You are the epitome of mentally defunct. These snakes can strike long enough to snap you on the wrist, at which point (as many below me have said) you would have died a slow and agonizing death.
In that heat, with that degree of humidity, and as far away from civilization as I presume you were, a bite from that Fer de Lance would have been fatal, and excruciating. So keep poking it with a stick there, Ace.
Y'know, I'm not a big fan of snakes or anything...but if I spotted an incredibly venomous snake that was content to ignore me, I'd probably do likewise and leave it the hell alone.
Those snakes are on the top ten list of the most dangerous in the world. Even with anti-venom a lot of people die. My guess is you were not real close to a hospital. If it had bitten you, your return flight to the US would have been in the cargo hold of the plane, in a box. You were incredibly foolish, and .lucky.
yeah it is good that you looked coz these snakes are as poisounous as they are bautiful... and moreover they can twist the head extremely fast as you saw^^
The thing that gets me most about that snake is that it causes necrosis. The bite area just rots away... I can't think of a much more traumatic way to see your body go than that - just watch it blacken and fall apart like old fruit.
wow, you're not so smart...fer de lances cause the most deaths in costa rica out of any snake and you are poking at it...it even gave you a chance and tried to get away at first...
Some people actually know what they are doing. This guy doesn't, because he wasn't sure if it was venomous. If he wants to play around, let him. If he goes down, he had fun doing it. The technique for catching a fer-de-lance is about the same as catching a rattlesnake. You just put a stick on it's head and then hold it right behind the head. It's not that hard if you have some experience catching snakes. However, the venom of a fer-de-lance is definately more toxic than any rattlesnake.
WTF is wrong with you??? Youre in the jungle, all bye yourself, and poking one of the worlds deadliest snakes with a 2 foot long stick? Are you crazy?
I assume you live somewhere that they inhabit. Just curiosity how aggressive are they as compared to the other venomous snakes in your region? The only reason i ask is because on a documentary i watched earlier today on The History Channel, the archaeologists working in Guatemala made a point of mentioning that the Fer-de-lance were the biggest problem they've had with snakes on any site they've ever worked.
@VinceVega1994 In Belize the local farmers kill them on site.. They are known to be extremely aggressive ! They say not to walk around @ nite with a flashlight because they are attracted to it.. or a fire too... They stay indoors after dark in the country.. 4 real !
I heard those guys were really aggressive and super deadly. If you got bit out there in the jungle I hear you only have 30 minutes to get to a hospital or to some anti-venom - otherwise adios. I would never mess with a Fer de Lance..
@fi7thy The snake is, in fact, not poisonous! It's venomous. Venom is injected, like through the fangs of a snake. Poison is ingested, like an animal getting sick after eating a Poison Dart Frog and the poison that its glands produce.
Snakes are one of the few things I am knowlagable of.
The Fer-de-lance aka Terceopelo is an amazing beautiful snake, but it is deadly. I spend much of my time in central america growing up, especially in Costa rica in the area around Puerto quepos and Manuel Antonio. I have come in contact with Terceopelos. As i said they are beautiful and sometimes aggressive. The venom of one bite eats you inside out turning your body part to a mush. amputation likely. mmmm hemotoxin.
That snake was just trying to get away and the dude kept jagging it. Also, when it was coiled up he was getting way too close. They have a huge striking distance. He was lucky, very lucky. God protects the stupid.
Really stupid- I live in Costa Rica, spend a lot of time outdoors and like other guides/biologists have a huge amount of respect/fear for Fer-de lances because a bite from them is very dangerous and absolutely horrific. They are pretty common.
Bushmasters pretty rare and mostly in the forested foothills.
It is one thing to touch a snake with a stick, but this guy was asking to get bit. My previous boss is a marine biologist and she lived in C America for a yr and a half, she said they (fer de lances) will chase you.
The snake was trying to get away but you kept fucking with it so that's why it snaped at you. Man your retarted I think you must have a death wish. That snake will own your ass if you get bit.
The bushmaster is very long...8-12 feet..this is not that long..also has the black stripe behind the eye= Fer de Lance = stay away
Fer de Lance is bad, nasty and dangerous...bad tempered...these guys are IDIOTS and asking for it...This critter is more dangerous than the Western Diamondback..
Only if that snake is a Bushmaster. And I doubt that very much, my (very very very very) limited knowledge of the Bushmaster says that it lives pretty far out in the jungle. I don't think 2 miles is far enough to encounter one of them. Then again I'm no herpetologist.
I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I'm the idiot that took this video. I've loved and owned pet snakes most of my life but did not know how dangerous this one was when I tried to pick him up.
To make matters worse, I was alone on a hike, two miles into the jungle with no snake bite kit. Snake venom travels through the bloodstream. The faster you run, the faster your blood pumps and the faster you die. I was about three inches away from death. Dumb, I know but makes for a good story now.
lol you did exactly what we usually warn to the tourists not to do ("we" cuz i'm a guide and from CR :p), that snake's venom start making wounds for life in less than 1 hr and in 3 hrs about your dead already, you were really lucky she didn't try to go after you like some does, btw: the "tourniquet" the "sucking out the venom" and the "cut the piece of skin" are techniques that only works in a stupid movie as "Snakes on a Plane" since they don't help at all, actually they do the oppositte ;)
I was at a church in Panama when suddenly a group of kids started shouting, so I went over to see what was going on. They had found one of these by the front door and they were poking it with a stick, agitating it. The adults said that it can kill you, but I don't know anything about that. I saw a few of them when I was there, but I always stayed far enough away to be out of danger. There's no reason to test fate. That guy almost won the Darwin Awards.
